I'm half joking. But as a 30-something who used to be very active, I recognize I'm over the hill and my joints sound like pop rocks

Like if there's a huge order going to what you clearly know is a single person living alone, how often (if at all) are you internally judging them?

Everyone seems so good at English so I wondered how many people learned it to such proficiency and how many are just natives

I'm just concerned that the government and corporations seem to be planning to destroy the current internet, perhaps turning it into a garbage dump using artificial intelligence, and create a new internet that will require personal identification.

This means that many overly extreme films, etc. may either be banned, or if you watch them, you may be fined for disloyalty or extremism for example.

Forgive my paranoia, but I'm interested in your ideas.

Isolated servers (lemdro.id)
submitted 1 day ago by Etlaris@lemdro.id to c/asklemmy@lemmy.ml

Hi. I was wondering if there are some important isolated servers that do not participate in the federation and thus require joining them? Or these are mostly small private servers that are not worth attention in general?

I have been a big sports fan all my life, but I feel myself withdrawing HARD from pro sports this year.

Main culprits for me:

  • The gross enshitification of being a sports fan.

Ticket and concession prices are though the roof. It requires multiple subscriptions to follow your team.

Worst one is fan merchandise which has completely turned to shit. When Fanatics bought the rights to every leagues jerseys, the quality completely fell off. I used to be able to buy a stitched premium jersey for $150. Now they want you to spend close to $300 and everything is screen printed. I have not bought a new jersey in 5 years.

  • Advertising on everything.

It used to be that you would put up with what I considered a fair amount of advertising. 5 min commercial breaks after like 20-30 mins of gameplay.

Today though the commercial breaks are not good enough for these leagues. Now they are on the screen always. Patches on jerseys and helmets. Digitally inserted on the field/court.

Worst offenders are the NHL who now have their boards on the rink covered in digitally inserted advertising on their broadcasts. It would be one thing if they just changed ads every once in a while, but they make those things dance around and are insanely distracting. I consider the NHL basically unwatchable because of those stupid fake boards. It is funny to me when they show highlights and you see the real boards with simple advertising and I basically long for those again.

I also used to be a fan of NFL Redzone for alot of years. Not anymore though and if you have watched it lately then you understand why. They always billed themselves as "7 hours of commercial free sports," but over the years they started to really test what that meant. They didn't take proper commercial breaks, but suddenly sponsored segments were everywhere on the screen and they would pop up these ads on the edge of the screen and reduce the broadcast to a small box. This season they are showing full commercials now and are not even pretentending to be commercial free anymore. What I found most interesting about this situation though was the fans who basically ridiculed other fans for complaining about the commercials by saying that they should not have expected it to last forever. Which shows how conditioned fans are to expect rampant advertising in sports.

  • The time suck

So many sports games takes 3-4 hours to play. If you are going to follow all your teams games, then that is 100's of hours a season spent watching other people play a game. If you follow multiple teams then we are probably easily encroaching on thousands of hours. We have not even included the hours people spend watching analysis or "hot takes"

If I feel I have to catch up on a game, I can go on YouTube and watch a highlight of the game. The amount of times a 5 hour baseball game has a highlight video the lasts 5 mins really speaks volumes to me.

  • Gambling

Probably the biggest factor that has eroded sports. It started with fantasy football forever ago, but now we see people literally throwing their lives away for parlays. Then seeing pregame shows where they are talking about the over/under of the game.

Sports leagues used to fight gambling to preserve their leagues integrity. Now they support gambling hard, but act shocked and dismayed when their players get corrupted.

  • Pro sports don't involve you

More of a personal realization than anything, as much as you can dedicate yourself to a team and be a diehard fan, these teams don't care about you and never will. They are happy to sell you things stamped with their logo and claim that they will always chase championships, but ultimately they care about profit and themselves. They don't act in the best interest of fans no matter how much they try to convince you otherwise.

This is just the tip of the iceberg for me and I could list examples all day. I think ultimately I am realizing that I need to reevaluate my relationship with sports and not make it such a priority in my life.

