This is bad right? No known links means this is spreading undetected through the population right now. doomjak

Trudeau bans Tiktok from operating in Canada, but not banning Canadians from using it? Essentially just forcing Tiktok to close their Canadian offices and lay off their employees.

All the talk about TIFF cancelling the documentary about Russian soldiers is breaking my brain. It's not enough that the documentary is already pro Ukraine by showing the Russian soldiers become disillusioned with the war, anything that shows Russians as human beings cannot be allowed in Western media. Knowing kkkanada they would gladly show a documentary humanizing Nazis but Russians are a bridge too far

I am receiving reports that the Trans Mega has ties to Shadow Inc. And is obfuscating the primary results

They're really trying to pull the US into this by escalating and provoking a serious response

Setting up following this guide: https://mullvad.net/en/help/shadowsocks-android

And I have everything in OpenVPN and Shadowsocks set up like they say, but when I try to connect to the Shadowsocks server I get the error "Failed to detect internet connection: connection closed". The upload/download shows I can upload at ~30 kbps but no download.

I'm on MIUI 14 which may be the problem because I know it has some issues with...everything really... But I turned off power saver so it should be allowed to run in the background

And not in a good way.

The movie is written by Nick Pinkerton, who I've never heard of before but is apparently associated with the Red Scare Pod in some way. The movie is a mumblecore surrealist comedy loosely based on Alice in Wonderland, where the main character travels through different parts of the United States and meets different characters. It's got some funny parts and it held together well enough in the beginning but it starts to drag by the second vignette and really starts to broadcast where it leans politically.

The main character essentially acts listlessly throughout the entire movie and calls things and people ableist slurs. While other characters are supposed to...I guess represent different political positions in the US? I don't really know what the point was meant to be, but the vibe is "caring about things is dumb". There's four main vignettes which boil down to the following:

spoiler

  1. A group of anarchists that never actually profess any political beliefs besides not working and eating food from the garbage. The main anarchist character is immediately shown to b a sex pest and the group then goes out to a field to fight Nazis that aren't there. (This is the only representation of the political left in the movie)

  2. An academic Nazi who takes in our main character and lets her live in his house. He is given ample time to espouse his ideas and does not attempt to sleep with the main character which is shown to be a big deal. She lives with him as a tradwife for some time, and is like happy with it I think? But eventually runs away

  3. Two New York film makers who are making a period piece. Sorry I really don't know what this one was trying to say it just felt random, but the film shoot ends when Nazis shoot everyone.

  4. An Arabic guy who saves the main character from the shooting, but oh no! It turns out he's locking her away to be his wife and also he lives in a terrorist training camp.

And then finally the writer of the movie shows up as a Catholic monk to save the main character and talk about miracles for some reason.

Maybe I don't get it because I don't really vibe with this kind of art. But genuinely this movie was pretty boring and it feels gross when you know the politics behind it. I will give them credit though, I was anticipating a TERFy joke the entire movie and I didn't catch one.

Went to see Challengers last night (good movie btw) and before the movie they played the most unhinged ad I've ever seen. It was AI generated children talking about being victims of the holocaust. It straight up looked like one of those ai tiktok slop stories that bot farms make. Something about a giant image of a child talking about gas chambers while their eyes shifted unnaturally and gazed into nothingness really made me uncomfortable.

Apparently it was to encourage Holocaust education?? Just absolutely terrible execution

I haven't been able to find the ad online yet but if anyone does feel free to share with the class

If you're into the idea of a John Wick esque action movie where Dev Patel fights the BJP and RSS then I really recommend this.

It doesn't outright name the BJP but it's pretty obvious. It's also got some good commentary on land seizures, along with the treatment of indigenous and Muslim communities in India. Also some good representation of the Hijra community which I haven't seen mentioned in much Western media

I'm not one to go on about how great presidents used to be because they all suck in different ways but goddamn this Biden drama has reminded me of this Abraham Lincoln quote. Like just imagine any president in the last 50 years saying anything close to this coherent:

From whence shall we expect the approach of danger? Shall some trans-Atlantic military giant step the earth and crush us at a blow? Never. All the armies of Europe and Asia...could not by force take a drink from the Ohio River or make a track on the Blue Ridge in the trial of a thousand years. No, if destruction be our lot we must ourselves be its author and finisher. As a nation of free men we will live forever or die by suicide.

Like that goes hard and actually uses poetic language, meanwhile politicians now can barely form a sentence

Canada is having difficulty hiring diplomats to work in the United States as unions cite increased violence and lack of access to medical care in the United States as reasons for why diplomats are choosing to take posts in other countries and avoiding working in the Great Satan

The Toronto police have charged a man with a hate crime after he waved a PFLP flag at a protest this is pretty unprecedented and blatantly biased considering how often you see chuds flying Confederate flags in rural areas of the country with no one stopping them

The Canadian government has arrested Tarek Loubani, a doctor who was previously arrested by Egypt in 2013 for attempting to enter Gaza to provide aid, and in 2018 was shot in both legs by the IOF. He was arrested for...spraying ketchup on the wall outside of a Pro-Israel MPs office. What a joke of a country kkkanada

Trudeau kkkanada says he is not ready to accept US and Israeli claims that a Palestinian group was responsible for the hospital attack

Cmon now's the time make a statement supporting Palestine, make your dad proud fidel-sarcastic

Also he could make this his moment to piss off the USA like his other dad Pierre did with Cuba

[-] Kaputnik@hexbear.net 71 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

In Canada the only party showing any support for Palestinians is the NDP, which is sad because they're the most milquetoast socdems I've ever seen and their support is similarly weak. But when one representative goes a little bit farther and actually calls for ending the occupation of Palestine, the party leadership forces her to apologize and the government of Ontario is trying to prevent the MPP from being recognized as a sitting representative. Literally exposing how meaningless our conceptions of liberal democracy are when the people who voted for this representative are being told they can't actually vote for those ideas because it's out of step with the western party line

In the spirit of the country of the week discussion, I'll talk a bit about Italian Libya.

Generally when people think about Italian colonialism in Africa they think about the Italian-Ethiopian Wars and the occupation of Ethiopia, but the Italian occupation of Libya lasted much longer, starting in 1911 after Italy defeated the Ottoman Empire and gained control over the area. Something I hear often in revisionist history is that a defining feature of Fascism is not the ethnic cleansing of an out group because Italy wasn't involved in the Holocaust until Germany pushed it. Which obviously is bullshit on its own, but it completely ignores Italy's colonial crimes because those don't count according to liberals.

Under the fascist government, Italy pursued mass scale ethnic cleansing in Libya. This including expelling over 100,000 people in Cyrenaica from their lands to move in Italian settlers and moving these displaced Libyan people into concentration camps between 1930 and 1931, notably this happened before beginning of the Holocaust in Europe. Out of the 100,000 Libyans moved to concentration camps, 40,000 of them would be dead by 1933. The Italian government would also undertake large pacification campaigns against the Indigenous Libyan population, one of these included the mass killing of civilians in the Cyrenaica province that led to the deaths of over one quarter of the entire population.

Overall this is a similar story to many colonial ventures in Africa but one that is rarely talked about. After WW2 the colony would be passed to British and French administration and these crimes would never be addressed. Most likely because addressing these crimes would also implicate the British and French governments genocides in their own occupations of Africa.
