I guess they had the best 90s colors if you just wanted random sports clothes.

[-] Caffeinated_Sloth@lemmy.world 9 points 2 months ago

Best team logo at the time too.

[-] errer@lemmy.world 5 points 2 months ago

Lotta Rockies and Florida Marlins fans in the 90s for that reason too

Weird way to spell the Suns

[-] duhbasser@lemm.ee 13 points 2 months ago

Same with Might Ducks gear but they didn’t have an official/professional team. Tbh, the mascots for The Hornets and Might Ducks went hard, that hornet looked mad af haha

I grew up in Ohio in the 90’s and everyone was wearing Hornets or Chicago Bulls gear (head to toe) and Might Ducks hats/shirts.

[-] AngryCommieKender@lemmy.world 5 points 2 months ago

Wasn't the ducks because of the Disney movie?

[-] turtlesareneat@discuss.online 5 points 2 months ago

Yes and realistically the Hornets were because the teal/purple combo went super hard in the 90s especially in the form of outerwear.

[-] collapse_already@lemmy.ml 3 points 2 months ago

San Jose Sharks too. I have a San Jose Sharks hat. I don't know why. I grew up a Blues fan.

[-] duhbasser@lemm.ee 1 points 2 months ago

Oh shit! Totally forgot about the San Jose Sharks. Ohio was big into Chicago culture at the time so things from LA or NYC (respectfully) wasn’t seen too often and it was always the “black sheep” of the league that went against the norms of mid-west culture.

Avg mid-western: “San Jose Sharks…ohhh sounds Spanish”

[-] AugustWest@lemmy.world 1 points 2 months ago

I don’t think you meant it that way but it looks funny that you gave the average mid-westerner comment while also mentioning LA in response to San Jose.

Just for any actual avg midwesterners, San Jose is the same distance from LA as Chicago is from Cleveland. Or Indianapolis is from Pittsburg.

[-] duhbasser@lemm.ee 1 points 2 months ago

Yea I didn’t mean any disrespect, just that the name automatically implied it was a Cali team. Same with The Mets or Yankees, those 2 teams to a mid-westerner were essentially the entire east coast. Different times for sure lol

[-] oppy1984@lemm.ee 2 points 2 months ago

Also grew up in Ohio in the 90's, I had two winter coats Ducks and Bulls. Hats, t-shirts, and sweatshirts were all OSU.

Go buckeyes

[-] jballs@sh.itjust.works 12 points 2 months ago

Oh damn, I had wiped this from my memory. But yeah, I used to have a Hornets hat in the 90s despite not being a basketball fan.

[-] DoubleSpace@lemm.ee 10 points 2 months ago

I figure it was based on their rad colors and hornet design.

[-] But_my_mom_says_im_cool@lemmy.world 11 points 2 months ago* (last edited 2 months ago)

They had the flyest colour scheme. The Orlando magic was also a popular one, but that was because it was the birth of Shaq craze. I had the shaq attack toys and the shaq fu video game

[-] AlligatorBlizzard@sh.itjust.works 3 points 2 months ago

Yeah, but fashion wise the Hornets were still the most popular. I grew up in Orlando. I've been to several Magic games. I still had a kid sized Hornets uniform when I was five or six.

Im from Toronto so we were so hyped when we got our own team, and the original raptors logo and colours are still the best

[-] Lucien@mander.xyz 3 points 2 months ago

The Shaq Fu video game, goddamn, what a waste of effort

[-] peoplebeproblems@midwest.social 8 points 2 months ago

That explains the Charlotte Hornets jacket my parents had.

I thought it was because they went to grad school there but you're right, that was the style of the time.

[-] TTimo@lemm.ee 8 points 2 months ago

I was a teenager in France and even there some kids had Hornets jackets. No one questioned it.

