Doug seemed to have embraced the cringe and he seems genuinely more happy now with his crew just doing cringe silly stuff for his critic videos. While he also does some more serious reviews that is just him talking to the camera without the critic stuff.
Yea, 5 years ago he did improve a lot and seemed to have returned back to a more detailed videos (like his earthbound and polybius ones) but then he gave up again because whatever. I still find weird that there are people out there angry that he doesn't act like he did back when he was 25.
