...so the protagonist isn't a young college kid doing a geology project on his own out in the middle of nowhere possibly dying of a poisonous snake bite when the plague hits?That seems like an unecessary change.
the snake bite is still there; but yes, no college roomates and he lives out in the middle of nowhere in an upper middle class house to himself.