[-] driving_crooner@lemmy.eco.br 3 points 2 months ago

I was a teen in Colombia, didn't gave a shit about NBA, but had a Hornets cap bought in a gas station during holidays (iirc, they had a wall of NBA hats, but the Hornets was the choose one)

[-] dohpaz42@lemmy.world 7 points 2 months ago

I was a Hornets fan back in the 90s, but I also lived in Charlotte, so it was a gimmie. I was pissed when Shinn not only moved them to New Orleans, but took the name with them. Hornet’s Nests are a symbol of Mecklenburg county history and we just let part of that heritage walk away with Shinn. I’m glad we finally got it back.

[-] tromars@feddit.org 3 points 2 months ago

I mean, I know that many if not most places in the US are named after European ones, but somehow Mecklenburg caught me really off guard just now

[-] dohpaz42@lemmy.world 3 points 2 months ago

Any particular reason?

North Carolina being one of the original 13 colonies has a lot named after European/British places/people.

[-] tromars@feddit.org 3 points 2 months ago

Nah, I can’t think of any reason tbh. Just somehow unexpected I guess because I usually only hear it in the name of the german state Mecklenburg-Vorpommern.

[-] AlligatorBlizzard@sh.itjust.works 1 points 2 months ago* (last edited 2 months ago)

Los Angeles still needs to give back our basketball team name. Fuckers.

Hornets Starter jacket in like 93.

I'm a white kid in rural Tennessee. Haha absolutely loved it.

[-] Dasus@lemmy.world 5 points 2 months ago

Oh I wasn't aware of the connection but I definitely wore something like that, yeah.

Although I had a.. San Jose Sharks cap? Is that a team?

It is yeah.

I'm not American but Finns loved NHL. I didn't, but my brother and dad did.

[-] Big_Boss_77@lemmynsfw.com 5 points 2 months ago

Didn't it have something to do with NBA Jam?

[-] Psythik@lemm.ee 5 points 2 months ago* (last edited 2 months ago)

I too remember this being the case. I don't even like sports—never even watched a single game until adulthood—and even I was a fan then. They had a cool logo.

Edit: Hell, I didn't even know where Charlotte was in the 90s, yet still... Is there a reason behind this phenomenon?

[-] stinerman@midwest.social 5 points 2 months ago

This was especially true of women. They loved the color scheme. Nearly every woman I knew growing up were Hornets fans if they didn't follow basketball.

Note: I'm saying the colors were popular with women, not that you're a woman if you liked the colors.

[-] Raiderkev@lemmy.world 5 points 2 months ago

This was my squad in NBA jam. Theory confirmed.

[-] GeeDubHayduke@lemmy.dbzer0.com 4 points 2 months ago

Whoa. Sooooooooooo many neurons just connected. This is something i always knew, but didn't know i knew.

[-] VitoRobles@lemmy.today 3 points 2 months ago

This is so crazy. I was a kid in the 90s and got a Charlotte Hornets coat for some reason as a gift. Never even watched a basketball game.

[-] Afflictedlife@lemmy.ml 4 points 2 months ago

Yep, someone gave me the hat. Didn't care about basketball but they nominated me to be a hornets fan

[-] _stranger_@lemmy.world 3 points 2 months ago

This is exactly how I became a Seattle Mariners "fan".

[-] Underwaterbob@lemm.ee 3 points 2 months ago

Phoenix Suns for me. I don't even like basketball.

[-] itsgroundhogdayagain@lemmy.ml 2 points 2 months ago

I think it was a popular team color combo in music videos

[-] Vespair@lemm.ee 2 points 2 months ago

My sister in DC spent so much money on a Charlotte Hornets Starter Jacket.

It was her prized possession.

I am confident she has never watched a Hornets game in her life.

[-] trag468@lemmy.world 2 points 2 months ago

I was in middle school at the time and I had a kick ass pull over hornets starter jacket. I am from upstate NY.

[-] Nastybutler@lemmy.world 3 points 2 months ago

Same. I'm from Alaska, and having no local pro teams, I chose Charlotte for the kick ass colors and because of Larry Johnson

[-] swizzkillz@lemm.ee 1 points 2 months ago

Larry johnson aka grandma ma. He was on family matters, doing commercials, and the logo was cool af.
