I work in Seattle and live near it.
Our EC votes here in WA went for the Harris. I told everyone who would listen offline and online in this state and in other states why we shouldn't vote for Trump.
I am working or commuting to work 60 hours a week and we are losing our health insurance. I'm already scrambling. If I showed up in a city which 60%+ of the pop agrees with me and held a sign for a few hours it wouldn't change a goddamn thing except get some honks and nods for sympathetic folks who also feel this way.
More than the probably unactionable threat of invading Canada I'm worried about the following in no particular order of importance.
Not being able to get meds for my sick wife
Health care collapsing in America
Our economy collapsing
A trade war with our neighbors and allies you know folks like Canada
People going hungry here
People dying of hunger overseas without the aid we used to provide
Vaccination and public health collapsing followed by potentially worse threats than covid like a deadly flu pandemic if the bird flu adapts to us well enough to explode without adapting enough to avoid massive fatalities. Note there is no reason to believe this would leave other countries unscathed
Ukraine being ground under Putin's toes because they won't give it and allies like us abandon them with millions dying and tens of millions living under occupation
Almost 2M of which half are children in Gaza being murdered in the course of driving them from their homes
Trump allowing Putin's aggression to get way out of hand and then trying to play savior thus kick starting WW3
A nuclear apocalypse
Climate change being impossible to reverse because we are so far behind that it doesn't matter what we do if we decide to make changes 20 years from now instead of today. Also factors that seem to suggest this may get much worse much faster than earlier thought like the amount of CO2 sequestered dropping off or the Clathrate gun hypothesis
Mirror life being way to attractive to stupid people as bio weapons to stupid people despite a host of scientists coming out against even peaceful research in that direction
Taiwan going to war with China and chip production dealing a further blow to the economy since it will take literal years for us to replace Taiwan for complex chips
Not being able to vote Trump out of power in 2026 2028 because they don't let us
Trump rounding up millions of people into migrant camps but not being able to deport them very quickly leading to multi year detention of immigrants in hostile concentration camps that ultimately become death camps
Literally every issue here is more likely than us invading Canada. It's not that I don't care about Canada. It's not that I don't emphatically disagree with Canada's treatment. I just can't do a goddamn thing.
No one in Canada is asking to be your number one priority.
We just want you to get angry and do something about all of the problems being brought about the fascist dictator your country elected, instead of sitting around and wringing your hands about it.
If you guys can reign in Trump then Canada will be fine. But if you don't then we're all fucked, north and south of the border.
The difference is, you're the ones in a position to stop him. We're not.
This.
I'm not mad about USAmericans not standing up for Canada specifically.
I'm fucking mad at them for not standing up against literally anything else.
That they don't care to defend Canada is whatever, but they don't even care enough to defend themselves.
Forget about Canada, just stand up for your own fucking selves and we'll be fine.
It's unfortunately by design. The country is way too big for itself. The oligarchs want to keep everyone fighting for their own survival so they can't fight back. They are more scared of unity than Nazis. The government also has access to the world's largest military and is eager to sic them on their own civilians. Canadians and Americans are both equally afraid of our military, just look at our cops. Not to mention every time we go out we have to worry about getting randomly shot by a disgruntled 14 year old at Walmart.
There's a large underground resistance, but there's only so much we can do. The US is a failed nation
It needs to get larger and push harder.
Basically the only realistic thing an individual could do that would have any effect would absolutely be violence.
It's a lot easier when there's nothing to be done, isn't it? There's no responsibility anymore. No call to action. Despair is simple. It doesn't require you to do anything, it only requires that you feel bad.
What as a normal person is there to be done? I shall vote for local people who will resist Trump. I shall vote against Trump and if I'm not allowed to vote I'll fight.
Great question. Step one is educating yourself on how to answer this question yourself, but better ask this of you local groups, I’m not from Seattle so can’t help you figure this out. But the short answer is to organize.
Democracy doesn’t happen only on Election Day.
Any small resistance is resistance.
Stop supporting mega corps and billionaires by quitting x, Amazon, Facebook, insta, snap, Google, Netflix, Disney, Hulu, Microsoft, apple, phone, broadcasting companies, Hollywood studios completely. Stop feeding the machine. If we can you can too and quit the "but my business" or "but my friends list". It's easy to do nothing and make so many excuses.
Join a local organization that helps your fellow man. Learn about people who are different than you, support them, eat with them, talk to them. Get the fuck off your couch and from behind the screen.
Promote resistance marches/public strikes and take time off work even if it hurts you to protest openly and loudly. Resistance isn't cheap or easy. It's going to hurt you and your family personally and until it does you aren't doing shit.
Stop saying I can't, it's not possible, no one cares. It takes an individual to be outside the norm and start a movement. To stand up and put themselves on the line for what they believe. If you aren't willing to do this then you are one of them regardless of your words. Actions matter more than your blustery bullshit.
Support organizations that are rallying to fight or organize. Offer your skills and support no matter how maxi or mini they may be. Quit saying I can't and start doing.
Organize and join resistance orgs and pages online in places that lots of Americans gather. Be active in these groups. They will help you see what you can and can't do.
Join a union or strike with one. Walk the picket line. Meet resistance fighters in their own environment.
Encourage everyone you know to do these things as well. Drag your friend kicking and screaming. Enforce to them how important it is. They still won't go...go and make new friends. Encourage your old friends to join you. If they don't they don't deserve you.
Don't have friends...join a resistance movement. Common goals unite people and develop strong bonds.
