The write-up they link is also insightful. Notably, they "explicitly reject these accusations" of being Zionists and insist it's a legal precaution required by their countries.

I've bought servers for hosting some small communities and I sometimes thought maybe I was paranoid for retaining anonymity and carefully picking the country and company to allow muh freedoms as far as speech goes, but it's interesting seeing .world and feddit pull out the "just following legislation" card (which is understandable, given that staff imprisonment is obviously bad for their community, but also irresponsible and complicit to simply accept the situation instead of resolving it, and because this is an internet community there are safe ways to resolve it).

This pic reminds me of a ten-year-old post:

Used to take prework out as a teenager. About a year ago I'd be taking 2 scoops of the strongest shit I could get my hands on. I'd have to spend almost 10 minutes between sets sometimes to keep from puking. Then one day I just thought, what the fuck am I doing. I started lifting to get healthier. And here I am taking in God knows what from a container with a psycho clown that's chewed half his own face off. What the fuck happened. I started with a half a scoop of c4 and now here I am. Who the fuck is this for, am I supposed to be that methhead clown, is that supposed to be appealing? Since then completely gave up prework outs and never looked back

The Trump administration continues to claim he violated an executive order prohibiting anti-Semitism

I know the answer is no, and to be clear the answer is no, but does that mean you can finally get rid of the literal neo-Nazi movements now?

The dems are one of the only groups in the US who (legally) had the power to:

  • reduce voter suppression
  • fix the electoral system in general (e.g. remove the broken FPTP system)
  • stop sabotaging popular candidates
  • not choose a senile dementia-sufferer to remain the country's leader for years
  • support the worker class instead of the owning class and get their votes (too many things to list)
  • support US citizens instead of imperial interests in countries half the population can't plot on a map

For most of these things, they should have been doing this long, long ago, before even Obama's terms. The Democrat Party clearly had the power of the state for more than enough time to make them look like an alternative rather than a complicit ally of the Republican Party. Why should they not be seen as at fault?

It's only real competitors, in my eyes, are Firefox forks.

Films and TV shows and more often have subtitles, which are helpful for enjoying muted video, translation, people with hearing impairment, people struggling to understand accents, checking fast unclear dialogue and other reasons. They are important, and sometimes it's clear when they do something right or wrong.

Maybe we can't expect them all to be works of art, but there are certainly some easy wins even in the industrial media environment. What do you think?

The English-speaking web has many different types of websites. For social media, there are link aggregators (Lemmy/Mbin/etc., reddit), microblog sites (Mastodon/Pleroma/etc., Xitter), forums like BBS boards, and more.

This post talks about Misskey and how it diverges from Western-made Fediverse culture. This reminded me of some other Japanese-style websites, such as textboards, chan imageboards and booru sites (booru imageboards are essentially a tag-based media archive, which similarly to chan boards have entered into the English-speaking internet but remain niche, mostly centered on art communities such as anime and furry fandoms).

What other styles of websites exist beyond the English-speaking internet? Does their design reflect a different culture? Are they better in some ways?

Maybe it's just a reddit/Threadiverse thing, maybe it's stronger in political communities, but I constantly see sarcasm everywhere online, far more than anywhere else. Scroll down and you'll even see it here.

Funnily enough, in a vacuum, one might expect online forums to avoid it more, since written text can mask tone and make sarcasm unintentionally ambiguous, to the point where it's common to see people adding tags to clarify. It's not rare to see arguments started when people don't recognise non-literal language.

Is it merely a habit being repeated? Is it a widespread coping mechanism for frustration? Is it simply the lowest form of wit, a simple and popular way to make fun? Is it an effective way to normalise unpopular views with the plausible deniability of just making jokes?

I wouldn't call the game 'extremely high difficulty', it even has some easier levels early on (at least when I played it a couple of years ago). I'm not a regular tower-defense or sim game player and I was able to complete Serpulo. It can be a challenging puzzle at times, but it's not a game I'd feel a need to warn people about difficulty-wise.

Disclaimer: this game may be addictive for some individuals.

Seconding (although I have a tendency to marathon the campaign of any game I think is excellent). No need for predatory tricks like loots, this is just a damn fun game.

It’s very weird for a FOSS enthusiast not to advertise one of the best open-source games of all time so here I am trying to make it spoken about again.

IIRC I found it in a 'top 100 FOSS games' list because it was one of the first which wasn't an open-sourced cloning of an existing game. No disrespect for clones and adaptations at all, but it's extra special to see original softwares so good that even people who don't care about FOSSness would use them.

On this note, another thing I appreciate is what they said about "Free" and "Libre": those names are great for saying "This is a free/libre/open clone of [x]", and that's what I'll think when I see it. Software like LibreOffice aims to support Microsoft Office documents, OpenRTC2 and OpenTTD are for people who want to see those games pretty-faithfully cloned, even if extended. Luanti is not OpenMinecraft.

Every place has its different environment, whether it be the level of organisation, reputation of socialism, dominant values of society, history and experiences, conflicts and crises. Because of these dynamics, I'd expect to see stark differences in what the movement looks like around the world. An obvious example familiar to most here is seeing the widespread and militant union mobilisations in France's retirement age protests.

Which countries do you have experience in, and how are their labour movements different?

The title is intentionally vague by saying 'labour movement', so you're welcome to talk about workplace attitudes, unions, socialist organisations, legislation and more.

As someone else said, the secret is that the US isn't 'turning into', it's been bad for at least a century. We've finally gotten to the point where racism is starting to get unpopular enough that it's not just normal and largely ignored.

[-] comfy@lemmy.ml 52 points 11 months ago

As an aside, I've always found it hilarious when a Faux News host says 'the media', as if they're not one of the biggest media outlets in the world. It's an amazing disassociation and it seems to land somehow. The television screen tells you "the media doesn't want you to know the truth!", o fanged poet.

The organization is full of full blown vile Marxists who to “abolish capitalism” and establish socialism

Well, yeah, they're socialists. Why shouldn't they want to abolish capitalism and establish socialism? There's nothing vile about that.

They outright want the destruction of Israel.

The dissolution of the state of Israel. Their worldview understands it as a settler-colonial ethnostate, just like former apartheid South Africa was. Jews, Christians, Muslims and others co-existed in Palestine before the Zionist state of Israel was established, the two-state situation is segregation caused by the establishment of a Zionist regime.

They organized a tone deaf pro-Palestinian rally on Oct 8th right after the attacks when the world was still in shock

That is a perfectly-appropriate time to rally support. They are pro-Palestinian and wanted to make it clear that people believed the resistance was supported, regardless of whether they are critical of the methods. The mass media gets to have its voice immediately, so rallies should not wait either.

They condemn social democracy

Yes. Democratic socialists are not capitalists and would not consider liberal democracy (especially the US version!) a working form of democracy, and don't consider social capitalist parties within it to be effective because they must work within a broken system. Social democracy is a false hope to them.

And their interests are not with the US succeeding, they are nothing more than assets of our foreign adversaries.

Most socialists will understand the US as a settler-colonial imperialist state from day 1, so yes, their interests are ultimately that the US (as we know it) should stop being imperial terrorists that most of the world (including state allies) hate. But to call that being "nothing more than assets of our foreign adversaries" is ignorant of the very real and growing discontent with the US's own borders. A lot of US citizens hate the US governments and how they work, and to blame that on foreign adversaries will ultimately prevent them from being solved and prevent their numbers growing.
