Ah yes drugs are bad. Weed kills you, etc.

You find out weed doesn't do any of the shit they said it did... Now absolutely everything they claimed is called into question. Why would they lie about X but not about Y?

DARE did more to make people learn that police cannot be trusted apart from maybe their general violent tendencies.

[-] theUwUhugger@lemmy.world 7 points 2 weeks ago

Also didn’t the cia sell drugs? Maybe it really was an advertisement?

[-] UnderpantsWeevil@lemmy.world 3 points 2 weeks ago

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/CIA_drug_trafficking_allegations

According to Tim Weiner, the Central Intelligence Agency "has been accused of forming alliances of convenience with drug traffickers around the world in the name of anti-Communism" since its creation in 1947.

This was part of a more all-encompassing effort to leverage organized crime syndicates and other black market networks as methods of infiltrating, subverting, and ultimately dissolving Soviet Socialist Republics. Because the drug trade was such a lynchpin of the colonial-era plantation movement, you had a lot of anti-communist sympathizers already forced underground in the face of communist revolutions (which also, incidentally, tended to be anti-drug use).

Armies of Nationalist China fled into Thailand Myanmar, and Cambodia to run heroin operations and only significantly influenced the regimes in the region for decades and today.

DARE should have just told me that pot would just make me really sleepy and make me eat too much... causing an 8 lb weight gain overnight. That would have been enough. They should have avoided telling me anything about speed.

[-] HawlSera@lemm.ee 4 points 2 weeks ago

Weed not actually being dangerous.. when you find that out it's like leaving the Matrix

[-] Kratzkopf@discuss.tchncs.de 6 points 2 weeks ago

I mean, I would have appreciated some information about weed influencing my body and brain development before I am ~25. Then I might have waited that time or smoked less. Now I can only imagine if I might have become less of a scatterbrain. Instead I was told that all drugs are bad and they will make me addicted and push me to drug-related crimes, which did not turn out believable enough.

[-] explodicle@sh.itjust.works 7 points 2 weeks ago

Are you sure you're not a scatterbrain from undiagnosed ADHD that you've been self-medicating with the weed?

[-] lucelu2@lemm.ee 4 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago)

I definitely had/have undiagnosed something but I don't blame the drugs... those came after my lived experience being socially awkward, rocking to soothe myself and mostly daydreaming all day and forgetting homework existed. I can't imagine what my mother was thinking trying to comb out my rats nest hair in the morning. No wonder she had it cut really short.

I may be too european, but our one prez was about hard drugs! Half of it was about was a biology lesson about the nucleus accumbens and its deterioration! The other half was safety tips, apparently you can try every hard drug once with exemption to crystal meth without causing permanent damage! I didn’t know that until then, I would have probably never tried morphine once if not for that lesson…

They taught us that drugs were evil and done by bad people. The first time I smoked pot, I realized I was lied to and wondered what other drugs were like.

They showed us a video like

Acid makes you see sounds and taste colors, and isn't addictive... But don't do it!

Before the video I absolutely had no desire to try acid, and after the video all I could think was like "what does a color taste like?!?!"

[-] TriflingToad@sh.itjust.works 3 points 2 weeks ago
[-] Apocalypteroid@lemmy.world 14 points 2 weeks ago

Psychonaut with a couple of decades experience here: Acid can be excellent fun. For many years it was my favourite intoxicant. It definitely has a dark side to it tho.

If you are taking acid for the first time then you should do it with good friends and ideally have either a tripsitter (a sober friend who can help if things start to get a bit overwhelming) or someone who has taken it a few times before.

Do it in a safe space where you feel comfortable and is available for your use for the duration of the trip.

Be prepared for the long haul. A typical acid trip lasts around 8 hours and once you've dropped, there's no going back.

Have a playlist of music that makes you happy, and have your favourite feel-good movie on hand.

If you are feeling anxious or depressed DO NOT DO IT. Acid does not make you feel good like ecstasy or mdma or 2cb. If you are feeling shit it will make you feel 10x worse but if you are in a good place, with good friends, then it is amazing.

Thank you for listening to my head talk.

"Studies published in the 1990s concluded that D.A.R.E. had little to no effectiveness in preventing drug use in elementary, middle, or high school students, and may actually lead to increased drug use." https://www.britannica.com/procon/DARE-Drug-Abuse-Resistance-Education-debate

I found one that says "Dispensaries Are Really Expensive"

I also live in a waspy town and several people have noticed the DARE letters, struck up a conversation about how great the program was and we should bring it back, etc. Then they actually read it and get all huffy. Best $24.99 I ever spent.

That program was started at around the same time that the US government flooded the country with Crack Cocaine to fund their illegal wars in Central America

If any one is wondering .... you should look up the story of Gary Webb

EDIT: .... and if anyone is paying attention ... the story that Webb uncovered basically ruined his life because the government hounded him like a dog until he lost everything. Even then, he still kept fighting, resisting and writing about all the terrible things the government was doing.

Then at the height of all the news about all this ... he died by suicide ... from two gunshot wounds to the head! ... and people tell me to stop believing in conspiracy theories. How the hell do you shoot yourself in the head twice to kill yourself.

A simplified retelling of this story is in the film 'Kill the Messenger' (2014) which stars Jeremy Renner

[-] inkrifle@lemmy.world 4 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago)

Important clarification:

Webb, an investigative journalist for the San Jose Mercury News, uncovered convincing evidence that proceeds from international cocaine trafficking represented a major source of funding for US-backed right-wing death squads in Nicaragua (known as the Contras) with South Central Los Angeles and other urban African American communities serving as key markets for the drug; and more distressing, that the CIA had become aware of this illicit commerce early on and incorporated it into a broader domestic strategy, allowing the cocaine pipeline to continue and thrive to a massive degree that eventually gave rise to the U.S. "crack epidemic" of the '80s and '90s and the birth of the prison-industrial sector.

