tbf I didn't have summer of love 2 popping off anytime soon on my bingo card, I thought we were stuck with brunch libs sipping mimosas and being epic with $50 "protest" signs.

[-] Z_Poster365@hexbear.net 38 points 2 weeks ago

Trump summers just gonna be like this

[-] spectre@hexbear.net 29 points 2 weeks ago

I think that assumption was pretty misguided. Biden obviously didn't work to solve anything (including the baseline "at least it's not trump", cause here we are) and most liberals under the age of 50 are not Twitter Democrat supporters (something else that gets lost in online spaces).

[-] stink@lemmygrad.ml 18 points 2 weeks ago

The hands off protest really ruined my hope, so many lib signs, this is revitalizing me

[-] ClathrateG@hexbear.net 17 points 2 weeks ago

summer of love 2

umm actually the second summer of love was the 88-89 acid house rave scene in the UK, this would be the third

[-] BoxedFenders@hexbear.net 13 points 2 weeks ago

Reminds me more of the Summer of '69, of which the Summer of Floyd was its second coming.

[-] TheSpectreOfGay@hexbear.net 49 points 2 weeks ago

the contrast between the blue on the police car and the fire is great color theory. this is a piece of art

[-] 30_to_50_Feral_PAWGs@hexbear.net 50 points 2 weeks ago

I think that's just a Waymo. They were calling them in to where the cops were entrenched and lighting them on fire for the last bit of the drive.

[-] Z_Poster365@hexbear.net 32 points 2 weeks ago

Whoever used their phone to call in the cars on the app is gonna be in big doodoo though

[-] Awoo@hexbear.net 22 points 2 weeks ago

Good luck proving intent lol

[-] trinicorn@hexbear.net 16 points 2 weeks ago

yeah assuming it wasn't super obviously coordinated, all hailed by one person, etc. this is true (and it'd be bad PR to go after them if it wasn't an airtight case). fucking hasan hailed an uber or whatever like 2 blocks from the protest to go home, live on stream, the waymos were hailed early enough in the protest to be very plausibly deniable

[-] WizardOfLoneliness@hexbear.net 25 points 2 weeks ago

Oh so they were using them as weapons? I kept thinking it was kinda dumb to just be destroying cars for no reason

[-] Robert_Kennedy_Jr@hexbear.net 28 points 2 weeks ago

The Waymos were being used to send camera footage of the protests to the pigs.

[-] WizardOfLoneliness@hexbear.net 13 points 2 weeks ago

But the protesters were calling them though

I've been wondering that myself lol. So random. I heard it's because they share data with cops, but I don't know how many people on the ground actually know that.

I have a feeling it's just an easy way to get a burning car in the road to cause disruptions, because you can easily call them over.

[-] UltraGreen@hexbear.net 41 points 2 weeks ago

It's because the waymos would drive themselves in front of the line of cops, protestors would light them on fire, creating a flaming wall where the cops would not cross.

It's frankly genius. And should be used in any city with waymos.

[-] trinicorn@hexbear.net 32 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago)

I heard it's because they share data with cops, but I don't know how many people on the ground actually know that.

People said this about the burning and looted Target stores in Minneapolis in 2020. It wasn't true, a lot of people on the ground absolutely knew about many of their horrible practices, and even those who didn't know the specifics correctly idenitified big corporations and big tech as being big drivers/boosters of police repression and surveillance.

More generalized looting is also a thing (and I have no interest in condemning it) but there's a reason Target went first and was targeted across neighborhoods even far from the action.

[-] LeninsBeard@hexbear.net 16 points 2 weeks ago

That specific Target (the first one) was well known as a testing ground for new surveillance techniques

Heros are made, not born.

[-] Bronstein_Tardigrade@lemmygrad.ml 8 points 2 weeks ago

If Musk wants to rehab his image, he should donate all his unsold cybertrucks to the protest as anti-pig barriers.

[-] MetalMachine@feddit.nl 7 points 2 weeks ago

Ok but in all seriousness what does breaking waymo cars get you?

[-] ShimmeringKoi@hexbear.net 17 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago)

Besides catharsis against the omnipresent surveillance state, it gets you fewer police-accessible mobile cameras (making other actions safer) and a greater reluctance on the part of companies to continue investing in this. It's also funny and good pr, because people hate these things

Safer roads

[-] hello_hello@hexbear.net 7 points 2 weeks ago

The US government is a failing and failed system. Un-ironically hurting an oligarch like Google's bottom line would do more for influencing govt. policy.

In the USA, a corporation losing potential profits is the closest we'll get to a peoples democracy like China that doesn't have these issues by actually being democratic.
