Apologies for being pessimistic but it's not gonna matter at all. It might even be worse if he does win. Half the Democrats are already planning independent runs. The other half will do everything in their power to sabotage his run from inside the party. If he does win the primary then the whole New York Democratic apparatus is going to withhold its support for him and will quietly support Cuomo.

If he somehow manages to win in the general election despite this then the whole bureaucracy will just cease to cooperate with him and ever single issue will be blamed on him. The papers will say "The People's Republic of NYC, another failure of socialism". He's an AOC/old school DSA guy which means he's unlikely to have the guts to seize and wield power the way he would need to because the norms are too important.

This is the problem with the DSA program that they actually carry out. They are able to build electoral machines that win elections but they're toothless at the end of the day. When they get into office they are simply not compatible with the bourgeois state as it exists and the actual power brokers in the DSA are unwilling to smash any part of the capitalist state with mass action.

Edit: if I were to offer a solution rather than just a criticism I would say after the primary he should run for mayor regardless of whether or not he wins and he should spend the entire campaign explaining to New Yorkers that if they want things like universal childcare, free busses, and rent freezes then they need to make the system untenable until they are won. He needs to explain to them very explicitly that no politician can or will deliver on those things and all the forces of the state are aligned against them.

We want Zohran to win so that when the system crushes his reforms his media savviness can be leveraged to radicalize the populace

AOC and Sanders are utter media illiterates and too absorbed by the DC bubble, Zohran doesn't have those twin weaknesses, the dude knows media and how to make it

"The People's Republic of NYC, another failure of socialism"

This is exactly the polarized response we want to generate and this time we'll have a New York City mayor of all things, capable of counter propaganda at a time when the pendulum is swinging back against the far-right

[-] hotcouchguy@hexbear.net 18 points 2 days ago

Yes, but I think people can only learn that lesson the hard way. It's part of the historical process.

It might even be worse if he does win.

Yeah I'm at the point now I don't even root for socialists in these petty local elections. Feels like every time we win we just get blamed for every single fucking problem the locale had, even if it was shit that was going on/worse under the previous establishment Dem. Our enemies propaganda machine is too damn strong for us to have any mainstream victory.

While I agree with the sentiment, I think we're going to get blamed regardless of whether we're in power. Might as well have some decision making power while it happens. I think part of it is that we need candidates who are willing to push back hard against the narratives . drop the high road shit and step into the pit.

That is also what i see happening if he wins. And honestly, i dont even know if he could do much as mayor even if he tried. The system is corrupt as fuck, theres no reforming it

[-] DragonBallZinn@hexbear.net 41 points 2 days ago

You WILL see articles from the NYT called “The progressive case to vote Republican.” or something like that.

[-] porcupine@lemmygrad.ml 17 points 2 days ago

“Democracy Needs a Strong Republican Party That Can Stand Up to Trump”

[-] regul@hexbear.net 66 points 2 days ago

Look at you, having hope that things will improve.

Good for you, champ.

[-] spectre@hexbear.net 35 points 2 days ago

This, but unironically

[-] CyborgMarx@hexbear.net 30 points 2 days ago

lmao the US historically is still barreling toward collapse

BUT Zohran Mandani WILL win the mayoral race for New York City in the year 2025

[-] DragonBallZinn@hexbear.net 14 points 2 days ago

Zohran for Prime Minister of the people’s Republic of Laurentia established in 2027 pls.

wrong

good things do not happen in america

[-] Beaver@hexbear.net 29 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago)

I think he's gonna do it. Momentum is a real thing in electoralism and the polling is so close.

Be prepared for the most insufferable media coverage imaginable. If Cuomo wins, there will be an establishment victory lap talking about how the steady center is the way forward followed by zero critical coverage of how he actually governs. If Zohran wins... well, you can imagine. We joke about how leftists always infight, but it's going to be nothing compared to how liberal media will punch left against him.