Webb DID NOT break the story of America's crack coming from the Contras with the CIA's approval. That fact had already been available around the time it occurred. Webb's contribution was gathering and sharing the details and more evidence. To be fair, Webb never claimed to have any evidence that the CIA engineered the whole thing, only that they knew it was going on, approved of it, and even met with Contra leaders and funders to discuss it.

Webb's downfall as a journalist is mainly due to his making unsupported claims. If he had had evidence for all of his claims, it would not have made him vulnerable to being discredited. For example, the US Justice Department found that "the allegations contained in the original Mercury News articles were exaggerations of the actual facts," and that "the claims that Blandón and Meneses were responsible for introducing crack cocaine into South Central Los Angeles and spreading the crack epidemic throughout the country were unsupported." Even Nick Schou, Webb's biographer, agreed that, "the story offered no evidence to support such sweeping conclusions, a fatal error that would ultimately destroy Webb, if not his editors."

On December 10, 2004, Gary Webb took his own life. It is true that there were two bullet wounds in his head, which has raised suspicions that his death might not have been a suicide. However, no evidence has yet been presented contradicting the coroner's findings, so we have to accept it as such for now.

And yes, Kill the Messenger (2014) is worth watching. It is a surprisingly accurate film starring Jeremy Renner. It portrays how Webb assembled the story and depicts the media's tomfoolery and its impact on Webb's life. Even Webb's own son liked it.

I fundamentally disagree with the premise of this statement and you should also.

"What we are being told happened here is completely impossible, but no one has presented anything more plausible, so we must accept this as truth and move on."

Absolutely not. Bullshit. Fuck that. You should be ashamed of yourself for even writing that in public. You're being lied to, right to your face, boldly and unashamedly, to rug-sweep a set of extremely illegal governmental actions without any sort of culpability - and your response to this is "Well, better not worry about that then!"

How could you possibly think that's the correct response to that?

Bit late to do something about it now, we missed that bus, but I can draw a straight line from Ronald Reagan to Contra to this to the fascist hellhole of an American society that find ourselves in in the current day. If anyone had held their government responsible for anything it has done at any point in time, we might have shifted that path just a little.

[-] CarbonatedPastaSauce@lemmy.world 6 points 2 weeks ago

Bullseye. Anyone swallowing the official story about Webb is naive at best. I mean what the fuck "It's impossible so we must accept it as truth?", again what the actual fuck? How does someone think like this?

In Canada back in the day cops would come into the classroom. They had big boards with all the drugs attached. More than a few times, they disappeared off the board.

[-] DeathbringerThoctar@lemmy.world 6 points 2 weeks ago

I remember a constable coming to class with one of these and commenting that I had excellent veins should I ever do IV drugs. They 100% set us up to fail.

[-] lucelu2@lemm.ee 6 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago)

I did drugs before DARE. So, we knew they were full of shit. However it was the late 70s so we had legit caution about drugs that were administered with needles so avoided those... Then the cocaine era happened.

[-] Dozzi92@lemmy.world 5 points 2 weeks ago

I remember learning about acid. If you do acid, you will freak out and stab a pencil through your eye.

[-] emeralddawn45@discuss.tchncs.de 6 points 2 weeks ago

I have a DARE shirt that says 'Drugs Are Really Expensive' underneath and i feel like thats a more effective deterrent than anything they said in the program.

[-] borglore@lemm.ee 5 points 2 weeks ago

My dad would change the wording of Dare Tshirts with tipp-ex so that "dare to say no to drugs" would instead say "dare to say hi to roger" (in swedish) 😂

[-] Yeller_king@reddthat.com 4 points 2 weeks ago

In middle school, my health class was all about how in high school, there'd be all these crazy sex and drug fueled parties and one day I turned to my friend and said "I cannot wait for high school".

[-] dohpaz42@lemmy.world 3 points 2 weeks ago

As an 80s kid who endured DARE since – what 1988? – I wanted to let everyone know that I read this post and comments while being high.

Ah, yes, the ~~massively~~ ~~mostly~~ ~~kind of~~ not really at all successful D.A.R.E. Program.

[-] bhamlin@lemmy.world 5 points 2 weeks ago

It was successful at grabbing my interest. "Drugs Are Really Expensive" would have been a far better message.

[-] Resol@lemmy.world 3 points 2 weeks ago

Here's how you do drugs, but PLEASE DON'T DO DRUGS. But here's how anyway.

Like, if you're gonna tell me not to do something, why give me instructions on how to do said thing?

What I always found funny later in life was they never said anything about DMT. It was like they didn't want us to be aware of DMT existing, even though it was discovered in the 30s, found naturally in the 40s, known hallucinogenic for hundreds or thousands of years, but only studied as a hallucinogen in the 50s.

DMT is a glorious hallucinogen that any psychonaut should pursue, it is easier to obtain than LSD and profoundly better with shorter lasting effects than LSD or mushrooms. You got an hour to spend and are willing to shatter reality? DMT can change your mind.

[-] PP_BOY_@lemmy.world 3 points 2 weeks ago

Whaaaaat? You mean to tell me that the guys whose entire existence is justified by locking up poor people for drug use, whose "justice system" is just a front for legal slavery, ran an "anti" drug campaign that maybe wasn't super good? Almost like that was... the whole point?
