I knew it was sectarianism the minute it hit the news. Because this is what Evangelical Protestants do. It's just rare that they do it to other Protestant sects. Usually what they do is church splits and inciting/enacting religiously motivated violence against non Christians or perceived anti Christian groups. Not attacking each other. But I still assumed it was probably interchurch violence, because that certainly didn't seem farfetched.
Well they're not attacking each other, they're attacking Mormons And as a former friend who was a really devout lutheran told me years ago, "We don't really consider the Mormons Christians."
This is also useful for the Mormon church because it feeds their victim complex. A big part of their founding story is that they were unfairly persecuted by bigots across the US and driven from their “homeland” to Utah.
That is, unfortunately, true.
Yea, it also coincided with the death of their prophet. They gonna be feeling their oats
Tbf, I don't consider the Mormons to be Christians either. But, my opinion of the mainstream Religious Right isn't all that much higher than my opinion of the Mormons.
And nothing infuriates both groups involved in a Christian interchurch conflict more, when one or both are a particularly oddball sect, than referring to both groups as just "Protestants" and talking about it the way you'd talk about two different Baptist congregations having a spat over some minor day to day matter rather than a meaningful theological conflict.
I think most sects of Christianity, if they understood Mormon beliefs, wouldn't consider them Christian. Especially if you just told them the beliefs and asked if that person is a Christian or not.
