New preamble:

Palestinian resistance groups have launched an operation in and around Gaza to fight the genocidal settler state oppressing them. Thousands of rockets have been launched towards the so-called state of Israel, overwhelming the Iron Dome. Settlers and the troops protecting them are being killed in the settlements surrounding Gaza, with many caught by surprise in the first few hours of the operation.

Palestinians are taking many Israeli settlers and soldiers hostage and bringing them back to Gaza. An Israeli general, Nimrod Aloni, has been confirmed captured. Palestinians are also taking military and civilian equipment back. Drones and MANPADS appear to be in use, and a number of Merkava tanks have been destroyed/disabled and their occupants removed and taken hostage. Palestinian forces appear to be heading in two main directions so far: southeast in the direction of Be'er Sheva, and along the coast in the direction of Ashkelon, but settlements all around Gaza have been assaulted and taken. It is obviously unknown how far they intend to go, or what their intermediate goals are.

Israel is bombing the Gaza Strip with aircraft, destroying buildings. It appears that their intelligence on the location of Palestinian forces outside of Gaza is very poor, and haven't been able to meaningfully strike them. Netanyahu has given a statement declaring that Israel is in a state of war. Iran has issued statements in support of the uprising, and Israel has responded with hostility to those comments. In all, the IDF appears to still be in a shockingly bad state hours after the assault began.

Old preamble on Antarctica:

expand

Much of the information for this news post, including both the images in the preamble, came from this article at the National Snow and Ice Data Center, which has been circulating in the media lately.

Image has been taken from this article.

Antarctica has had a uniquely bad year.

While the sea ice extent in the last 50 years or so has been very gradually declining, it has done so very slowly on average - by 0.1% per decade. This began to change in 2016:

Even so, this year is different, showing a remarkable decrease in the maximum sea ice extent. It is unconfirmed (I think) but this year may be the first in which the maximum extent fails to reach 17 million square kilometers - and is more than one million square kilometers lower than the previous record low maximum in 1986.

The fall in sea ice has been linked by some researchers to warming in the uppermost ocean layer caused by lateral and upward mixing of warmer water. The ocean is a gigantic heat sink, and has been absorbing much of the excess heat that humanity has generated via the greenhouse effect. But put enough heat into a heat sink and it will eventually fill up.

These changes in sea ice extent is no mere abstract climate worry or scientific curiosity. It is having a direct, catastrophic impact on the Antarctic's ecosystem. Emperor penguin colonies have had trouble breeding, so much so that:

...there is high probability that no chicks had survived last year in four of the five known emperor penguin colonies in the central and eastern Bellingshausen Sea. This was because the sea ice had melted well before chicks would have developed waterproof feathers. ... Today's report says about one-third of the 62 known emperor penguin colonies in Antarctica were affected by partial or total sea ice loss between 2018 and 2022.

And, last year, scientists conducted a study on the two plants that are able to grow near Antarctica, looking at a single Antarctic island for simplicity, and found that the populations of these plants had exploded in the last decade - growing as much in the last decade as they had in the last 50 years - due to rising air temperatures. It was warm enough for the scientists to wear shorts and remove their shirts.

Resources For Understanding The War

Defense Politics Asia's youtube channel and their map. Their youtube channel has substantially diminished in quality but the map is still useful.

Moon of Alabama, which tends to have interesting analysis. Avoid the comment section.

Understanding War and the Saker: reactionary sources that have occasional insights on the war.

Alexander Mercouris, who does daily videos on the conflict. While he is a reactionary and surrounds himself with likeminded people, his daily update videos are relatively brainworm-free and good if you don't want to follow Russian telegram channels to get news. He also co-hosts The Duran, which is more explicitly conservative, racist, sexist, transphobic, anti-communist, etc when guests are invited on, but is just about tolerable when it's just the two of them if you want a little more analysis.

On the ground: Patrick Lancaster, an independent and very good journalist reporting in the warzone on the separatists' side.

