Long before Guy Bartkus’ personal war against life ended with him the sole suspect in blowing up a fertility clinic, and himself, there was a fascination with pyrotechnics.

TBF he was only active on Lemmy during the month of the 2023 Reddit third-party app exodus.

Hey remember when .world was getting all high and mighty about defederating from Hexbear and Lemmygrad because they might incite violence?

[-] Grapho@lemmy.ml 25 points 2 months ago

Duh, it's not violence when it's against the marginalized.

it's almost like the internet has allowed all kinds of extremists that would otherwise be alone in their extremism find each other in an echo chamber where they're all "obviously correct" and that any action they choose to take is warranted and approved by their extremist community. with 8+ billion people in the world, of course you can find 1000 online that agree with you.

He volunteered that he wanted to kill himself by strapping an explosive to his head, setting the timer for one hour and drugging himself to sleep. He said he lacked access to any drug stronger than codeine. Available explosives were not the problem.

Only in America could this be the case

Anyone want to place bets on how long it is before Elon uses this as an excuse to whisper in Trump's ear that he needs to classify the Fediverse as a terrorist organization? It'd conveniently shut down competition with Xitter (and other billionaire-owned social media sites) if Mastodon (and Lemmy and PeerTube and Diaspora etc) was shut down for "RaDiCaLiZiNg fErTiLiTy ClInIc BoMbErS" or whatever BS.

[-] eldavi@lemmy.ml 22 points 2 months ago

lemmy is not even a blip on anyone's radar and huge majority of its users still primarily use reddit and twitter.

[-] orca@orcas.enjoying.yachts 21 points 2 months ago

I run my own instance. I’d tell Elon to eat a pile of soggy dicks before I shut anything down.

[-] grrgyle@slrpnk.net 9 points 2 months ago

lol nice domain. Also yeah, running an instance is so so easy. Just follow the lemmy-ansible installation instruction and that's pretty much it.

[-] orca@orcas.enjoying.yachts 12 points 2 months ago

It can be a bit expensive, but I’m okay with it if it adds another instance choice for people. Switching over to object storage was an absolute lifesaver.

I never thought I’d own a “.yachts” domain lmao.

I love this 😂

I originally wanted destroying.yachts but that was taken.

[-] grrgyle@slrpnk.net 6 points 2 months ago* (last edited 2 months ago)

A single user instance, expensive? I'm using a hosted VPS with 1 vCPU, 2 Go RAM, 20 Go disque, and that seems like plenty. Although admittedly I'm not federated with many communities, and mostly just play around with my instance as a toy (it's not this instance, ofc).

Oh sry, I just noticed you do host a few users actually. That's cool. Do the system requirements ramp up much?

[-] orca@orcas.enjoying.yachts 3 points 2 months ago

I have quite a bit of disk space from before I moved over to object storage. I can’t size it down so I just roll with it. 4gb of RAM, 70gb disk, 2 Intel vCPUs, then a bucket for object storage (dirt cheap which is nice). I mostly use it for myself and have it federated with a variety of servers and communities. I’ve been in tech for years and like offering it. I also have a Matrix server too but that’s pretty tiny.

I would strongly recommend using a Lemmy/fediverse instance that is not hosted in the US.

For tons of reasons, the fact that it might get shut down by Trump isn't even in the top five.

[-] OmegaLemmy@discuss.online 1 points 2 months ago

fuck. Is discuss.online hosted in US?

[-] BattleMasker@r.nf 5 points 2 months ago

It's an LA Times article. Those kinda guys avoid anything from LA like the plague

Least extreme .world mod.

[-] sleeplessone@lemmy.ml 20 points 2 months ago

Preemptively blowing up a fertility clinic as a last resort.

[-] IndustryStandard@lemmy.world 19 points 2 months ago

Going to be awkward for anyone who wants to take the open mod spot.

[-] Wutchilli@feddit.org 19 points 2 months ago

[-] folaht@lemmy.ml 1 points 2 months ago* (last edited 2 months ago)

Who did?
And how did that cause a clinic bombing?
Are you the culprit?

[-] jeffw@lemmy.world 15 points 2 months ago

I find it interesting that he was removed as a mod 3 days ago and this came out today

[-] Walk_blesseD@lemmy.blahaj.zone 11 points 2 months ago

Is it possible that the admins were asked for comment by the paper?

[-] jeffw@lemmy.world 3 points 2 months ago

That’s my hunch

[-] Zerush@lemmy.ml 10 points 2 months ago

It is unavoidable that in any social net with thousands or million users, can appear also one or several which obviously spread criminal, violent, terroristic and far right messages, because pure statistics. It can not value a social network by these, but how they treat or if they tolerate these users, instead of banning these in the same moment after posts like these.

[-] UnfortunateShort@lemmy.world 10 points 2 months ago

Hey look, one of these anonymous internet people was insane and became a terrorist. Sure casts a bad light on all of you.

[-] desktop_user@lemmy.blahaj.zone 5 points 2 months ago
