"Yes I want to be part of a proletarian mass movement but liking sports is normie boring low-IQ primate brain behavior" -statements dreamt up by the utterly deranged

it seems like a lot of comments here are implicitly talking about US football but there are a lot of other sports out there, people generally don't care whether you're into their sport as long as you're into some sport

people generally don't care whether you're into their sport as long as you're into some sport

That's not any better.

I don't hate sports, but i hate a lot of the cultural brainworms around sports. I'm not sure if they're as bad as they were when i was a kid, but they used to be awful. One of those is the expectation that if you were born male you MUST care about sports. You MUST be able to have a conversation about THE GAME. Obviously these things are deeply rooted in the enforcement of patriarchy. Patriarchy is the actual problem and the thing i hate, but you can't ignore how sports (at least in the US - your country may vary) plays a role in that. That doesn't nake sports inherently bad - they aren't. But the status of sports as "this is the good and normal thing to like - and you must like one of them to be normal" is fucked

everyone on this site seems to struggle with irl social interaction and let me tell you being able to do basic sports talk is like playing the socialization game on easy mode

Yeah the site has a sizable neurodiverse community and we have spent all our lives being made to justify to others why we don't just "be normal."

I'm on the spectrum, the spectrum isn't aligned against sports except under some archaic jock/nerd viewpoint. I know of at least a few big athletes that are out about being on the spectrum. Lots of special interest material to be found. Many sports, especially rock climbing & BJJ, that pair very well with neuroatypical makeup due to the huge depth of techniques to be learned.

Okay but what if sports aren't one of my special interests

I mean I enjoyed parkour back when I was in the right environment for it but the average prole I'm meant to appeal to probably doesn't know or care much about parkour

[-] hypercracker@hexbear.net 4 points 2 months ago

I would say that is fine, and was the case for me for a long time too, but don't foreclose yourself to the idea that it could be one of your interests in the future.

I don't struggle with that. The idea that people who aren't into sports are socially awkward is yet another toxic trope.

[-] BurgerPunk@hexbear.net 8 points 2 months ago

Me: the expectation to do sports talk is a toxic cultural expectation of the patriarchy to enforce gender role confirmity.

You: just do basic sports talk bro, it'll be easier for you

[-] Eris235@hexbear.net 8 points 2 months ago

You are right. But like, 'learning to do sportstalk' to help with 'socialization' (especially at work) doesn't make me like sports. If anything, I kinda makes me think its dumber.

But yeah, sports, beers/alcohol, guns, hunting, all classic 'guy talk' I'm decently good at, despite none being things I'm really into.

I think they'd just mock you if you're into curling or, like, badminton

[-] Inui@hexbear.net 6 points 2 months ago

Badminton was literally the only sport I enjoyed as a teenager and would be willing to try playing again today sadness Hitting floaty objects with a racket is fun.

[-] Nakoichi@hexbear.net 5 points 2 months ago

rn at my work they are selling these led light up badminton sets and I kinda wanna buy one. I used to play it at my grandparents house as a kid and I remember it being quite fun and playing it in the dark with removed bits while high as fuck would be awesome.
