They did manage to use a modified battleship cannon to fire things into orbit. I think the main problem is not knowing how much explosive power you'll get for a given eruption.

You can't shoot things into orbit with a battleship cannon, the acceleration is just too great for a rocket to survive. You can shoot them very high, but not into orbit.

Space guns have to be very, very big to shoot a rocket at a survivable speed.

Iraq had a space gun project, but Israel assassinated it's chief engineer.

Not knowing how much is not that big an issue. If it's too much, then it becomes an interplanetary ship. If it's not enough, then it will come down soon enough and we can just try again on an another volcano. It's probably going to require a bit of patience from the crew, passengers and offspring, but eventually there will be a big enough eruption and it will all work out smoothly in the end.
