I think those of us who care enough about privacy issues to even be aware that Brave exists are well aware that out of the box FFox is a starting point, not an end point. FFox vs Chrome is a valid basis for comparison in a way that this simply isn't. Comparing Brave with LibreWolf or Mullvad is a more valid comparison.
Right. My instance maintainer accepts donations via Ko-fi, which isn't even listed here.
You've got to understand the 'average' British psyche at this point in history. The majority simply don't care that people they see as troublemakers and/or scroungers are having their rights dismantled. They lack the empathy to give a shit for these people and they lack the foresight to see that it'll be their rights gone one day too. What stirs the average british gammon off their collective arses these days is the rumour there might be an immigrant in a hotel somewhere or that a drag queen exists.
To me, it's an issue of personal responsibility.
Lemmy is, like a lot of Fediverse platforms, about as private as it can be. There's no trackers, you're not forced to use real names or any other identifying information, no adverts follow you from site to site, no browser fingerprinting and no instance owners are trying to sell your data.
Beyond that, what you choose to say on Lemmy is your responsibility and yours alone.
It's truly amazing how many ways right wingers will find to be shitty to people.
Hades. Hardly ever leaves the Underworld, thus cutting down on the risk of me having to be his champion.
Well, Mastodon has been around since 2016 IIRC which is nearly 8 years and it's still growing and expanding. There's no reason to suppose Lemmy will be any different.
A large part of the issue of sustainability is intent. Meta, Twitter, Microsoft, Google etc are profit driven. By that standard, no fediverse software is sustainable because for-profits only care about continual growth leading to continual profit.
Lemmy is open source. No one who develops it or hosts an instance really cares about it being financially profitable so there's not that motivation. The motivation is more akin to doing something positive for people and at the same time, indulge in a hobby/interest they have. If the people who benefit from it (you and me, the users) recognise that benefit I would hope they donate to its development and the instance they're on. This in turn enables the users who can't afford to donate to still be able to participate in a system where profit is not King.
So sustainability in the fediverse really means 'can I afford to keep doing something I enjoy doing?' As long as they can, it's sustainable.
Thanks to everyone who suggested something. I've settled on a bottle of Angel's Envy.
This is just my opinion but, given terrorist organisations are militarily usually much poorer/smaller/weaker than the group they stand against, they need help from outside.
One way to possibly achieve that is to do something awful to provoke your opposition into a retaliation so indiscriminate and horrifying that your ideological (if not literal) allies in the surrounding area step in to attack your enemy.
A user on there posted CSAM. Given that images federate too and that moderation over there seems to be lacking, do you not think it's unrealistic not to expect defederation?
- It's not right leaning
- You unsubbing is not going to kill Lemmy
I grew up where the canal holiday industry was a big employer. Quite a lot of the staff used to work on towed barges in their young day. Legging is definitely how they got through tunnels. Barge poles are used to fend off after being moored up or to prevent collisions in narrow stretches. Once the barge was out the tunnel they'd throw a line to someone on the towpath and hitch back on to the horses.
