Agreed they do have good articles and decent journalism even if I don't agree with their politics a lot. Its still far better as a source for news on China than any western media.

Theres no political will to implement any change that will materially benefit Indigenous people. Liberal politics at its core, this proposal was almost entirely symbolic. Now arguably that is still important, which is part of the reason I still voted yes. But I don't think this is necessarily such a great loss for progressive politics. As time has gone on I have much more sympathy for progressive No arguments of Lidia Thorpe and co. You can believe that we have this result because 70% of the Australian electorate are racist deplorables beyond salvation but I think that's not a useful learning from this outcome and it doesn't help progressive politics at all going forward to operate with that assumption.

Given very similar advisory bodies have existed before, do you think the voice would have been successful in improving material conditions for Aboriginal people? For what its worth I voted yes. I was just cynical about the proposed change actually amounting to anything.

In the wake of the delivery of a resounding no to this proposed constitutional change, this article offers a very measured analysis of the problems with the Voice proposal and rejects the simplistic idea that a "no" is simply due to Australians being racist. This article is from before the referendum.

The whole situation is the result of Israel's land theft, apartheid, suffocating blockade on Palestinians in the first place.

Obviously I understand the extreme depravation and exploitation which Haiti has been subjected to for more than a century to give rise to this situation.

I haven't followed this story and I have not much idea of the situation. Obviously I'm suspect of US motivations for troop deployment. How should this situation be addressed ideally?

Something I'm aware of but try not to think about

Yes it is. You're just conditioned to think politics is this inconsequential mental game that has no impact on people's lives.

Has anyone noticed a shift in tone on Ukraine war reporting? I wonder if the West is looking to prime people for a way out. All of a sudden we might find it IS a humanitarian crisis after all.

Not sure if this is the best community to post. Most BRICS countries massively increasing healthcare spending. Of course increased spending doesn't necessarily equate to better outcomes as the US shows with highest global healthcare spending per capita but worse health outcomes compared to similar economies. China plans to massively improve their universal health coverage so I really hope increases in spending equate to increasing health access. Currently many health services are still privately operated in China and operate on a profit incentive unfortunately, meaning there is still some out of pocket costs for many treatments. I really hope to see full comprehensive and affordable UHC implemented in China.

Do you support the US ceasing diplomatic relations with PRC in favour of ROC and going back to the time before Nixon made rapprochement?

I thought this was a portrait of Adolf Hitler with a pride flag background at first glance 😂

Turns out that running a health system into the dirt actually kills people.