Unedited videos of Russian/Ukrainian press conferences and speeches.

Telegram Channels

Again, CW for anti-LGBT and racist, sexist, etc speech, as well as combat footage.

Pro-Russian

https://t.me/aleksandr_skif ~ DPR's former Defense Minister and Colonel in the DPR's forces. Russian language.

https://t.me/Slavyangrad ~ A few different pro-Russian people gather frequent content for this channel (~100 posts per day), some socialist, but all socially reactionary. If you can only tolerate using one Russian telegram channel, I would recommend this one.

https://t.me/s/levigodman ~ Does daily update posts.

https://t.me/patricklancasternewstoday ~ Patrick Lancaster's telegram channel.

https://t.me/gonzowarr ~ A big Russian commentator.

https://t.me/rybar ~ One of, if not the, biggest Russian telegram channels focussing on the war out there. Actually quite balanced, maybe even pessimistic about Russia. Produces interesting and useful maps.

https://t.me/epoddubny ~ Russian language.

https://t.me/boris_rozhin ~ Russian language.

https://t.me/mod_russia_en ~ Russian Ministry of Defense. Does daily, if rather bland updates on the number of Ukrainians killed, etc. The figures appear to be approximately accurate; if you want, reduce all numbers by 25% as a 'propaganda tax', if you don't believe them. Does not cover everything, for obvious reasons, and virtually never details Russian losses.

https://t.me/UkraineHumanRightsAbuses ~ Pro-Russian, documents abuses that Ukraine commits.

Pro-Ukraine

Almost every Western media outlet.

https://discord.gg/projectowl ~ Pro-Ukrainian OSINT Discord.

https://t.me/ice_inii ~ Alleged Ukrainian account with a rather cynical take on the entire thing.

Hamas says the initial attack was carried out by just 80 fighters. This could explain how it was kept quiet.

Israeli Channel Kan 11 is now saying that there are over 1000 Palestinian fighters currently fighting inside Israel.

American liberals will be frothing at the mouth to do a genocide against the homeless and poor over shoplifting at Target, but can't comprehend that Palestinians might want to do evil shit to people that have been stealing their land, their houses, and their families from them for 80 years.

Why is this sort of discussion so tantalizing for certain portions of the internet. Why is slavery and all of its subgenres like caste systems , serfdom, etc not unequivocally considered bad?

Instead of acting all high-and-mighty and lecturing Palestinians on how to "properly" resist, maybe Western leftists oughto see this as a learning opportunity. You know, start taking notes, learn how Palestine was able to get the fucking jump on Isn'treal and be an actual threat to the fuckers in power.

The unfolding events in Israel and Palestine are deeply alarming.

We need an immediate ceasefire and urgent de-escalation.

And we need a route out of this tragic cycle of violence: ending the occupation is the only means of achieving a just and lasting peace.

Not all of England's 11 million private renters are “weed-smoking people in gangs...smashing up the neighbourhood,” housing minister Rachel Maclean reassured attendees at a Conservative Party conference talk today.

Speaking to an audience of majority landlords, Maclean felt the need to remind them that renters can be Tory voters too, and that some are even “decent people”.

The talk, entitled ‘Going Private: reforming the private rented sector’, featured Maclean, David Simmonds MP, chair of the APPG on Housing and Planning, chief executive of the National Residential Landlord (NRLA) Ben Beadle, as well as representatives from GB News, the New Statesman, and conservative think tank Bright Blue.

Israel is living barely 1% of what the Palestinians have been experiencing for 70+ years.

Seeing the number of israelis who went to the airport to get the fuck out of the country, well, at least they have a chance. For a Palestinian, the only way out is to get shot or blown into pieces by the IDF.

Russian textbook claims German unification was 'annexation'

t's been 33 years. On October 3, 1990, communist East Germany, the German Democratic Republic (GDR), officially joined West Germany. 45 years after the end of the Second World War, Germans were reunited in one sovereign state.

