Why do people hate taking showers in the first place? Is this a meme that just gets perpetualized online or do people actually feel that?

[-] Psythik@lemmy.world 29 points 10 months ago

I hate them because I work 12 hour shifts and so I have very little time to myself at the end of the day. But what I hate even more is smelling like shit. So I figured out that if I buy a water resistant Bluetooth speaker and listen to podcasts in the shower, suddenly I don't feel like I'm cutting into my limited freetime as much anymore.

That said, if some technology came out that automatically bathes you while you sleep, I'd be an early adopter.

I also do 12-15hr days. And I’m usually on my feet. So standing up the in shower is a hard concept to accept. I need to get a shower chair.

[-] Psythik@lemmy.world 5 points 10 months ago

What I do is lift the curtain and lay the bottom of it across the edge of the tub, then I sit down there. The curtain rod has yet to come crashing down on my head, but you have to be careful not to spill water outside of the tub, because it will pool up behind you and make a big mess if you're not careful when standing up and putting the curtain back.

Hope I explained this adequately, cause it will save you some money on not getting a chair.

[-] AnUnusualRelic@lemmy.world 1 points 10 months ago

This requires a tub though. A chair can be simpler.

So in your case it’s less around the shower and more around available time. Do you feel the same about eating and other “daily tasks”?

[-] Oszilloraptor@feddit.de 14 points 10 months ago

Not OP, but yeah...

There are a few mental/neurological conditions that lead to a big adversion against ordinary recurring tasks.

(In my case it's PDA; but it's something that I see across multiple neurodivergent spectrums, as well as in people with depression)

Im a different person but I feel all that so much and I dont even have little free-time >v<

[-] BalooWasWahoo@links.hackliberty.org 3 points 10 months ago

Like psythik, I hated all those things because of the little time I had to myself. It's not that I hated the task; showering, eating, and even talking with the neighbors were all enjoyable in their own way (very limited talking time with the neighbors though, for sure, lmao!), but it would always feel like intrusions into the time I had for hobbies or relaxing.

[-] ilhamagh@lemmy.world 1 points 10 months ago

Oof yes, eating ( for sustenance ) is such a chore, also sleeping.

[-] Master@lemm.ee 5 points 10 months ago

This is how the robots take over by drowning us in our sleep.

[-] Daxtron2@startrek.website 13 points 10 months ago

Autism, do not like the feeling at all

[-] Szyler@lemmy.world 12 points 10 months ago

To add to this. The sensory experience of showers is a lot.

  1. being comfortable in your warm clothes
  2. having to take them off to get cold
  3. having to get wet and warm
  4. having to dry yourself with a rough (ish) towel
  5. Getting cold again
  6. Damp air makes it harder to breathe
  7. Putting on different clothes which potentially feels different from the used ones
  8. Getting out of the bathroom to non-humid air
  9. Coldness of the remaining water (hair etc) evaporating

I also have sound sensitivities, so the sound of water hitting the floor is also disturbing.

[-] Daxtron2@startrek.website 3 points 10 months ago

I hate when my hair is wet and touching my skin, but I hate the noise of blowdriers more so

[-] uriel238@lemmy.blahaj.zone 6 points 10 months ago

I developed a condition in my forties in which I'd itch fiercely after taking a shower. My doctor couldn't work out why but it had to do with residual water evaporating on my bare legs in warm weather.

After that I developed a resistance to showering, even though that condition has remitted for years now.

[-] kilgore_trout@feddit.it 4 points 10 months ago

I don't like taking showers because it leads me to sad thoughts.

[-] OrnateLuna@lemmy.blahaj.zone 2 points 10 months ago

I hate it bc it takes some much effort for me to actually go and do it and even afterwards the rewarding feeling is barely there. If I could not take showers I doubt I'd do it even once a year, just wastes my time and mental effort

[-] SsxChaos@lemmy.ml 1 points 5 months ago

After taking off my toe nail the doctor has recommended me to keep it dry the first month and insisted to never let it get wet no matter what, so the first time I failed since I like taking showers if not daily at least twice a week, so they had to remove it once again because the nail grew wrong and piercing the meat so the second time they removed it now, let's just say I took a shower only once these couple of weeks and I now have a water phobia. I can't describe the pain of touching water directly on the meat when you don't have a nail..
