I would say my Hue lights system because I can modulate the lighting to my mood or what I need.

My 29' sailboat. I've lived aboard off grid for over 5 years now. I'll never willingly move back to land, I'll die out here. Under $20k btw.

None, I live on the hook. No rent, no slip fees.

How do things like mail work? And what if you need to put in an address into a form?

[-] nobleshift@lemmy.world 2 points 23 hours ago* (last edited 23 hours ago)

I use a private PO box from a company that specializes in Dockside Services in Seattle / Ballard Wa. address, mail, ID, etc etc services for roamers. I have them forward to a temp address or General Delivery wherever I'm at. I also can use the Amazon lockers / Wholefoods, but I try to as little as possible. Outside of the US it gets a little trickier.

This was my plan before I got married. Cool to hear someone living the dream.

[-] nobleshift@lemmy.world 3 points 1 day ago

aaah man that makes me sad. Are you sure you can't still do it?

[-] blindbunny@lemmy.ml 3 points 1 day ago

Probably not but we'll see my life is kinda up in the air rn.

Yep. ' is common for feet and " for inches so 6'3" would be 6 foot, 3 inches.

[-] Rhynoplaz@lemmy.world 8 points 2 days ago

Don't want to end up with an 18 inch stonehenge.

Yes. It's a Bayfield 29 to be exact

Do you have an income? I'm just curious how this works. Do you catch most of your food?

I do freelance / contract work in IT and marine/boat stuff. I live on anchor for about $2000 / yr, that's the cost of replacing ground tackle (anchor chain lines parts plus some extra$). No rent.

I fish/crab/lobster, but it's not enough for full-time subsistence.

[-] WordBox@lemmy.world 3 points 1 day ago

Where can you put your boat while you do contract work?

[-] nobleshift@lemmy.world 8 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

At anchor, lock it up, have a neighbor look after it, pop a fresh prepaid SIM into the camera, but that's only like once a year I do this and 'flyin'. I stipulate only a certain amount of fly-ins a year.

I do primarily remote work, my current employer is based in France and anything I do for work marine wise is local, unless I'm helping with a delivery.

But if I had a 9-5 brick & mortar job, I would just leave & lock the boat, take a 10-20 minute dinghy ride in to shore and tie up / lock up at a public dock (some have a small fee).

Sounds super nice.

Personally, I'll have to do with watching Acorn To Arabella to second-hand enjoy that life