Moth trap (feddit.uk)
submitted 1 day ago by Diddlydee@feddit.uk to c/asklemmy@lemmy.ml

We'll be getting a free skinner moth trap soon. Basic one with no lights.

I know fitting a light will be best and I will a few months down the line, but in order to demonstrate to the kids, could I use a number of UV glowsticks we have in the first instance?

Not ideal, I know, but they're good glowsticks - very bright and glow well for 8 hours or so.

I asked here as the moth place I found on Lemmy wasn't active.

Sorry if thia type of question isn't allowed, I tried on AskPolitics as well but that comm looks mega dead so I'm x-posting here

Forgive me if I'm woefully misunderstanding how this all works.

If the government is shut down, and they can't reach an agreement to open it back up, what happens?

Short term? What does it look like in the coming weeks to months if no agreement is reached?

Mid-Term? Within the next year, if things are still all shut down, what happens to things like trade, tax payments, public services?

Long-term? If, worst case scenario, the divisions between the parties with power have grown so though they can't ever reach an agreement: what happens then? Is it an anarchist state? Do we have new coup attempts to take power? Does the US balkanize?

I'm not meaning to inject any sort of bias in my line of questions, I hope I haven't led anyone to any specific conclusions.

Winter is coming in the northern hemisphere, time to ask some hard-hitting questions.

Are you a burrower with a hollowed out snow drift? A mason who shapes and packs each block? Do you have snowball caches in case of attack?

Share your style and techniques.

It feels like the web is becoming more closed every year — fewer open forums, more platforms locking away data and communities behind logins. What do you think are the biggest forces driving the decline of the open internet? Are walled gardens like Discord the main problem, or is it something else like artificial intelligence, corporate consolidation, surveillance, or changing user habits?

Clarification:

Judging by the fact that AI progress will never stop and will eventually be able to replace truth with fiction, it will become impossible to trust any article, and even if it is possible, not all of them, and we won't even be able to tell exactly what's true and what's fiction.

So, what if people from different countries and regions exchanged contacts here and talked about what's really happening in their countries, what laws are being passed, etc., and also shared their well-thought-out theories and thoughts?

If my idea works, why not sober up as many people as possible that only similar methods will be able to distinguish reality from falsehood in the future?

I'm also interested in your ideas, as I'm not much of an expert.

Mine is Consumer.

I hate that word because it is simply a word to brand anybody as lesser than in the eyes of capitalism. It makes your existence look like that is all that you're to do, to be doing and to exist for. Just consume shit. Consume media. Consume content. Consume this and that.

The only association I would use consumption and consume in is in regards to food. Not every god damn thing else and it's pathetic that the word has been applied to everything to the point of it being normalized.

I would prefer buyer or customer. Not Consumer.

I've designated one room in my house to be an Airplane Mode room. Technically it has WiFi but whenever I'm in it I behave as if my phone didn't have any reception. Believe it or not, actively pretending that your phone has no WiFi works better than just passively putting on airplane mode. I always get a sense of calmness when I enter.

What artificial limits do you impose on yourself that ultimately enrich your life?

Edit: changed title

I want something we can both connect with and say "Look, that's us!" We're both very shy and in a new relationship though we always smile at each other <3

We are childhood friends since third grade and everyone suspected us to be dating and "shipped" us together for years. He never stopped liking me on-and-off. I ended up liking him back, obviously.

I even suggested once we should "fake-date" so we could break up like Tweek and Craig but we decided not to fake date and ended up having real feelings for each other.

Let's say zero is straight up shutting your ears, going lalala and storming out of the room, let's say 10 is sitting down with a Nazi, genuinely making an effort to see things from their point of view just to see if you could.

Sure this may sound ridiculous but it's basic knowledge that studying your opponents viewpoints is the best way to counter them and get new insight yourself.

Me? Id like to think I'm a 6, I don't cut family ties over their political opinions but I'm very likely to shut that down with a "I don't want to speak politics with you"

Lemmy can be an echo chamber sometimes, but that doesn't mean everyone here is a mindless zombie, how do you all deal with others who believe differently? Can you back it up?
