Image is the famous photograph Raising a Flag Over the Reichstag, taken during the Battle of Berlin.

On Friday is May 9th, which is the 80th anniversary of Victory Day, which Russia, among other places, celebrates as the day when the Soviets defeated the Nazis. Naturally, one of the current hotspots of fascism in the world today, Ukraine, is essentially threatening that they might strike Russia or even Moscow itself during that timeframe. Any such strike would almost certainly be symbolic and not aimed at anything too important, as I doubt even Zelensky and his American handlers would actually want to kill a world leader, not least somebody like Xi Jinping. But I would not be surprised if they tried something nonetheless, if only to disrupt the event in some way and not actually kill anybody.

And, as we're on this topic, @EllenKelly@hexbear.net has reminded me that Tuesday is the anniversary of the Nazis burning the Institut für Sexualwissenschaf in 1933, an early institute advocating for the rights of LGBT people, and which also provided early forms of gender-affirming surgeries, as well as hormone therapies. We are currently seeing a crackdown on LGBT rights throughout swathes of the imperial core (as well as countries in the periphery, to the extent that those rights existed there already), and this Nazi-inspired movement will be similarly defeated in the future.

Russia-Ukraine Conflict

Examples of racism/euro-centrism during the Russia-Ukraine conflict

Sources:

Defense Politics Asia's youtube channel and their map. Their youtube channel has substantially diminished in quality but the map is still useful.
Moon of Alabama, which tends to have interesting analysis. Avoid the comment section.
Understanding War and the Saker: reactionary sources that have occasional insights on the war.
Alexander Mercouris, who does daily videos on the conflict. While he is a reactionary and surrounds himself with likeminded people, his daily update videos are relatively brainworm-free and good if you don't want to follow Russian telegram channels to get news. He also co-hosts The Duran, which is more explicitly conservative, racist, sexist, transphobic, anti-communist, etc when guests are invited on, but is just about tolerable when it's just the two of them if you want a little more analysis.
Simplicius, who publishes on Substack. Like others, his political analysis should be soundly ignored, but his knowledge of weaponry and military strategy is generally quite good.

From the Economist :

Pakistan shot down 12 drones that entered its airspace from India, warning that its neighbour would “pay dearly for this naked aggression”. Earlier Shehbaz Sharif, Pakistan’s prime minister, vowed to “avenge each drop of blood” after India launched air strikes on Pakistan and Pakistan-administered Kashmir. India was responding to an attack in Indian-administered Kashmir last month. Pakistan denies involvement.

So thus far the entire conflict has been mostly India failing in breaking Pakistan's air defenses.

The US de-escalation with Ansar Allah appears to be at the behest of the Saudis, who were saying it would be embarrassing for Trump to visit while bombing Yemen, and could lead to "complications":

https://www.middleeasteye.net/news/exclusive-saudi-arabia-pressed-trump-stop-attacks-yemen-ahead-visit

Ansar Allah has reportedly, in not so many words, threatened to expand the engagement regionally, especially while Trump is in the region, if the bombings by the US (and possibly it's allies?) don't not stop.

Trump will be visiting KSA next week to meet with GCC leaders, his first official overseas trip of this term.

Bonus tweet, for giggles:

The U.S. Navy lost another F/A-18 Super Hornet this week, after it fell in the Red Sea during an attempted landing on the USS Harry S. Truman aircraft carrier. The reason for Trump's sudden announcement stopping the U.S. bombing campaign against Yemen is becoming more and more clear.

The White House is expected to issue a clarification in the coming hours regarding the ceasefire between the US and the Houthis, which will address the Israeli aspect. It is still unclear whether Israel is included in the agreement that Trump announced a short time ago.

According to NATOpedia, this is what the new pope thinks about stuff:

Pope Leo XIV has opposed the ordination of women to the diaconate. As a bishop Prevost opposed the inclusion of curriculum regarding "teachings on gender in schools" in Peru, stating that the "promotion of gender ideology is confusing, because it seeks to create genders that don't exist". An acquaintance of Pope Leo XIV, Jesus Leon Angeles, noted that he cares for Venezuelan refugees in Peru.

Homosexuality

In 2012, Prevost lamented that popular culture fostered "sympathy for beliefs and practices that are at odds with the Gospel", citing the "homosexual lifestyle" and "alternative families comprised of same-sex partners and their adopted children".

He said some nice things about peace which is always welcome in these times and there is the anecdote of him telling Fujimori to fuck off but he definitely has some vile and bigoted views.

The Pope not speaking in English is a sign that he’s only born in the US but in his heart and mind, he is Peruvian. He even only greeted Peru and in Spanish. Good for him.

Come on Don, you know ending a border dispute as difficult as this one is not the same as a ceasefire.

It would be easier to end the India-China dispute than this.

Another way this India/Pakistan confrontation benefits the US is that it provides more precedent for the possibility of hot conventional war between nuclear powers.

This could make US intervention over Taiwan more plausible, increasing deterrence, while also diverting the Chinese military industrial complex to replace and reinforce exports to Pakistan (particularly air defense).

Joint Israeli - US airstrikes currently taking place on Yemen, airstikes continue for the 52nd day and night in a row.

