It was Oppa Gangnam style all the time, the whole time. 
It's interesting watching media reference to Korea from the 60s to the 80s, they very, very rarely do, but when they do, the north isn't even mentioned and the south is full of depictions like how the west portrays the north today.
It's kind of like how Saudi Arabia is seen by the west today, a "ally" that constantly commits human rights violations, but those are just "unfortunately how things are" rather than how they react when that stuff happens in Bad Guy Country.

It’s also very difficult to explain to outsiders how fucked up the gender inequality situation in South Korea is.
South Korean women are expected to work full time career jobs for just as many hours as the men, then come home and do all the shopping, meal planning, cook home cooked meals every night, preparing the whole family’s lunch bags, wake up early to prepare breakfast, do all child raising, diaper changes, baby feeding, cleaning, household finance management, manage the kid’s extracurriculars and hagwon, laundry, maintain a beautiful figure and hairstyle and skin…
Like, average Korean men without exaggeration just go to work, come home, and get drunk and watch TV without lifting a single finger not even bothering to wipe their pubes and piss off the toilet while the dutiful wife takes care of literally everything while also having a career.
The girlies have started to say “nah” to this and the men are fucking seething. like, hundreds of thousands of people in minor deepfake CSAM Kakao groups seething. And then they dare to say “oh it’s a gender war, both sides are bad!”.
seems like we truly reached the deepest point in the pit of inhumanity with this wretched county. i don't even know what "kakao groups" are and i do not dare to look it up. 
Yeah and it’s also reasonable to say “all Western men” to this, but it’s just different in South Korea. Like, women must cook bomb-ass home cooked Korean meals every breakfast, lunch, and dinner. They must give 100% effort in cleaning and homemaking. To do otherwise is unthinkable.
You end up with these fucking incredible kind and intelligent women who dedicate so much effort to the household stuck together with absolute slobs of partners that don’t give a shit because all that is the norm.
It’s a deeply sick society and the ultimate speed run of capitalism, from Korean War rubble to capitalist utopia to complete sociological and demographic collapse in 70 years. One lifetime.
