Small Program for VBA? (sh.itjust.works)
submitted 3 hours ago* (last edited 3 hours ago) by bridgeenjoyer@sh.itjust.works to c/programming@programming.dev

Alright, so I'll get laughed at here, but one of my 'goals' for work this year is I wanted to take the 4 hour VBA course on youtube and then write a small program after it that does something.

Before you laugh at me using an outdated language, I only chose it because a co worker suggested learning it, and we do use some VBA coded macros in our spreadsheets. We're not a very up to date company.

The reason I never get anything done with learning programming is I never know what to do . And if I do come up with something to do, it will be WAYY too complex over my head, i'll fail at it, then never touch it again. If it's too simple, I won't even want to bother. (Yay ADHD)

So I'm just looking for a couple suggestions for a fun little program to make (and consider the goal 'done'). I know calculators of some sort are an option...I can't really think of anything else. I guess it doesn't actually have to be a useful program but it would be cool if it was.

Those are great !!

I had a combo unit that was all of that, AND a car jack!! It was VERY slow and there's no way I'd go near a car using it as a Jack, but as an absolute emergency it was useful

If you're in car land, a good solid jump pack.

I recommend Napa .

Oh I have this problem too hahah

I love that feature tbh. Glad I can trust it. I use waterfox tho

I'd also like to know. Control is probably the main thing.

I know the matrix.org servers are getting overloaded too.

Especially getting older, I do this a lot more. Looking at things I want to do that ive been putting off, for example. If I have the money, I'm doing it. Now I'm not going full Yes Man on it, but I much prefer living like this. You could very easily die tomorrow so you should do everything you want to while you can, basically.

A lot of people I know seem to lock themselves in this invisible box of "I can't" when they totally can. Obviously, finances is all of our biggest limiting factor in this. But even a lot of wealthier people just dont ever really do what they really want, either out of fear of being judged or failing etc. And then, boom, brain cancer, you're dead in 6 months.

So I say, live it up!!

Now this doesnt mean blow your life savings on cocaine, unless thats really your thing.

Like many of you, I have a decent amount of systems. Unfortunately, this means I always have a mess of cords. I don't enjoy unplugging and replugging stuff to move it around (not to mention it's hard on the ports) so I usually leave everything attached. But I pretty much always have a mess of cords, just from controllers alone.

This is probably unavoidable. I was thinking of getting some commercial shelving like I've seen some people have so at least every console can have room on it's own shelf, rather than being squeezed together on a desk like I have them now.

We all need to give grapes of wrath a read again.

I have been having a ton of fun messing with this, hooking up a dock and a kb/mouse, so funny using my phone this way. More of a party trick than actually useful, for me anyway. if one didn't have laptops, i could see it being handy.

What have you guys been using termux for? The biggest value I saw from it was using ffmpeg on it, and ssh for fun. I can't really figure out what other uses I may want it for. Backups maybe?

I'm not rooted, so I can't do a lot on this crappy samsung, but it's fun to play around.

Co worker just got one of these. Looks pretty neat! I didnt find anyone on Lemmy talking about it yet. Thoughts ?

Guessing its owned by some shithead we shouldnt trust, as things like this usually go.

Edit: yep, war criminal Erik Prince owner. Well, do not support this!

This is my own tip ive been doing and helping others to do as well.

I notice people (especially young) dont use bookmarks/favorites anymore. Many mainly know only 3 things online:. Google (only reading summaries), x, and tiktok. Probably chatbots too.

I myself have a ton of bookmarks for interesting hard to find sites (many I found on Lemmy) and when i find myself endless scrolling or being bored, I go to my bookmarks!! Its always way more enjoyable and actually helps my brain learn. Whether its an article I marked to read later or an old forum post or a blog, it's much better for you than constant content consuming.

Another benefit is you're keeping your web traffic off corpo net and reducing their tracking and revenue from you.

Things like wikwok on f droid are wonderful as well.

I only wish i had kids so I could teach them these things and stop the brain rot! Its really sad how many people are turning into zombies because of endless addictive scrolling.

First project at work (sh.itjust.works)

So to preface, my work is pretty cool, they are good about setting goals to learn things that interest you and putting you in those teams to help out in a small capacity.

My normal job has never been programming. Though Ive been the goto "IT" person at almost every job ive been at, I mess around in most of my free time with computers (installing Linux on stuff, networking NAS stuff, remote desktops virtual machines r pi setups emulators , very simple bash scripts etc all the stuff we lemmings do in our sleep ) but ive never technically coded outside very small vba code learning stuff and watching a lot of videos on multiple languages. Ive just never been able to actually figure out what I'd want to make or be able to stick with it. Also I have mild dyscalculia so I generally get really confused at math especially algebra. I can do it but im really slow.

Ive always wanted to be able to do coding. I feel like I can't be a real computing nerd without that. I just find it so hard to focus when i don't have a real goal or the goal is really small and uninteresting (hello world over and over is not that helpful )

So anyway, this project is just to take excel macro calculators and convert them to apps to be used mainly on iPads but also browsers etc. They've chosen Mendix for this purpose.

Ive not used it before but it seems like a very simple graphical drag and drop style of "programming" (not sure if you can really cal it that) but I'd like to hear if you guys have dealt with it...

Generally, how can I help out on this project (and tbh, try to prove that I'm somewhat smart at this stuff..)?

Linux mint, old ass ddr3 am3 fx 8 core proc

I was wondering why random files kept getting corrupted when transferring to my flash drive, until i downloaded a Linux iso and copied it to a flash drive when i went to check the 256 hash on it was not matching. I had copied the exact file to the drive so there was no way it wouldnt match. Found out the back 3.0 ports work fine, copied the exact same file and the hashes matched. And yes, it was all through reputable sources.

And the odd thing. My front port is just a 2 ft usb cable that rubs through the case out the back and plugs into another 3.0 port. It doesn't pin directly to the mobo, and its not a hub.

So confused how 2ft of cable was corrupting file xfers.

The fools at YouTube have been hard at work circumventing adblock to make our lives miserable so they can make 3 more cents per view. Hopefully ublock catches up.

Fuck these people.

I only use wired. Batteries and charging suck.

Looks horrid.

This will be the new motion plus shit that ruined all TV. Now, the kids think it IS good.

I can't express how much I hate motion plus and the fact that YOU CANT TURN IT OFF on a lot of TVs.

Much like severely compressed limited music. People today hear a dynamic song and dont like it because its too peaky or hurts their ears. They want a sausage waveform.

I'm not old, and I'm already yelling at clouds, ha. Just can't stand these corpos brainwashing people into thinking their shit is good. Its not.

[-] bridgeenjoyer@sh.itjust.works 46 points 2 months ago

They push this narrative hard. My friend absolutely believes all his issues in life are because of the poors.

People are baffled when I say I use the library. They're brainwashed by big tech to think that "no one uses that now" . Pretty frustrating since its the only 3rd space left and people are trying to get it shut down (why should MY taxes pay for that!! We have INTERNET ).

I hate people.
