Hey everyone

We’re really sorry to say this, but lemm.ee will be shutting down on June 30, 2025.

What you need to know

As of now:

  • New user registrations are disabled
  • Creating new communities is disabled

What you should do:

  • You can export your settings at https://lemm.ee/settings to take them with you to another instance.
  • If you're moving to another instance, consider adding a note to your lemm.ee profile with your new username. Your old profile will still be visible from other instances even after we go offline.
  • Alternatively, if you want to delete your lemm.ee profile, now is the best time to do it, so the deletion can federate out before we go offline.
  • If you're one of the folks supporting us with a recurring donation, please remember to cancel it (Ko-Fi donations should have been cancelled automatically already). Our leftover funds are already enough to cover our bills for next month, so we can keep things running without any more support.

Because of how Lemmy is built, everything posted on lemm.ee will still be accessible from other instances, even after we go offline.

Why this is happening

The key reason is that we just don’t have enough people on the admin team to keep the place running. Most of the admin team has stepped down, mostly due to burnout, and finding replacements hasn’t worked out.

The sad reality is that while there are a lot of great people on Lemmy, there are also some who use the platform to attack others, stir up conflict, or actively try to undermine the project. Admins are volunteers who deal with the latter group on a constant basis, this takes a mental toll. Please understand why our admins chose to step down, and be kind to the admins on whatever instance you decide to join.

We know this sucks. We're genuinely sorry it’s ending like this. Thank you to everyone who spent time here and helped make it better.

Thanks to everyone who was active here, it was a really good mix of casual discussion and more in-depth reviews. I found quite a few new films to watch based on what you guys were recommending in the weekly threads.

Piefed is probably going to be the one. I'll organize a vote in the coming days.

Thank you, Blaze.

To everyone else here, it's been an honor to be a part of this community.

Hey @TheImpressiveX@lemm.ee, do you have Matrix? If yes, feel free to DM me at @blaze:tchncs.de, it will be easier to discuss where to migrate the community

Hello Scrubbles,

Don't worry, if there's someone that's ready for an instance shutting down, that's me and my alts x)

Thanks, I might! Feel free to also comment on !fedigrow@lemm.ee, we still have the regular weekly threads

A lot of people have ml blocked. World shouldn't have everything on it. Seems like pieces could be a decent alternative.

yea losing lemm.ee really sucks, hopefully we take this chance to spread out a bit better, maybe build some fedia.io and piefed.social communities

I love mbin and fedia, but fedia is the only large mbin instance and it's been a bit flaky lately. Not sure if that's an mbin problem or just a fedia problem. Up until a month or so ago they used to be great, but I wouldn't recommend them at this moment.

By the way, @Die4Ever@retrolemmy.com , I know you are trying to help, but maybe let the mods handle the announcements for other communities?

It will be easier for us to manage the migration to a new community rather than point people to LW and .ml communities.

For choosing a new community, yeah, but the mods and users may not even know that the instance is going down. I've put a post in the lemm.ee communities that I subscribe to that haven't already had the mods or someone else post something about the instance going down.

EDIT: Honestly, it'd kind of be better if there were some sort of protocol-level way for an instance to announce that it was going offline in N days, because this isn't going to be the last time this happens, and I believe what a user on another home instance is going to see if nothing happens---based on what I saw when kbin.social went dark---is the community appearing to just be inactive. It's not very clear that the instance is dead from that, especially since a lot of communities don't see all that much traffic in the first place.

That's sad to hear. I most enjoyed the weekly movie thread where I could write review snippets and peruse (and find) new movies to add to the list.

[-] Blaze@lemmy.dbzer0.com 3 points 2 days ago

Don't worry, we'll have those in the new community as well
