About 3 or 4 years ago PayPal added the option to buy cryptocurrency, which I thought I’d try. (Dumb idea 🙄)

Part of the sign up process was glitched. I retried and clicked submit one too many times, I guess. Now I’ve been unable to use PayPal for years. They blocked me because THEIR SITE was broken, but the web page essentially accuses me of being a criminal and asks for my bank records. No way in hell.

This was just for me to pay others. I can only imagine how awful PayPal is if you are a vendor.

Fuck PayPal.

“Failed to mark post as read” errors

I see this error almost every time I open the comments on a post.

My server is lemm.ee. Does it not support the “mark as read” feature?

The Fisker Ocean has solar panels on its roof. It can add 4 or 5 miles a day if fully exposed to the sun.

Not enough to matter. It’s a gimmick.

If you don’t have an EV, you may think that EV owners are worried about range, and they’d welcome any increase. I have not found this to be true.

It’s more like having a car that starts every day with a full tank. You’re never going to burn through that in a single day. Pretty soon you don’t care about range, efficiency, or pay much attention to the battery meter. It only matters if you’re on a road trip, which for me is a couple times a year.

I would not want to give up a nice full-roof sunroof for a few extra miles a day.

This is an old article. It references the Batygin and Brown paper from 2016. As of 2024, it is still considered possible, but no direct evidence has been observed, and alternative explanations have been proposed, according to Wikipedia.

It’s an old federated message board system. Message boards are called “newsgroups “. It predates the web so it’s usually accessed via a special client app. To use it you’d need:

  • A Usenet client app, called a newsreader. See Wikipedia. Many are probably abandoned by now.
  • An account with a Usenet provider. A search engine will point you to several options. There used to be some free ones. If there still are, it would be a good way to try it out. But note that the free ones often don’t carry all of the newsgroups — they omit the binary groups, which are known to carry pirated software and, let’s say, diverse video content.

Who would’ve thought? This isn’t going to fly with the EU.

Article 5.3 of the Digital Markets Act (DMA): “The gatekeeper shall not prevent business users from offering the same products or services to end users through third-party online intermediation services or through their own direct online sales channel at prices or conditions that are different from those offered through the online intermediation services of the gatekeeper.”

Apple has an annual legal budget of approximately infinity dollars. I assure you they are aware of this and they believe they are in compliance, even if just barely.

If challenged, they will have no problem fighting it — they have nearly as much cash on hand as the entire EU budget.

I hope the EU challenges this, and I hope the EU wins, but Apple isn’t going to be surprised by whatever happens.

Comedian Lewis Black has a routine about “a Starbucks across the street from a Starbucks”. Apple Stores aren’t nearly as common.

Unless you’re in Glendale, California -- where Apple Glendale Galleria is across the street from Apple The Americana at Brand.

Are there any other Apple Stores this close together?

The stores are less than 150 meters apart, but unfortunately they aren’t within sight of each other. As you exit Apple The Americana at Brand, you won’t see the other Apple Store — only a notably uncrowded Samsung Experience Store.

New EV owner here. We charge at home so I don’t need to use them, but stores nearby have chargers. I tried them to see how they work. They are often broken.

One store has a Volta charger (free!). It worked great the first time; the next time I went it was broken.

Walmart has an Electrify America fast charger. The first time I went, 1 of 3 was not working. The next time I went, 1 of 3 was not working, but it was a different one.

Was I unlucky, or are these charging networks unreliable? Has it been getting better or worse over time?

Supposedly most Gen Z now use subtitles and I don’t blame them. With the way movie sound is mixed it’s really hard to hear the dialog. Not everyone has a Dolby-certified sound system in their living room.

Even with a basic surround system that has a separate center channel (and fiddling with the settings for 5.1, Atmos, stereo) we still often have to use subtitles. It’s major failure on the part of movie studio audio engineers.

Matchbooks used to have ads for sketchy (sorry) art schools on them. This implies that Leonardo never considered art until he happened to notice one of these ads.

Edit: Found the relevant Wikipedia article.

NASA does this. Looking at the metadata from last year’s moon orbiter photos (like this one), it was shot on a GoPro HERO4 Black. Here NASA scientists talk about the cameras on that mission.