[-] CyborgMarx@hexbear.net 59 points 2 days ago

Also FUCK Bernie Sanders, that piece of shit should've had two rallies in New York by now elevating Zohran's image

[-] CoolerOpposide@hexbear.net 21 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago)

The ratfuck is already in motion. Cuomo has already committed to running as an independent in the general if he loses the primary. You know that when it comes down to it, the Dem establishment will throw their support behind him instead of the Democratic nominee

[-] CyborgMarx@hexbear.net 12 points 2 days ago

Doesn't matter, if Cuomo loses the primary he'll be obliterated by general voters, also Adams will drag him down

All that's required to win New York is name recognition and the Dem vote

Zohran has 2/2 - Cuomo has 1 and it's negatively polarized, dems fucked up with Cuomo

Zohran is a lucky bastard, he's gonna win

[-] CleverOleg@hexbear.net 14 points 2 days ago

Dude was on TV and advocated for the one-state solution, he’s golden in my book.

[-] KnownUnknownKnower@hexbear.net 3 points 2 days ago

He did? I thought he was a two stater

[-] spectre@hexbear.net 11 points 2 days ago

He did it in a liberal friendly way of "I think Israel has a right to exist as a state that has equal rights for all people living inside it.", so it's been a little controversial, but I think it's perfectly fine for his purposes.

[-] GrouchyGrouse@hexbear.net 7 points 1 day ago

It's not a bad line at all. It puts the onus on Israelis to explain why equal rights is bad

[-] spectre@hexbear.net 3 points 1 day ago

Yeah I kinda dgaf if they are called Israel or even if they have a star of David on the flag if they deliver liberation to their citizens (they won't, but if they did)

[-] CleverOleg@hexbear.net 3 points 1 day ago

I think that is an excellent way to explain the one-state solution to people who have never heard it before. Americans are so ingrained into the idea of “ethnostates good”, I think a lot of finesse is needed when introducing these ideas to libs who are open but ignorant.

[-] Carl@hexbear.net 24 points 2 days ago

Do I dare to dream that somewhere in America something good will happen?

[-] FugaziArchivist@hexbear.net 16 points 2 days ago

What's going on with personal identity and the optics of socialism? By that I mean: Zohran is crushing it with college-educated white men, according to the polls. Meanwhile, Establishment Dem Cuomo has won majority support from women, people of color, and old folks. I know socialism is rarified and academic, so for that reason it has a white stigma. I don't live in NY, but I wonder what DSA is doing to reverse that. Any other explanations for why the polls are shaking out this way? How are women supporting Cuomo despite his sexual harassment resignation, or old people after the 2020 nursing home scandal? Or is it as simple as Dem propaganda, powerful business interests, media bias, etc.

[-] CyborgMarx@hexbear.net 17 points 2 days ago

Name recognition and endemic cynicism are the main drivers, normies do not believe the promises of progressive liberals and for good reason

Thankfully Zohran's campaign has successfully broken through those barriers in a similar way to AOC back in 2018, and the dems helped him by trying to rehabilitate an unpopular creep like Cuomo, also the bizarre Zionist cult displays during the debate went viral and creeped out alot of New Yorkers

[-] DragonBallZinn@hexbear.net 5 points 2 days ago

endemic cynicism

Second this, cynicism is weaponized as a tool for conformity so much its unreal.

[-] lemmyseizethemeans@lemmygrad.ml 25 points 2 days ago

Don't do that don't give me hope

[-] Mindfury@hexbear.net 23 points 2 days ago

Here's how Zohran can still win

[-] SexUnderSocialism@hexbear.net 15 points 2 days ago

Watch them find a way to ratfuck him at the last minute because nothing good is allowed to happen in the United Pits of Hell. fire

[-] Moss@hexbear.net 11 points 2 days ago
[-] CyborgMarx@hexbear.net 9 points 2 days ago

More like summer 2018, Zohran has successfully pulled off an AOC
