It's another reddit alternative.
It is a thing on a lot of Lemmy communities, but most of the posts end up with no comments which makes them not that interesting. For certain niche communities, Lemmy just doesn't have the user base yet.
What about Signal's UI isn't up to par aesthetically?

YouTube comments have been taking a nose dive since the Google+ integration.
Yeah it's not so much about cost in my eyes. The conferences I publish at are in the $500-$1000 range to attend once your paper gets accepted, not cheap but not too crazy, and grants take care of that cost anyways.
I was saying it'd be more of a curtousy for you to get permission before distributing.
