Stremio is not FOSS (lemmy.dbzer0.com)

Do you guys not have a problem with Stremio not being completely open source? It seems like it is proprietary, yet I would argue that it is currently the best way to stream movies and tv shows if you know which add-ons to use.

'Open source' misses the point of libre software.

Why is it the best way? I haven't tried it.

It's extremely easy and convenient to use. And it has pretty much everything.

Its a very popular way to access pirated material via debrid services.

Its not really anything special outside of that use case, which really doesn't have anything to do with privacy.

Anything that is closed source I'm concerned of for my own privacy

What part of it isn't FOSS? Isn't the source available on github?

I would be much more concerned with the sources users attach to it, such as real debrid, then I am with Stremio. Not that I would connect any sort of PII to either.

The actual desktop application isn't FOSS. The Web UI is though

With the advent of https://community-scripts.github.io/ProxmoxVE/

Never has it been more easier to set up your own media server with Jellyfin, Emby or Plex and stream your content that way.

[-] sadkiteman@lemmy.dbzer0.com 9 points 1 day ago

Plex isn't open source either

Emby was but not anymore (for a few years). Only jellyfin is open source

[-] slackness@lemmy.ml 2 points 7 hours ago

Yeah Jellyfin was forked from Emby's last open release IIRC.
