Makes sense. IIRC there's games still being released for the last-gen Xbox and Sony consoles, or if there isn't they only stopped very recently, and the new consoles are a couple years old now. The 3DS still got games for about a year into the Switch's life. Supporting last-gen hardware for a while into the current gen is nothing new.

Absolutely there is, Fifa or FC now is definitely available on Xbox series one and PS4.

But Nintendo are a different kettle of fish, they needs to sell consoles and games. New first party titles are unlikely to be on last gen going forward with Xbox and PS. But third party will sell for the biggest market.

Nintendo also has a history of positioning their last gen console as the budget alternative to a newly released console. They have even made brand new redesigns (Wii Mini, GBA Micro) of last gen systems.

When a new system comes out, especially if it is backwards compatible, there is a flood of used systems in the market from people trading up. Those systems need games to play and Nintendo is happy to supply them with all of the games they missed.

Yeah I wouldn't use EA Sports as the yardstick here as they keep them coming long after everyone else has given up on a platform. FIFA 14 came out on the PS2 in 2013; the same year the PS4 launched.
