Anon fell for the classic blunder and got jebaited
Recover them from the trash folder.
Maybe also use a password in the future
How do you put a password on a folder?
Encrypted zip
Doesn't prevent deletion though
Need ACL for that
Put it on a second user account. Personally I have all my stuff like documents and pictures on a removable usb drive that I unplug when I'm not using my pc.
Just a friendly reminder: thumb drives kinda' suck as reliable storage. Especially ones that get carried around a lot. I've had soo many thumbdrives, from many different brands, of many different supposed qualities, all stop working mysteriously some day. Some not even more than a few months old.
All that is to say... make sure they're backed up somewhere else that's not also a thumb drive!
Yeah thanks its a good reminder. I make sure to follow the rule of 3 for anything important, primary source, local backup, remote backup.
What about the good ol "school" or "learning" folder?
Fake: OP uploaded a Pepe with the post, so his Pepes are not gone.
Gay: He’s more interested in a male frog than in a girlfriend.
Fake: she knows what pepes/shitposting are ("you don't need these")
Take the opportunity to grow up and leave a bad habit behind. Then find a new girlfriend who will respect your boundaries and won’t fuck with your computer.
Yea, Windows has had (real) separate user logins since XP (well, NT3.51,but no consumer used that).
No one gets my password, I'll create a separate account for you.
This is Lemmy, you find that anon and tell them they need to be using GNU/Linux!
You'll be too busy deleting bloat from your Arch installation to have time for a girlfriend. Problem solved.
or time for shitposting, so yet another problem solved!
Or as I've recently taken to calling it, GNU plus Linux!
NT 4.0 and Windows 2000 both had real logins, and they both had workstation versions.
And this is why you need a 3-2-1 backup strategy.
Real talk, if you want the actual data recovery perspective
If your system is on an SSD, first thing is you've got about 10 minutes (or less) to shutdown and use a recovery program before TRIM comes and irrecoverably deletes it. (Not applicable to all systems, some have slower TRIM timing, some faster, some instant and some not enabled at all (Sounds preposterous now, but it was an issue for a hot minute, so old systems might still be affected))
If HDD, just don't start writing to disk a bunch of shit and you can grab a cup of coffee before shutting down
From there, you need to remove the disk and have an adapter for it to USB or another system DURING ANY DATA RECOVERY, ALWAYS WORK FROM AN IMAGE, NOT THE DRIVE ITSELF (Especially for "iffy" drives (If you know that it is damaged in some way, or you just can't afford it and won't soon, please get with a professional service. With data recovery from potentially damaged drives, you might get one shot to get a good image and it's done for).
Once you have your image, there's a bunch of different recovery software you can use. My personal favorite and go-to is R-Studio. It's well worth the $50, but you can sail the high seas for it as well. But you'll need to take some time to get used to it, it's not...the most user friendly out there lmao.
If you need something user friendly, try Recuva or Disk Drill. Just do NOT waste your money with shovelware like anything made by Wondershare.
I'm glad you were here to fulfill the Lemmy tech comment expectations so I didn't have to
Additional comments:
- Some HDDs also have TRIM, albeit rarely. CrystalDiskInfo will list it if it does.
- R-Photo is free from what I've seen, and would work well in this situation due to the folder just consisting of photos.
- AFAIK Disk Drill is free up to 500mb recovered
Alternatively, if you follow good backup practices, just grab the pepe folder from your latest backup. Nobody ever seems to do that though, at least until they experience their first major data loss.
dont professional data recovery services cost a few grand? I have had a hard drive I've wanted to recover for over a decade
Have a look for a local one, you'll probably have an upfront cost for analysis, but they should be able to give you a cost estimate after they look at it. Good ones will always give you the opportunity to say no and stop trying, either due to cost or if you want it back.
I would think you can get the analysis for less than 150 USD or equivalent.
That said, if it was grinding or screaming when you turned it on, the data is probably already gone.
oh, yeah. it's a mechanical issue with mine. this thing started clicking while plugged in, so i stopped using it. that was around 10 yrs ago. i think i stopped using it when it was still functional but it's been so long.
This is not a real interaction. Dude is basically saying "hey guys, imagine if I got a girlfriend, and she found out im a 4chan shirposter... that'd be sweet... no wait I did get a girlfriend... Envy me nerds!"
Wait, so it's fake?
Damn, that's so gay
Nothing gets past you
