this is unironically my plan for tomorrow night.

Im allergic to shellfish and I discovered imitation crab from a meme (fittingly on Lemmy) which is only like 5% actual crab.

However, my allergy started as a kid and just got worse and worse till I eventually couldn't eat it at all anymore, it's been like 5 years.

Since we don't know if the allergy got to deadly levels in that time, I have to be around an epi-pen when I eat it.
My brother in law has one, so I'm going to his house after work.

I'll keep you updated 🫡

Maybe... don't take the risk? If you wanna know how allergic you are, there are tests for that.

Don't play with fire, friend. Fake crab isn't worth dying for.

Updated 4 hours ago. RIP you shellfish weirdo

[-] alphapuggle@programming.dev 3 points 4 weeks ago

Haha I saw that post and your comment on it, lemmy really is a small world

[-] Lemminary@lemmy.world 3 points 4 weeks ago

I'm probably wrong, but maybe microdosing could help you not die from 5% crab. But you gotta do it with a doctor, and it can be expensive. On the upside, you could get so sick of eating crab that you won't need to worry about your allergy again.

[-] MeaanBeaan@lemmy.world 2 points 4 weeks ago

Wait. There's crab in immitation crab meat? I though it was just some variety of white fish or something.

[-] AnyOldName3@lemmy.world 2 points 4 weeks ago

That way they can sell it as Crab Product rather than the much less appetising Crab Flavour Fish Product.

Have you considered immune tolerance therapy for your allergies or does it not apply in your case?

Flat-out lacking evidence & ignoring immunology, shitty guidelines in the UK & US to avoid exposure pretty much proliferated severe allergies uncommon elsewhere in the world. The peanut allergy study is only one example. For some allergies, there are therapies to safely reintroduce exposure & rebuild tolerance.

[-] surewhynotlem@lemmy.world 1 points 4 weeks ago

Allergists can work magic now with micro dosing. My kid's peanut allergy is just gone.

If you have the means and the desire, it's called LDA (low dose allergen) therapy. It's sometimes also called SLIT (sub-lingual immuno therapy). There's probably differences. I'm not a doctor.

I'm allergic to cucumbers and even if I just touch the flesh of a cucumber to my lips, my lips well up. I'm not sure how much less dosage I could give myself.

Also it's cucumber so who the hell cares anyway.

It's always the drummer...

Signed,
the bassist.

As a former band kid, as well as a former roadie for a local band, I concur.

After those experiences, I totally understand why the drummer for the Muppets band is Animal. That chaotic beast basically embodies the spirit of drumming.

Funny but I dunno if I buy it tbh, using an EpiPen alone is a medical emergency requiring medical attention. It's not something you can just shake off.

[-] Cethin@lemmy.zip 2 points 4 weeks ago

Yeah, it keeps you breathing until you can get help hopefully. I don't have allergies, though my dad does and carries and epi pen, but I don't think I'd trust my body to just get over it by the time the epinephrine wears off.

[-] Waldelfe@feddit.org 1 points 4 weeks ago

Also I read somewhere that an EpiPen works in like 95% of cases. There is a small but existing chance that it won't work and you just die from anaphylaxis.

[-] otter@lemmy.dbzer0.com 1 points 3 weeks ago

Sounds like someone's outta practice.

[-] SatansMaggotyCumFart@lemmy.world 1 points 4 weeks ago

Obviously after the first couple times he would build up a tolerance.

[-] eth0slash0@sh.itjust.works 2 points 4 weeks ago

Two epi pens?

[-] frezik@midwest.social 1 points 4 weeks ago

If you start taking small bullets to the head, you can build up a tolerance to taking larger bullets to the head.

[-] otter@lemmy.dbzer0.com 1 points 3 weeks ago

It's why you always always spin the chamber going up against a saurian when lead is on the line.

[-] ComicalMayhem@lemmy.world 1 points 4 weeks ago

is this true /k/ommandos?

[-] dohpaz42@lemmy.world 7 points 4 weeks ago

Dude must be rolling in dough. Those pens aren’t cheap.

[-] A_cook_not_a_chef@lemmy.world 11 points 4 weeks ago

They used to be about $100 for a two pack. Not cheap, but not as outrageous as now.

[-] Cethin@lemmy.zip 5 points 4 weeks ago

IIRC there's also generics that are significantly cheaper. They don't have the same applicator though, so insurance usually doesn't cover them.

It's really sad that this web site had to exist.

Fuck capitalism.

[-] Soapbox@lemmy.zip 5 points 4 weeks ago

One of my best friends has a mild shellfish allergy. He swells up and turns red, but it's not bad enough to require an EpiPen. On multiple occasions, I have seen him go nuts at a shellfish buffet until he balloons up and looks like a tomato, then he pops a Benadryl and sleeps it off.

Personally, I hate shellfish. Especially the smell of it. So I lie to people and tell them I am allergic, so they shut the fuck up about getting me to try it.

[-] PetteriSkaffari@lemmy.world 2 points 4 weeks ago

Shellfish are quite happy you hate them and leave them be.

[-] Lucidlethargy@sh.itjust.works 3 points 4 weeks ago

King... Of the idiots?

Wait, was his name Donald?

[-] PrettyFlyForAFatGuy@feddit.uk 2 points 3 weeks ago

My ex housemate used to be allergic to dairy, not deathly though.

He'd still eat a full pizza every friday to himself, then spend a few hours throwing up in the toilet.

Was worth it apparently

[-] t_berium@lemmy.world 2 points 4 weeks ago

'Okay, let's see, how much this bullet is going to hurt...'

[-] debil@lemmy.world 2 points 4 weeks ago

king

This is one of those "bacon tho" things that combine human selfishness with animal cruelty and top it off with Darwin award level of stupidity.

[-] ZombiFrancis@sh.itjust.works 1 points 4 weeks ago

I farmed shellfish for six years. I do not eat shellfish. I mean, more power to you, but at least cook the little shits, for everyone's sake.

[-] Aggravationstation@feddit.uk 1 points 4 weeks ago

My Dad is allergic to shellfish. I'm not but hadn't eaten any in years when I had a shellfish pasta dish a few months ago and felt high for hours after.