Daytime airstrikes by the US hit the following governorates:

Al Jawf:

  • Eight airstrikes hit Al-Hazm District early in the morning.
  • Seven airstrikes hit Al Hazm District in the evening.

Sana'a:

  • Three airstrikes hit the Al-Sawad area.

Nighttime airstrikes by Israel hit the following governorates, Israeli media says 30 aircraft were involved and over 50 munitions were used:

Hodeidah:

  • City of Hodeidah hit by multiple airstrikes.
  • Six to Eight airstrikes hit the Port of Hodeidah.
  • Four airstrikes hit a factory/production facility in Bajil District.

Nighttime airstrikes by the US Navy and Air Force hit the following governorates:

Sana'a:

  • multiple airstrikes on the Al-Sawad area again.
  • third round of airstrikes on the Al-Sawad area.

Hodeidah:

  • Three airstrikes on Ras Isa Fuel Port.

Warning for potential graphic imagery during ongoing airstrikes:

Al Masirah TV twitter

Xcancel mirror

The IOF/IDF has released images of the planes that participated in the operation. An Israeli F-15I is seen carrying 5 2000lb GBU-31 JDAM stand in GPS guided bombs, along with conformal and external fuel tanks. 10 of these planes = 50 bombs. The rest of the Israeli aircraft would have been support assets like mid air refueling aircraft, AWACS aircraft, and reconnaissance aircraft/drones. The use of stand in weapons like JDAMs for this attack is notable, as previous Israeli strikes on Yemen, such as those in December last year, used stand off munitions, including the Rampage air launched guided artillery rocket. Like the British a few days ago, the Israelis have taken advantage of the corridors the US Navy has opened in Yemen to carry out stand in strikes.

The corridors get opened by the EA-18G Growler Electronic Warfare and Suppression/Destruction of Enemy Air Defenses aircraft (SEAD/DEAD). This is a picture of an EA-18G on the USS Harry Truman yesterday, May 4, in the standard heavy SEAD/DEAD loadout against for this conflict: 4 AGM-88E AARGM anti radiation missiles, 2 AIM-120 AMRAAM air to air missiles for taking out drones and air to air loitering munitions, and 3 480 Gal fuel tanks for increased range and loiter time over the battle space:

The EA-18G is an extremely important capability. Anyone going into conventional military conflict with the United States will need to counter it and/or develop their own analogue to it.

Houthis and US Reach Oman-Brokered Ceasefire Amid Regional Tensions - Telesur English

Article

The Houthi movement Ansar Allah and the United States have agreed to a ceasefire mediated by Oman. The announcement was made by Oman’s Foreign Ministry, which stated that recent negotiations have helped de-escalate tensions between the two sides.

Under the agreement, neither party will conduct attacks against the other, ensuring the safety of US vessels in the Red Sea and the Bab el-Mandeb Strait. This truce comes as the Houthis had escalated operations against Israeli-linked ships and targets in response to the war in Gaza.

Since November 2023, the Houthis have launched long-range missile attacks, disrupting a key global shipping route that handles around 12% of world maritime trade. The assaults forced commercial vessels to reroute around southern Africa, significantly impacting global supply chains.

A senior Houthi official stated that their campaign aimed to support Gaza by pressuring Israel and facilitating humanitarian aid. He also referenced Donald Trump’s recent remarks about ending US military actions in Yemen, calling it a potential victory for their cause.

Despite the ceasefire, tensions remain high. Since March 15, the US has conducted repeated airstrikes on Houthi-controlled areas to deter further attacks. The situation remains volatile, with implications for regional stability and the ongoing Gaza conflict.

Beating @MarmiteLover123@hexbear.net to this (who will have more details im sure) but Israel has just flattened North Yemen's only civilian airport (Sanaa Intl airport), hitting its departure and arrivals terminals and all civilian airliners present. They also struck Hodeidah again in a massive retaliatory attack.

[-] MarmiteLover123@hexbear.net 57 points 2 months ago* (last edited 2 months ago)

Yes, over 20 airstrikes on the airport, 3 Airbus A-320-200 passenger aircraft destroyed for Yemenia airlines (used price: $25 million each), airport terminal and runways destroyed.

Yesterday the sea port had terminal 5 destroyed and terminals 1-4 badly damaged. It's likely that Israel now completely destroyed terminals 1-4 today.

Multiple concrete factories and power stations also destroyed.

In short, billions of US dollars in damages.

Belize always comes out as the biggest winner whenever shit goes down with its neighbors. They have plenty of issues on their own but their recent rise in tourism money while El Salvador and Guatemala are plagued with entrenched right-wing corruption is a sore spot for the rest of us. They managed to avoid the regime changes that their neighbors had imposed on them and lacked destructive civil wars. Britain did oppose their initial drive for self-rule and the PUP (Soc-Dem party and the ruling party for decades) while still sparing Belize from any real meddling.

Most of their issues today revolve around climate change, mass illegal immigration from its neighbors, Guatemala threatening them, and crime rising. I would recommend foreigners giving it a visit over Guatemala. It’s safer and more open-minded for the most part, though queer culture is still something they can be hostile towards outside of Belize City or Belmopan.
