The video on the tweet says that they are 24 hours from reaching Gaza and that Israel has started to jam the ships communication signals. That they are expecting to be attacked or intercepted.

The "Israel Minister of Defense" Israel Katz instructed the Israel Forces to prevent the ship from reaching Gaza.

Madleen is the ship carrying Greta Thunberg.

It'd be the first time they kill someone the average Westerner has heard about

But it's still like... I'm imagining the news tomorrow morning, in the timeline where she's killed.

"GRETA THUNBERG DEAD" news organizations will post — but they'll beat around the bush as for how exactly she lost her life, maybe they'll even find a "copspeak" way of phrasing it so that it sounds like she was actually killed by Hamas instead of Zionists, if you aren't reading too carefully. Algorithms on key social media platforms will also — Completely Mysteriously — not give the story due attention. On Facebook I expect a lot of "care" reactions or people changing their profile pictures "in solidarity". Some Zionist or climate-change-denying boomers on social media will say she "had it coming", but most people will instead just say that it's "tragic" she died. Palestinian organizations will release statements acknowledging her martyrdom, many others will talk about how Greta Thunberg impacted their lives, and how the fame she gained as a teenage girl activist is inspiring. Politicians in the West will shame the Zionist Entity and threaten sanctions, if even that, but will back out of any actual sanctions at the last minute. And soon enough, Greta Thunberg's image will be flanderized and lib-washed, and she'll simply join the canon of people who boomers will share "motivational quotes" of on Facebook.

...But it won't actually amount to much. Maybe some more attendance at protests, or some more awareness, for a time — but most of the people who only care about issues once they start killing famous Westerners, already want Greta Thunberg to drop dead. The tiny minority who will be like "I can excuse a mountain of children's corpses but I draw the line at one dead 22-year-old Swede" probably won't be the best activists, either. In any case I doubt that Thunberg getting murdered will significantly hasten the fall of Zionism, rather it'll just be one more in a long string of wretched, flashy displays of Zionism's impunity.

But I guess I'm just thinking about this recent situation with that raging queerphobe brutally killing Jonathan Joss. Because what has that act amounted to? It hasn't been very long, no, but from the reaction thus far I'm not really expecting Joss' murder to lead to any meaningful changes in San Antonio with regard to policing or the quality of life of Queer Natives. All that the reaction to Joss' murder has led to thus far, really just seems to be a whole lot of people swearing in anger, but feeling powerless and dejected to actually change anything in practice.

I am feeling powerless and dejected and its eating me up inside. Nothing actually works and the little my org does isn't making enough impact to matter.

[-] Andrzej3K@hexbear.net 6 points 9 months ago

I bet it does matter. We're all subject to the tides of history ultimately, but that doesn't mean you shouldn't do what good you can in the meantime.

Quantitative change leading to qualitative change, comrades 🙂‍↕️ every drop we can put into the bucket is a drop more towards it overflowing

It's good to be reminded. It's just hard to see all of this going on while we are picketing a Anti-Abortion Center. I know it's something... I just wish we had a way to directly hinder ICE or make a more direct impact vs. general organizing.

Welcome to c/news! We aim to foster a book-club type environment for discussion and critical analysis of the news. Our policy objectives are:

We ask community members to appreciate the uncertainty inherent in critical analysis of current events, the need to constantly learn, and take part in the community with humility. None of us are the One True Leftist, not even you, the reader.

Newcomm and Newsmega Rules:

The Hexbear Code of Conduct and Terms of Service apply here.

  1. Link titles: Please use informative link titles. Overly editorialized titles, particularly if they link to opinion pieces, may get your post removed.

  2. Content warnings: Posts on the newscomm and top-level replies on the newsmega should use content warnings appropriately. Please be thoughtful about wording and triggers when describing awful things in post titles.

  3. Fake news: No fake news posts ever, including April 1st. Deliberate fake news posting is a bannable offense. If you mistakenly post fake news the mod team may ask you to delete/modify the post or we may delete it ourselves.

  4. Link sources: All posts must include a link to their source. Screenshots are fine IF you include the link in the post body. If you are citing a Twitter post as news, please include the Xcancel.com (or another Nitter instance) or at least strip out identifier information from the twitter link. There is also a Firefox extension that can redirect Twitter links to a Nitter instance, such as Libredirect or archive them as you would any other reactionary source.

  5. Archive sites: We highly encourage use of non-paywalled archive sites (i.e. archive.is, web.archive.org, ghostarchive.org) so that links are widely accessible to the community and so that reactionary sources don’t derive data/ad revenue from Hexbear users. If you see a link without an archive link, please archive it yourself and add it to the thread, ask the OP to fix it, or report to mods. Including text of articles in threads is welcome.

  6. Low effort material: Avoid memes/jokes/shitposts in newscomm posts and top-level replies to the newsmega. This kind of content is OK in post replies and in newsmega sub-threads. We encourage the community to balance their contribution of low effort material with effort posts, links to real news/analysis, and meaningful engagement with material posted in the community.

  7. American politics: Discussion and effort posts on the (potential) material impacts of American electoral politics is welcome, but the never-ending circus of American Politics© Brought to You by Mountain Dew™ is not welcome. This refers to polling, pundit reactions, electoral horse races, rumors of who might run, etc.

  8. Electoralism: Please try to avoid struggle sessions about the value of voting/taking part in the electoral system in the West. c/electoralism is right over there.

  9. AI Slop: Don't post AI generated content. Posts about AI race/chip wars/data centers are fine.
