yt-dlp or embedded youtube links say "Sign in to confirm you’re not a bot" but for me the whole plan of this operation is that i don't have to do that.

that's pretty bad

(edit: it works again, i changed nothing just waited)

I am looking for a privacy respecting (and ideally E2EE supporting) email/ calendar/ contacts provider.

I had previously used ProtonMail up until a few months ago when the CEO started getting political (bummer).

I've since been using TutaMail, and while it's a bit rough on the UI/UX, I do appreciate that the team behind it seems very privacy focused. One problem here though, is that family that is also using this is ending up in spam folders when emailing others (I guess Tuta is more likely to be flagged as spam).

Does anyone have any suggestions for alternate providers?

Hi there fediverse people!

I'm starting a non-profit to help people get away from big tech and use alternatives. Besides providing info via a website we'll put on events, and we're also planning to start a certification service so companies can prove they don't support the surveillance business model.

Does anyone know of any grant funding, either UK or EU, that might help with this?

how to leak to a journalist (www.niemanlab.org)
submitted 1 month ago by 0x0@lemmy.zip to c/privacy@lemmy.ml

TL;DR

— Personal devices only
— Don’t leak from work, on a work device, or from work Wi-Fi
— Use Signal and Signal’s camera
— The reporter should recreate any image you leak before displaying it to the public

Hey everyone!

So, I've made some small progress in switching things up on my Android:

Replaced Gmail app with Thunderbird
Replaced Google Calendar with FOSSify Calendar
Replaced Google Play Store with Aurora & F-Droid
Replaced Android file manager with FOSSify File Manager
Replaced Android keyboard with Heliboard

But now I’m hitting a wall trying to find ones on root of problem:
free replacement for Gmail
free Google Calendar alternative that works well
on both Android and via Thunderbird Windows

Self-hosting isn’t really an option for me, so I’d love to hear your suggestions!

If you’ve found something you really like, please share your experiences.

Thanks!

So I’ll be traveling in such a way that I’ll be crossing the US border. I want to take a burner phone so I can wipe it, or have innocuous enough data. The problem: all my passwords are stored in a password manager that uses 2FA tied to my primary phone which will be sitting at home (along with other sites that use 2FA tied to authenticators on my phone).

So remembering passwords is out. And not having access to 2FA presents a catch-22. So what’s the best way to approach that?

I'm a former journalist, and created a free resource called DISENGAGE: Opting Out—and Finding New Options—to Reclaim Your Life from Spammers, Scammers, Intrusive Marketers and Big Tech.

It's available in PDF and full text on the website, plus EPUB at Barnes & Noble, Kobo, Smashwords, and other retailers.

It costs $0. No email needed, no tracking, no affiliate links. It was a passion project and I'm just trying to get the word out.

(If you know anyone in the press who may want a hardcopy, i printed up a couple dozen in print format on my own dime...just let me know!)

Enjoy!

I'm currently using Beeper to conglomerate the plethora of chat services that my friends and family use: WhatsApp, FB Messenger, RCS/SMS, and Discord. I use Signal separately because I read that Beeper needs to decrypt incoming messages before reencrypting and routing, so I felt adding a bridge for Signal defeated the purpose of using Signal.

I've also read that Beeper is essentially just Matrix with a bunch of bridges, so I looked into self-hosting Matrix and standing up those bridges myself. I would feel comfortable integrating Signal into a self-hosted instance where I control and can encrypt the middleware.

What would you all recommend as a viable, self-hosted alternative to replace Beeper? I've been trying to set up Matrix but running into a lot of headache with no simple way to self-host it. Yes, I've tried the Ansible set up and I get countless issues. I've heard an XMPP server might be a better solution as it is more lightweight and battle-tested? How do XMPP gateways compare to Matrix bridges, and would they cover all my needs?

Forgive me if it’s been discussed. After searching various ways I was unable to find any discussion of this.

Just noticed the iOS orange light in the Dynamic Island was lit on my iPhone. Looking at Control Center to see which app was using it and it says “unknown.”

Anyone else heard about this happening?

In “Secrets and Lies” (2000), I wrote:

It is poor civic hygiene to install technologies that could someday facilitate a police state.

It’s something a bunch of us were saying at the time, in reference to the vast NSA’s surveillance capabilities.

So , I felt this was kind of interesting. I happened to get an Amazon echo for free that been in it's box for a year. Now I was renovating and had no dum radio /speakers / music available.

Ok lets try might be interesting at least.

Phone GOS no gapps , VPN .

Location EU country A. Both on VPN and irl.

Signup: Fake email , name address, detail and phone number.

Amazon echo extra permissions none, all privacy settings checked. Resettled ad id

Router , 4g teltonika using a sim card from EU country B.

Got it set up and set location to the next town over for local weather updates.

Set language to English / country A

Connected a new Spotify account also same setup fake number fake details.

Played some Spotify. Checked the weather all good.

Morning after l, moved it to a different outlet.

Spotify deactivated " service not available at your location" weather updates still have same town.

Ok lets check some radio , got it going.

Advertisement in country B language.

Curious how it's done. I did speak country B language a bit around it but seems weird to base it on that alone ( none recorded in that language according to history)

I haven't posted to that site in years so I'm out of the loop with how their anti-spam/shadowbanning works. There's a community I want to post in which basically only exists there and Discord.

(Worst case, I can visit a shop and use their WiFi, this isn't Top Secret or anything, but would be nice if I didn't have to.)

I'm discovering a new OS and I feel like I need to learn everything from scratch. I don't even know which ad block to use.

The first thing I did opening Safari was to search for Ublock Origin. But it is not available anymore since 2019 :-(

ProtectEU

Additionally, the Commission envisions expanding Europol's role, effectively transforming it into a European equivalent of the FBI, with enhanced operational capabilities.

Granting Europol the ability to access encrypted data can only mean one thing: Brussels is proposing some form of government-mandated backdoor for communication platforms protected by end-to-end encryption.
