I'm setting up a computer with linux mint debian editon, and the computer is going to be used by a lot of people who sign in via AD. I have custom display settings (background, pinned applications, theme, custom menu icon) that I would like to apply to all users, but right now they only show up when I log into the account that I set it up on.

Also, is there a way to get a custom firefox esr config to apply to all users as well? I want to remove pocket and make duckduckgo the default browser.

Many thanks.

I love Lemmy (slrpnk.net)

It's brought me joy in life and I've learned so many new things. How cool is it that we get to enjoy all of this cool stuff for free (as in cost) and free (as in freedom)?

That is all. Hope everyone has a nice day.

I'm curious as to why Lemmy rarely shows up in search results on the main internet even if there is a post related to the search input. I've only ever seen a Lemmy result if Lemmy is specified. Is this because we're still relatively small or some other reason?

A friend of mine had purchased all of the Sims games and wanted to see if they could play it on Linux and if so they'd switch to it. The issue is that while the Sims games work on steam, they had purchased it through the EA app, which does not have a native Linux version. It turns out that if you purchase it in the EA app, it won't let you transfer it to Steam even though they bought and owned the damn game. Very ridiculous policy.

This is copied from a Reddit post that I found. I figured this solution should be archived in a non-Reddit place in text format so that other people would know how to fix this.

In this video, I cover how to install and use the EA App on Linux using Lutris, a universal launcher that supports many game launcher services.

https://youtu.be/cLZw8hiu25o

This video will cover the standalone installation of the EA App on Linux, and not when it is launched separately by a game purchased in Steam.

Step 1. Install Wine.

https://github.com/lutris/docs/blob/master/WineDependencies.md

The installation of Wine will differ slightly depending on your Linux distribution, but in all cases, you will be installing it using a package manager.

Although Lutris does uses its own Wine builds, it is still recommended to install all of Wine dependencies to ensure a working installation.

On the Wine Dependencies page on the Lutris Wiki, scroll down to find your distribution’s family and then follow the instructions.

Step 2. Install Lutris.

https://lutris.net/

To download Lutris, click on the Download link at the top of the main page, and then follow the installation instructions for your distribution.

Again, much like Wine, it is likely you will use your distribution’s package manager to install Lutris. Once installation is finished, launch Lutris using your application launcher.

Step 3. Install EA App.

To install the EA App using Lutris, click on the + button at the top left corner, and choose the Search the Lutris website for installers option.

In search bar, type in EA App.

You will need to scroll down to find it, but the option you want is the EA App, 2022, Windows entry.

Click on it, and you should be presented by two options, choose the Standard option by clicking the Install button.

From here, specify an installation location, review the files, and click Continue to start the installation process.

If you get asked to install any dependencies, click Yes.

Eventually, you will be presented with the installation wizard for the EA App, so click Let us Go to proceed.

Shortly after, you will be greeted by a blue screen, but you can close this, and the installation process will finish successfully.

Step 4. Launch EA App.

Now that the EA App is installed, double click the entry in Lutris to launch and you will be asked to sign in with your credentials.

Once signed in, the process is identical to Windows, you can browse through all available games to purchase or install ones already in your library.

Once a game is installed, double click to launch.

One final thing to note, I recommend disabling the In-Game overlay as this can prevent older games from launching, something that also happens on Windows.

To do that, click on the hamburger menu at the top left, navigate to Settings, Application, and toggle off the In-Game overlay.

I don't wanna use Spotify anymore and would like to build my own offline collection of music. The issue is, I have hundreds of albums saved on Spotify that I love listening to. Downloading each individual song would be a royal pain in the ass to do. A lot of the stuff on the megathread doesn't seem to work anymore for music specifically. I also would like to have high quality audio files. Any ideas how to go about doing this? I have no idea how torrenting works.

I'm currently eyeing either an iPod classic 5th gen or a Surfans F20, but definitely want input and suggestions on getting a decent portable music player.

Basically, I'm trying to find something that has good audio quality, is not touch screen, reasonably durable, repairable, upgradable, etc. Big storage capacity is a plus. I don't wanna stream from it or have Bluetooth, mainly just wanna play audio files I load onto there and listen with my ear monitors. Totally fine altering hardware and software in order to get it to the point that meets what I'm looking for.

Any recommendations for this? Many thanks.

Crocs are usually more pointy looking and angular than gators. Crocs are also much more dangerous.

Of course I'd do it. Lack of fingers would be an inconvience, sure, but there's cool technology like 3d printing that I could use to get by okay. The inconvience is more than worth it for people to have basic human needs. Plus, with everyone having basic needs they'd be able to spend their time doing things that they enjoy and are passionate about. In all the population of the earth there are definitely gonna be people whose mission is to get people functioning bionic fingers that work like the real deal. I don't care about people knowing. It would be more annoying if they did because then people would constantly be thanking me and receiving compliments is awkward.

This conveys an emotion that does not have a word in English

What's the point of making over generalizing statements like this?

I'm telling y'all this worked wonders for me. The other day I was feeling like shit and was convinced everything's fucked and I'm fucked and was going down a doom spiral and then I just went on a walk and sat in silence by a creek in the woods for a while and listened to/ observed my thoughts and then I got up and was like "huh. I'm okay now."

Assuming this email is legit, the best thing that you can do is change as many of your passwords as possible to be unique and complex. You may also want to consider deleting old email addresses and getting new ones. Alternatively you can separate your emails addresses by having one for signing up for spammy services, one for personal stuff, one for work/school, etc. Try not to have much overlap between them all.

Edit: I also highly recommended using a temporary email for signing up for stuff whenever possible. I always use this one , but there are plenty of others too.

One makes them money and the other doesn't, unfortunately.

They have a good point. I did research into cornbread for a project and it's suffered from the same issue as tortillas. Most cornmeal that you buy in the store nowadays tastes like sawdust and has to be enriched with a bunch of stuff to make it preserve longer. Originally southern-style cornbread had zero added sugar in it, but most recipes nowadays call for a tablespoon of sugar to balance out the flavor of the sawdust cornmeal so it ends up just tasting like nothing. You don't do that if you use good, heirloom corn, and it actually has flavor.

It ultimately comes down to the quality of the corn and the method that they use to process it and to maximize profits. Stone ground cornmeal yields a better product, but is less efficient.

My apologies. I will update it to have an accessible version.