And for fuck sakes stop asking the world what you should do and start doing it. There are suggestions, lists, organizations, online groups and so much more that can educate you on how to resist. Attacking individuals online because you are unwilling to educate yourself or resist even for your own benefit is pointless and just encourages us outside the US to lump you in with your administration. You will not get assistance or open dialog from anyone other than your echo chamber.
You cant name one godamn thing that matters and you are completely weaseling out
You didn’t ask “what matters”, but “what to do”. I can tell you the things I do, but they’re all groups in my city so unless you move here it doesn’t help much. But you can look for the equivalents where you live: strong towns, vision zero, proportional representation, antifascism, buying local, defense of the public library, volunteer with a local party… the list of options on how to get organized and on what specific areas is endless.
Pick any of the things you already told that matters to you and go work on it. Not even talking about Canada anymore, you’re the one using learned helplessness to weasel out of putting in the work. Go on about not having the time to act on these things, after telling us that you care about them so much.
As the article pointed out, your fellow countrymen were willing to exercise their 2nd amendment rights on beer because a trans person drank some. I'd argue this could be considered a slightly more consequential issue.
I'm not paying any money to fucks that bend over for Trump either. Buying and shooting the stuff I oppose is less effective than not buying it.
I find it hilarious that you and I are being downvoted for being angry and wanting to do something more than just sit back by people in the comments that are saying, "we wish you americans would do something."
Keep withholding your cash, fellow prole. We can only force our cowardly brethrens' noses into their own shit and hope they get angry too. The only way for this to be non-violent is to completely withdraw ourselves from the system in all aspects and en masse. Take away their real power.
Which might be what he wants. To declare a national emergency so he can send in the national guard on you guys.
The problem is, it will require violence and loss of life from the proletariat to make a change at this point. Even the ones that are complaining are not willing to stand up for themselves, let alone anyone else.
I'm fighting on a digital front with my networking and development skills in various ways, and with my wallet and choices in other ways. However, I am beyond ready and itching to get down and dirty with these motherfuckers and start throwing punches. Every one around me just cowers into a, "well, it's not really so bad yet, I just want to keep buying my [insert big company name product here]." They've lost the human ability to adapt and overcome. It's fucking sad and depressing. I've tried so hard to light a fire under my "left-wing" friends that seemingly share in my misery, and I am always met with excuses.
When I make it to the front lines, I fear I will be alone.
I am generally opposed to violence, but I don't know that I disagree with you. The thing is that violence doesn't offer any simple answers either. Modern surveillance and military technology make a traditional stand-up fight suicidal. Large organizations are highly vulnerable to information leaks and infiltration. Small, loosely connected groups and individuals are most likely to survive and be effective. It's going to be a lot more complicated than picking up a rifle and marching off to the front line.
What comes next will also depend on a lot of factors that are current unknowable. The courts are pushing back, but it isn't clear how effective that will be. Congress could change things, but is not likely to do so unless we can motivate them. And will the military support an openly illegal fascist government, avoid getting involved, or oppose it?
I think it's worth peacefully protesting in every way possible, especially economically, but that is going to require real sacrifices too. Many of us, including me, are used to a certain level of comfort and convenience in our lives. Dramatic gestures are sometimes easier than the daily hassle of not ordering from Amazon, not communicating via Facebook and Reddit, and recofiguring our phones and computers to avoid using Google services.
This is what really sucks ass for me. I said fuck convenience 10 years ago and I stripped my life of all of these kinds of things, with the exception of Reddit until the past couple years. These things are the NUMBER ONE thing we as the proletariat can do to kick the fat cysts in the balls, and no one is willing to even entertain it. IMO, it's the only way this can be non-violent and also super effective. We have to take away their real power.
Otherwise, agreed. We can't just take a rifle and run up to official buildings. My comment about being alone on the front lines was more so a metaphor, not intended to be literal. I meant that I am alone in the fight that I've been fighting for the past 10 years, which is giving up convenience, returning to my human roots of "adapt and overcome", and taking away power from the rich. However, no one wants to follow, and I am alone. I know there are others out there that have taken the same extreme measures I have, but they are few and far between. None of my closest friends or family are willing to give up Dunkin Donuts and WalMart, and I fucking hate it. Since no one is giving up this stuff, I feel like violence from the few that are willing is the only way to light a fire (see Luigi).
ETA: Congress won't do a damn thing, look at how much money Pelosi makes off insider trading. The military is 50/50 people that oppose and people that bootlick, so it's going to be all of the above I'm afraid.
I sympathize. I'm far behind you in deciding these things need to be done, but I have finally gotten there. I think we will have more company soon.
Not by yourself, no.
But thousands of people like you pushing in the same direction would be able to force change.
Just because he doing all that as well doesn’t mean he won’t get to it. Destroying things is easy work. Sometimes all it takes is not doing other things.
I wish I could just be a Canadian and worry about going to work and going to the doctor and normal risks and not whether I can even get care or if the country around me is going to collapse around me.
You have literally no idea how terrifying it is to be us right now.
My kid's daycare is right beside the military base in Kingston. This base is within artillery range of Fort Drum. There is a 100% chance she gets shelled during the opening salvo.
My wife and I have agreed upon a set of leading indicators to send my child to rural Cape Breton, and another set to send them to friends in Europe.
I will die at the border of this great nation, but my child's life is not mine to forfeit.
We won't invade Canada
Of course not.
But I've got plans in case you do. And I need to watch for early warning signs because my child will be shelled in the opening salvo.
Let's revisit this in exactly 4 years. I don't think there's anything that could make that statement sound reasonable between now and then.
