I agree, mostly, young people start with tiktok (or whatever the platform du jour is) and the algo pushes Andrew Tate at them. Xitter is now a cesspit of hate. There are FB Groups and Insta accounts monetising 'news' and YT accounts pushing hate as 'news'.

Simplistic populism is easy to digest and easy to understand. No matter how ludicrous it is, the idea that the root of your problems is muslims/the dems/women/trans folks/the gays/whatever is simple, easy to understand and easy to communicate. Its made for algorithm driven content.

I don't want to be that old cunt at the back of the room harping on about the good old days but we live in an age when truth is irrelevant and easy to understand but utterly wrong information gets spread far and wide. Facts are usually complex, nuanced and not easy to present in a soundbite type way and nobody listens to explanations that last more than 5mins.

People of my generation invented this info hellscape and are profiting from it. The young are the ones paying the price.

Being old does the trick for me.

Are you suggesting that someones potential for child rape is the only metric we should look at when determining someones decency?

I'll recommend (as I always do, being a satisfied customer) Filen - scroll down that page and you'll see the 10gb free tier.

All you need is a working email - get an anonymous forwarder here or here. All the apps are open source, everything is E2EE, the website doesn't track or fingerprint you and if you decide to upgrade to a paid acct, they accept Monero.

If anyone seriously judged me for not being on a particular website I'd have to consider their competency at managing life.

This should be compulsory reading for all instance admins.

As well as those others have already mentioned, I use:

Linguist is a translation extension that respects your privacy. If you switch to the Bergamot translator it acts in offline mode.

Redirector which allows you to set custom rules so you can redirect (for example) Twitter to Nitter, Instagram to PikUki and also rules to redirect pages that are behind paywalls via 12ft.io (or 1ft.io as 12ft is currently down) .

TamperMonkey a userscript manager. I don't have loads of userscripts but I do have things like SocialFixer for making FB a bit better, Absolute Enable Right Click and Bandcamp Volume Bar.

Big tech companies aren't bothered that it happens, they're bothered they're not personally profiting from it.

The current state of the legislation is this: the gvmt started out by saying "you must do this", then when it finally sunk in that it wasn't technically possible right now, they then said "OK, we get its not possible right now. As soon as it is, you must do this."

Some people have said 'no problem, its never going to be possible to break encryption'. This is not accurate. When quantum processing becomes a reality, which is realistically not too far away now, encryption will be trivial to crack. That's the point the rest of the world need to worry because you're right, every other gvmt in the world will follow the UK's lead.

I didn't claim Lemmy was or wasn't dying. I said that you unsubbing wasn't going to kill Lemmy.

I really doubt Lemmy is dying though. In much the same way Mastodon isn't dead merely because the Twitter exodus stopped. It'll come and go in waves, just like Mastodon I expect. Or maybe it'll go back to pre-Reddit numbers, when it still wasn't dead.