However, the current Russian interpretation of German reunification is causing irritation among German experts and historians. In a new Russian high school history textbook, German reunification is referred to as the "annexation of the GDR." The book was published in September 2023. The authors are Vladimir Medinsky, former Russian Minister of Culture and advisor to President Vladimir Putin, and Anatoly Torkunov, the rector of the Moscow Institute of International Relations.

Labour blocks Palestinian group from using ‘apartheid’ in conference brochure

The Labour Party has told the UK's largest Palestinian advocacy organisation that it cannot refer to Israel as an apartheid state in publicity material ahead of next week's party conference.

Earlier on Wednesday, the Palestine Solidarity Campaign (PSC) said Labour had removed any references related to the word apartheid from PSC’s listing of its stall and fringe meeting in the conference brochure. The event, titled “Justice for Palestinians, End Apartheid”, is set to take place next Tuesday. But this title will not feature in any Labour Party conference literature.

US raises concern with Peru over Chinese control of infrastructure

The US has expressed concern to Peru that China is gaining control over critical parts of the South American nation’s infrastructure, including electricity supply to the capital Lima and a new megaport on the Pacific coast.

Chinese companies have been buying power, mining and port assets across Latin America in recent years but the scale of Beijing’s investments in Peru, along with their strategic position, has caused particular concern, said a senior US official. Washington has raised the issue with Lima directly.

Holy shit, what are the terrifying Chinese communists going to do next? Overthrow their government? Replace the leader with a deeply unpopular one (except for CEOs - they love her!)? Occupy their country with troops?! We must stop them!

Russia’s Crimean Red Line Has Been Erased, by the completely hinged and very sensible people at Foreign Policy.

...

Suckered by Russian propaganda surrounding the peninsula’s supposedly pro-Russian tilt and convinced that any Ukrainian assault on Crimea could spark potential military escalation, Western voices largely shied away from backing any attempts at returning the peninsula to Kyiv’s control. This was seen perhaps most spectacularly last month, when news emerged that Tesla CEO Elon Musk had undercut Ukrainian efforts to target the peninsula because of concerns any attack “could lead to a nuclear war.”

Those concerns were perhaps understandable, insofar as Russian officials have continually rattled a nuclear saber about protecting Crimea from any Ukrainian reclamation efforts. But now, as Ukraine unleashes near-daily assaults on the peninsula, the notion that Crimea presents some kind of Temple Mount—or even any kind of red line—for Russians has crumbled.

In the face of continued drone attacks, long-range missile fires, sabotage operations, and annihilation of military assets across Crimea, Russians have hardly treated the Ukrainian peninsula as some kind of sacred land. Rather than rushing to protect Crimea, Russians have instead begun fleeing the region en masse. Rather than seeing Russians lining up to enlist to aid the Kremlin’s defense of the peninsula, Moscow continues mooting the potential of a second, and far broader, forced mobilization. And rather than resulting in any kind of nuclear conflagration, Russians’ subdued reaction to the continued bombardment of Crimea has dissolved Putin’s claims that the peninsula is some kind of special, sacrosanct land. As McGill University professor Maria Popova recently posted on X (formerly known as Twitter), “Crimea isn’t special, let alone a red line.”

Indeed, with few even noticing, Ukraine’s continued shelling and strikes on the peninsula have illustrated one clear lesson: The idea that Crimea is some kind of holy land that Russians will race to defend—an idea that far too many in the West previously swallowed—is dead. And in that death, a wealth of new opportunities has opened up for Kyiv and for the Western partners who are suddenly realizing Crimea is hardly the sacral land Putin once claimed.

I'm having trouble forming a sentence to reply to this. I am baffled. I am utterly bewildered. This might be the single stupidest article I have read since the counteroffensive began.

