Welcome to c/news! We aim to foster a book-club type environment for discussion and critical analysis of the news. Our policy objectives are:
-
To learn about and discuss meaningful news, analysis and perspectives from around the world, with a focus on news outside the Anglosphere and beyond what is normally seen in corporate media (e.g. anti-imperialist, anti-Zionist, Marxist, Indigenous, LGBTQ, people of colour).
-
To encourage community members to contribute commentary and for others to thoughtfully engage with this material.
-
To support healthy and good faith discussion as comrades, sharpening our analytical skills and helping one another better understand geopolitics.
We ask community members to appreciate the uncertainty inherent in critical analysis of current events, the need to constantly learn, and take part in the community with humility. None of us are the One True Leftist, not even you, the reader.
Newcomm and Newsmega Rules:
The Hexbear Code of Conduct and Terms of Service apply here.
-
Link titles: Please use informative link titles. Overly editorialized titles, particularly if they link to opinion pieces, may get your post removed.
-
Content warnings: Posts on the newscomm and top-level replies on the newsmega should use content warnings appropriately. Please be thoughtful about wording and triggers when describing awful things in post titles.
-
Fake news: No fake news posts ever, including April 1st. Deliberate fake news posting is a bannable offense. If you mistakenly post fake news the mod team may ask you to delete/modify the post or we may delete it ourselves.
-
Link sources: All posts must include a link to their source. Screenshots are fine IF you include the link in the post body. If you are citing a Twitter post as news, please include the Xcancel.com (or another Nitter instance) or at least strip out identifier information from the twitter link. There is also a Firefox extension that can redirect Twitter links to a Nitter instance, such as Libredirect or archive them as you would any other reactionary source.
-
Archive sites: We highly encourage use of non-paywalled archive sites (i.e. archive.is, web.archive.org, ghostarchive.org) so that links are widely accessible to the community and so that reactionary sources don’t derive data/ad revenue from Hexbear users. If you see a link without an archive link, please archive it yourself and add it to the thread, ask the OP to fix it, or report to mods. Including text of articles in threads is welcome.
-
Low effort material: Avoid memes/jokes/shitposts in newscomm posts and top-level replies to the newsmega. This kind of content is OK in post replies and in newsmega sub-threads. We encourage the community to balance their contribution of low effort material with effort posts, links to real news/analysis, and meaningful engagement with material posted in the community.
-
American politics: Discussion and effort posts on the (potential) material impacts of American electoral politics is welcome, but the never-ending circus of American Politics© Brought to You by Mountain Dew™ is not welcome. This refers to polling, pundit reactions, electoral horse races, rumors of who might run, etc.
-
Electoralism: Please try to avoid struggle sessions about the value of voting/taking part in the electoral system in the West. c/electoralism is right over there.
-
AI Slop: Don't post AI generated content. Posts about AI race/chip wars/data centers are fine.
Is beyond terrifying. There has been a lot of troubling news to read in the past few years. This one handily takes the cake. The most egregious act they’re accused of doing is…throwing stuff and helping each other pay off bail/pay for each others living supplies??
But from the sound of it, the most devious thing the GAG thinks they’ve done is subscribe to ANARCHISM! “defendants are anti police, anti government, and anti corporatist…” You…just described SIXTY PERCENT OF PEOPLE UNDER THE AGE OF FORTY.
This is such a dangerous shot across the bow for any of us ever thinking of trying to stand up for justice or goodness. Which is exactly what they want. This country has been putting anarchists to death since we’ve existed. For nothing more than the term “anarchist.” This is fuckin scary.
Last time I checked that isn't a crime
That’s the point. That’s part of what makes this so terrifying. They dedicated six pages of their report to describing their beliefs as anarchists. Which goes to show that it’s a big part of what they’re being prosecuted for. Their ideas are dangerous and they need to be put away, is basically the argument. And fuckin RICO? Like…if I were he lawyer I’d make hay out of this big deal about them being anarchist and charging them under the laws used to charge organized crime. Because there seems to be an inherent disconnect there. RICO is used to charge up the chain of the mob…but anarchists don’t have an “up the chain.” You’re trying to charge a loose group of idealists as you charged the New York City mafia dons? Get the fuck out of here.
More and more over the last few decades, media and governments have been intentionally mislabeling ideological movements as organizations.
The first big one was Al Qaeda. It has never been an organization, it's literally just a vague set of beliefs. There was practically no coordination between bin Laden's group and any other Al Qaeda group.
Another was Anonymous. At any given point no more than 5 people were actually in any sort of communication or association with each other, it was just nerds doing online bullshit alone and pretending to be part of something bigger. This was breathlessly reported as a "hacker group" in the media.
In our atomized present world, there are fewer and fewer real organizations doing anything, and often times the fastest path to change (or at least prominence), is by posting some viral thing that gets a bunch of disassociated people to take some kind of action.
And it's very easy to get around the shocking concept of prosecuting "thought crimes" by simply calling an ideology an "organization".
If they commit the egregious acts of owning books, black clothing, fabric, and paint then actually it is illegal, at least on a defacto level.
It is nowbe gay
do crime
Good people, please run for office and/or vote. If we forfeit the game these fucking evil people stay in power and will do everything they can to neuter any direct action.
Literally who are you going to vote for to stop the persecution of anarchists in favour of cops? This is bipartisan. This is the same grand jury that got Trump.
You really think AOC, Bernie, and Biden are putting energy into using RICO against cop city protesters? Just as much as Georgia Republicans?
And of Xi and Putin have done no wrong, blah blah.
