I saw a really great comment/take on a thread for the movie that pointed out: if DC had balls they would really contrast Superman's experience as an Immigrant with the black coded and/or presenting Martian Manhunter. Superman is white, conventionally attractive, and fully assimilates which leads to his story being emblematic about the beauty of immigration and the American dream...whereas J'onn often has to literally mask and hide his true nature to avoid Ostracization.

I never liked martian manhunter (or superman. or DC for that matter) but I would watch the fuck out of this.

It's funny to think of Superman as a "model immigrant" in terms of his being a foreigner to the US. He's one of the good ones for being raised in Middle America and adopting US customs. Which reminds me that one of the more interesting Superman stories is called Red Son, it's an alternate history where baby Kal El lands in Soviet Ukraine instead of Kansas and is raised by communists. The US and Chile are the last capitalist holdouts on that universe, lmao

One of the punchlines of that story is that President Luthor eventually institutes a planned economy to fight back against Superman...so by the end of the story the conflict isn't even about capitalism versus socialism but whether or not the dominant ideology will be socialism with superman characteristic, or socialism with Luthor characteristics.

Nono, Luthor instutes a special Third way that isn't capitalism or communism, and it magically makes everything a million billion times better than either system, thus proving that we shouldn't do a communism because it will cause humanity to stagnate with silly things like "healthcare and housing for all" instead we need a system that lets the very best people rise to the top and then one day just decide to fix everything forever. It looking like a planned economy and having a true meritocracy with the best and brightest representatives in charge is because communism is bad and doesn't try to do that.

Still mad about that ending tbh, and Luthor's character in general in it, he's stupidly overpowered and pretty much just the author's Mary Sue character who magically fixes everything and stops those evil commies because he's So Smart.

I'd much rather see a version of it where the author actually knew anything about the USSR and socialism and communism, and what sort of underhanded fucked up shit the US gets up to. A communist superman being raised to see the best in humanity vs a Lex Luthor who will do everything in his power as a rich capitalist to exploit that, actively using Superman's empathy as a weapon against him, that sounds a lot better than the story we got. Still one of the better superman stories though.

Wait...did you read the comic or watch the shitty animated adaptation?

[-] Damarcusart@hexbear.net 2 points 2 days ago

I read the comic, I don't think I could really stomach the adaptation. I already made that mistake with The Killing Joke. Not going to make it again.

[-] Ericthescruffy@hexbear.net 3 points 2 days ago

Good instinct, adaptation is infinitely worse. I was gonna say: the movie is trash and blatantly anti Stalin and USSR but I think you're being a bit too harsh of the comic because I remember it actually being quite sympathetic.

[-] Damarcusart@hexbear.net 1 points 2 days ago

I just didn't like all the shit like Superman lobotomising people and the system being presented as unsettling and terrifying, you know, terrifying that everyone has a job and everyone gets a good night's sleep. The comic emphasises vague ideas of "freedom" over actually living decent lives. It starts strong, but gets worse as it goes along in my opinion, and the ending makes me gag.

He's literally a refugee from an alien planet you fucking tourists.

[-] NephewAlphaBravo@hexbear.net 17 points 3 days ago* (last edited 3 days ago)

sure he's a model citizen, perfectly integrated and serves his community and pays his taxes, but what if he gets a transmission from the mexican KGB zerg hivemind and turns into brightburn?

trying to think of a more potent cognitohazard than fox news discourse about capeshit and i cannot

Its clear they want a homelander or some prototype ubermensch and not Superman. Lol at not realising he's an immigrant. Lol when they find out his main rival is a rival is an egotistical billionaire who hates immigrants. Lol when they realize his marriage is of people with different heritage to put it lightly. Lol when they find out most iterations of superman even in red son isn't some homelander or ultraman but fundamentally wants to help people. Lol just lol. Lmao just lmao i-cant

there was some episode of the animated series--which was about a cornfed pro-america version as there ever was--I don't even remember the plot arc, but an antagonist was some rogue government agency that was doing the dirt.

anyway, at some point superman and some agents come into verbal conflict. the whole point of superman is that his OP AF, so superman says something they don't like and one pulls some kind of fancy gun indicating that it can cut through several inches of steel in a second, while menacingly calling Superman an "alien". it blew my mind as a young person, because saying superman isn't American is like saying baseball isn't American, but I had to accept that there would always be pieces of shit like that who viciously seethe and will manufacture any rationale to exclude others... and that "not born here" was an easy, off the rack tool for it.

if I were doing capeshit, I would cram it right up their cram holes. like create satirized but obvious versions of pundits and media owners complaining about immigrants, shoehorn them into the story, and make the entire conflict about how believing strongly in these imaginary lines drawn by the most powerful assholes puts you among the stupidest rubes in the history of the species.

like Terminator: Dark Fate just slightly touched on these themes and showed how efficient, effective, and easily border control resources & infrastructure were for the evil AI's agenda. it wasn't even a major part of the overall plot, just maybe 20-30 minutes of "oh shit, of course it would use these tools" against humanity.