They say that Russians aren't rushing to defend Crimea because Russian tourists (that is literally the article they link to, I am not making this up, go click it) don't want to get hit by Ukrainian drone strikes. They say that Russia isn't doing a second mobilization because, presumably, they think that Putin (with an 80% approval rating, over twice that of many western leaders) couldn't do it without his population rebelling against him, and they think that the Russian government is lying about how many people are volunteering and signing up for service, and because so many tens of thousands of Russians are being killed every month on the battlefields, something must eventually break. At no point is there the consideration that perhaps Russian deaths and casualties - in a defensive environment - are actually very low. Or that the Russian government might actually be telling the truth about the recruitment figures.

If Russia had nuked Ukraine over them hitting Crimea with dronestrikes, that would evidence of their barbarity, their brutality, and their weakness because they have no other method to response because their army is broken and destroyed. If Russia doesn't nuke Ukraine over Crimea, it proves that Crimea isn't special, that Russians are cowards that don't want to defend it, that Russia can't stop the strikes, and thus that Russia is weak. Completely nonfalsifiable ideology.

The fact that we're still getting these kinds of articles four months after the counteroffensive began and with no breakthrough by Ukraine really demonstrates the stunning levels of cognitive dissonance that Western analysts are capable of having. Ukraine has essentially not even moved with the combined effort of months and months of military buildup and training, throwing equipment and men at the Russian lines since June, and the conclusion we are meant to draw at this stage? That Ukraine taking Crimea (probably) wouldn't get them nuked after all! It's fair game! We need to support their efforts to retake it! I mean this as genuinely as I can convey it: What the fuck are you talking about?

The universe might be a giant laboratory simulation to see to what depths people can plunge when repeatedly shown evidence that contradicts their worldviews. I hope when Ukraine collapses and Russia marches in, whenever that may be, their brains start leaking out of their skulls as their eyes cannot comprehend what is happening, and we are spared their analysis forevermore. May god have mercy on their souls.

Glad to see the Trots are with us. WSWS:

“A slave-owner who through cunning and violence shackles a slave in chains, and a slave who through cunning or violence breaks the chains–let not the contemptible eunuchs tell us that they are equals before a court of morality!”—Leon Trotsky, 1938

What began Friday night is an uprising of the Palestinian people against the violent and brutally oppressive Israeli occupation. The Netanyahu government has sanctioned the constant theft of Palestinian lands by fascistic Israeli settlers, blockaded the Gaza Strip, targeted members of its ruling Hamas party for assassination and organized provocations against Muslims at Al-Aqsa Mosque. By imposing unbearable conditions on Gaza, it made armed resistance inevitable.

The World Socialist Web Site condemns the vicious and obscenely hypocritical statements of President Joe Biden and leaders of the European Union denouncing the Palestinian resistance as “terrorism” while supporting without any reservations Israel’s onslaught on Gaza.

...

Hamas’s ability to secretly prepare such an operation and launch it on October 6—50 years after the Yom Kippur War—exposes the depth of the crisis of the Israeli state. It is overrun with fascistic elements, has battled a years-long trial of Netanyahu for corruption, and faced mass protests of workers and youth earlier this year, as it tried and failed to ram through a constitutional reform to undermine the legal independence of the judiciary. Its attempt to suppress Palestinian opposition through fascistic terror has failed.

The Netanyahu government was surprised by the Palestinian uprising in much the same way as Nazi commanders in occupied Poland were surprised by 1943 uprising of Jews in the Warsaw Ghetto and the 1944 Warsaw Uprising. Blinded by its arrogance and racial hatreds, it believed that repression had so broken the back of the Palestinians that resistance would be impossible. Its error now exposed, it is moving—also as in occupied Poland, where the Nazis reacted to uprisings by slaughtering tens or hundreds of thousands—towards a bloodbath.

This policy faces mass opposition in the Arab and international working class. Despite the shameless lies of the imperialist powers, there is broad sympathy for the Palestinians among billions of people worldwide. This sympathy and opposition must, however, be politically mobilized. In particular, workers and youth in Israel must separate themselves and oppose the homicidal policies of the Netanyahu government and support the fight of Palestinians against oppression and occupation.
