I guess, honestly I stopped caring about competitive after a certain point cause it felt like it was just a game of numbers; what I really want is to feel more connected to the Pokémon world as a whole, if you're gonna add new mechanics then add something that incentives players to do it, like giving Trainers their own levels and stats.
In the manga it's stated that Trainers also have to be physically and mentally fit as well as knowing battle prowess so a new mechanic like that might be interesting, at least it'd be something other than "Pokémon change form/use move temporarily" that they've repeatedly done since Gen 6 (which funny enough imo is when the quality of the games took a nosedive and never recovered).
If we are talking competitive they really need to rework certain mons and moves, because there's only so many ways you can make the same move, but a different type and maybe different effects.
(Sorry about the wall of text this is like my primary special interest 😭 I shouldn't really apologize for that but w/e)
