Thank the lordt

ACLU cheers house vote blocking 9495

WASHINGTON — The House of Representatives blocked H.R. 9495, the Stop Terror-Financing and Tax Penalties on American Hostages Act, 256-145. Because the House of Representatives was attempting to move the bill on suspension it required a two-thirds majority in order to pass. This legislation would have granted the Secretary of Treasury the unilateral power to investigate and effectively shut down any tax-exempt organization — including news outlets, universities, and civil society groups — by stripping them of their tax-exempt status based on an unilateral accusation of wrongdoing.

I read an article yesterday, may have been from CBS News or something??? It took FOURTEEN PARAGRAPHS before ANYTHING at all was mentioned about the "death to arab" chants and burning of Palestinian flags. Before and after that paragraph it was all talking about jews being chased down in the streets, it's horrifying that people would do this, in ashamed of our country, it was a pogrom....then just casually dropping the real reason it happened. I couldn't believe they even included that info at all

In the article it says that it was introduced by a Republican but co-sponsored by two Dems so I imagine that speaks to this question no?

I have pretty much given up on being social at all any more because of how much I seem to resist it, even though I WANT to go out and do things and make more friends and be consistent. But it's just so exhausting, I dissociate when I'm out and about unless I'm drunk, I get super anxious about what to talk about, etc etc. I've been going to punk and metal shows for like 20+ years but now I pretty much have resigned myself to the fact that I just am not gonna go anymore because I just disappoint myself again and again after I tell myself I wanna go, but then when it comes down to it I figure out a way to just avoid it. And that makes me sad.

I'm AuDHD, and currently exploring meds. Has anyone noticed an impoved ability to socialize/go out in public when medicated?

Would like to spend under or around 1k.

My refurbished laptop that I got from work crapped out and I need a new one. I'd like to do light gaming, like Cult of Lamb or Disco Elysium and that would probably be the most heavy use application that I need it for. I'm also a caveman and can be pretty rough on my things, I think my last laptop ate it because I dropped it like 3 feet to the ground by knocking it off my couch on accident. So something that's somewhat durable, but I do not plan on throwing it across the room lol.

I plan on learning how to use Linux; I know next to nothing about it but have just heard good things and I think I'm just computer savvy enough to figure it out. Also any suggestions on solid alternatives to things like Word, Google docs, etc would me super appreciated!

I found this article about Milei yesterday to learn a bit about him and it's absolute unhinged. I read this part and I lost my shit, cackling at work:

But he quit football at 18 to study economics, going on to lecture at university, then working as an economist at various financial institutions.

In his free time he sang in a band, Everest, which played Rolling Stones songs — and he looked the part. Advertisement

Milei claims he hasn’t combed his hair since he was 13, adding: "From that moment on, the invisible hand combs my hair.”

"We are focused on producing all types of weapons and ammunition, and we show that we can test it on the battlefield and make it better during the war,” Kamyshin said. “That’s something we can contribute to the free world, because as you see, defense industry is becoming more and more important globally.”

I hate the framing of Hamas as terrorists, if they are considered terrorists, The IOF should be too.

I was reading the 1988 charter and there are parts of it that are sketchy and contain anti semitic stuff, like saying that Jews control the world and media and that they use groups like the Freemasons to push the Zionist agenda. I think there is one quote about killing jews. But in the same charter they talk about aoming for Muslims, Christians and Jews to live peacefully together as they had after the Islamic conquest in the 7th century. And I recognize that the formation of Hamas is a reaction to colonization, displacement, murder and torture. Also I know they did re-write the charter in 2017 to explicitly state that they are militantly against the Zionist occupation and not Jews. It's interesting and evokes a lot of different conflicting feelings for me, I just would be super curious to see an interview with someone who has been part of Hamas for decades speak on this

Edit: I'm working on a very brief history of Palestine and I'm finally working on 1988-1995 so there is probably a lot of context I'm missing at this point in the history too and am really curious to keep moving forward and learn about it.

Started researching origins of Israel/Palestine beginning in the Bronze Ages til present to dunk on everyone with their shitty takes. I am and never have been a big history person, but I've more or less gone through the Bronze Ages - 1940's and figured out surrounding context for myself, just need to flesh out my notes. I'd love suggestions on what to study that could be important to getting an advanced grasp on the relations over the years, from any time period. Plsthx

Yep, officer Davis was my SRO back in the early 2000's. He was known for harassing kids at school AND purposefully being the cop to bust kids after hours for smoking weed and such. He fucking hated teenagers

Another article about a town in Kansas that bought their own grocery store. It seems to have had success and motivated town residents to open up other stores and create programs. It sounds like it is also funded as a utility, so a monthly bill charged to the residents and they can shop for what the need.

Rural Kansas and Chicago embracing juche? We will see

Not old enough to fit in with the oldheads, not young enough to fit in with the zoomers. This is my burden to bear

Hope I don't get banned for this, but like can someone explain to me exactly why this shit is funny and there's no nuance around it? Like, you can mourn the Muslim lives lost due to American Imperialism AND mourn the lives of the people who had fuck all to do with any of that? Like the janitors in the building for example? Like I get it fuck the state but for it to be something people post about and laugh at all day long is hard for me to grock. What if it was your family that died?

I'm not trying to argue anything or get in a struggle session around it but like, I'm just surprised that I haven't really seen any kind of pushback or critique around making that big of a joke of this.

It is so cute it hurts and the soundtrack is super cool. What are some other games you'd suggest for Cult of the Lamb lovers?

I just got a refurbished old hp laptop for free and I can do some gaming on Steam but uh, it's not a gaming laptop per se. I also have a switch. Hit me!

Nimby's will complain about needles and feces on sidewalks, but when you suggest giving someone a studio where they could use drugs and shit outside of the public eye. They say "Not on my dime!"

My brother in Christ, your dime is paying to move what you are complaining about to the other side of the block!! Nothing is going away, nothing is getting solved! It makes me want to pull my hair out so much.

Obviously homelessness is much more complex than how I described it above but sometimes I try to think of ways to explain shit that will appeal to libs/assholes (as I did above) but even then they just....don't care.

Recently, a houseless woman's belongings were trashed during sweeps. With them were her daughters' ashes.

cw stats on abuse

I saw someone on reddit say about homeless people without social supports: "if you have absolutely no friends or family that's a YOU problem". How can. People be so fucking dense?

50+ percent of homeless people have been part of the foster care system

20 percent of foster youth who age out transition directly to homelessness

38 percent of homeless youth under the age of 18 experienced sexual abuse that contributed to their homelessness

90+ percent of homeless women have been sexually abused in their lifetimes

It's been proven that early childhood trauma impacts the likelihood of schizophrenia in adults

Yet when you shove all of the facts in their face, it's just another goalpost to move. Ugh

I haven't owned a functioning laptop in like, ten years because my phone does most of what I like, but I (probably) have tendinitis and carpal tunnel and need something more ergonomic for my terminally online needs. Arguing with strangers on the internet is not as effective on a cell phone lol.

I'm mostly streaming media, researching online and screwing around on lemmy. I'm interested in toying around with linux just to try it as an OS but would probably want to keep windows because Im not super tech savvy as people here seem to be. That said I can figure things out pretty quickly if I put my mind to it. I would like the ability to game if I wanted, but that might mean a whole different beast so if I could even run at least SNES roms or something like that that would be cool. I'd also like a decent sized screen, 16 inches at least. Hoping not to spend more than 1k if possible but I'm old and don't know what the average price is really for something that's upper-middle quality so whatever clever.

Thanks for any recommendations!
