Also the Black Panthers gave hungry children free breakfast, which was so successful in highlighting racial inequalities that the FBI forced them to stop.

it's not on everyone to teach, but i wither a bit every time somebody is like "i dont have time to educate you" or otherwise abdicates the sponsibility, to favor whining and being shitty. like, somehow one is expected to take in a position on one's own volition, when life seriously almost never works like that - which is to say, life isn't just creating people who are curious and seeking understanding outside of the lane society violently etched into their brains, and if you can teach something better, you do your own ideals a disservice if you refuse to in favor of feeling angry without being productive about the problem

certain positions must be exhausting to explain. I'm not witholding empathy for that. But the work is the work. If you want society to look the way you want and expect, you better be willing to teach

It's weird reading that without context. It's rarely the case, that people sit at home, randomly have an idea about what society should look like and then stubbornly refuse to tell anyone about it. Rather, when people say "it's not my responsibility or duty to educate you" it's usually, because you just were racist or dehumanized queer people or something similar. People who are victims of this shit educate and argue with people all day all their lives, not because they passively would like to see one of their random ideas put into practice, but because it's necessary for their survival. But all this is tiring, even traumatizing. They can't do it every single time someone is being an asshole again. There are just too many assholes. So when they encounter the one too many assholes of the day, that's in my experience the usual time when people in real life sometimes say: "Please educate yourself. Just because I'm queer (or black or muslim or etc.) doesn't mean I'm your unpaid tutor on how to have basic human empathy." And that's valid.

i am a trans woman, i do understand this and have to make decisions about what i have the energy and ability re: safety and mental health to get into with people all the time

i have, and i guess i should make this clear, also seen people just abdicate when they didn't have to. I have the information necessary to say that - and i've seen it more than once, and it's frustrating because this doesn't get better if the average dumbass doesn't understand

apologies, maybe you've seen this sentiment weaponized, but that's not what this is.

[-] woodenghost@hexbear.net 1 points 6 hours ago

Yes of course, I understand. I didn't mean to direct this all at you personally. I hope what I wrote just gives some context.

maybe you've seen this sentiment weaponized, but that's not what this is

Yes, I have, but no need to apologize!

I do teach, they don't listen. I have tried explaining my dysphoria and other issues so many times already and they don't give a fuck what I have to say. Not that we shouldn't explain but so many times it's useless.

[-] RiotDoll@hexbear.net 6 points 19 hours ago

i definitely feel that. i do my best to put the work in, but the idealism of my early transition is gone. i am way more skeptical it'll be affected. but i feel obliged to educate who and when i can

I am not teaching chuds anything ,we need to bully them until they get scared into being loser center left wing civil politics people

I have a little story to tell. Really short because my iPhone screen is dirty and I can’t type, but it’s something I want to expand upon soon:

I’m a member of the lumpen (lumpenproletariat) class. Every one of my friends and almost everyone I so much as talk to is lumpen.

It really feels fucking lonely. Until I met my roommates last year, I was the only non-racist, non-sexist, non-gross, rational person I knew. (I used to have a friend like this, who was so cool to hang out with, but they’re gone now…alive, they just won’t talk to me anymore. I think if I had the friends I have now, then, I wouldn’t have to miss them so much right now.)

Anyways this post reminded me that I need to not be such a mean snob. When my friends are like this, it isn’t because they’re hardcore fash or whatever, and I need to be patient.

(Another thing too is, a lot of us are so jaded and fucked off that we just don’t really care about using PC language. Homeless culture is very thick skinned.)

Ignorance and willful ignorance are different things though.

Someone who hasn't been educated can be educated. Some who refuses to be educated presents a different challenge.

The old saying I use is "You cannot wake a person who is pretending to sleep"

[-] BountifulEggnog@hexbear.net 30 points 23 hours ago* (last edited 22 hours ago)

Chuds don't listen. I totally agree we shouldn't mock them for being uneducated or dumb, that's not even their issue. It's willful ignorance. People aren't anti vax or climate change deniers because it wasn't taught in school. They just choose to ignore evidence, and arguments, and reason.

Another prominent example, abortion. They aren't "pro life" because of some educational misunderstanding. They've heard pro choice arguments. That its a bodily autonomy issue, we don't force corpses to give up their organs, etc. That messaging has been out forever. They just choose the emotional "reason" of "b-but its a baaby". They dismiss any education on a fetus, in fact, not being a baby. (do you think my mom is actually going to give a shit if I tell her the machine that you "hear" the heartbeat with just makes that noise up from the electrical pulses? That the "heart" isn't actually pumping blood around as young as they claim a "heartbeat" is detectable in? No, she fucking won't.) They don't care and idk how to make them care.

People aren’t anti vax or climate change deniers because it wasn’t taught in school. They just choose to ignore evidence, and arguments, and reason.

This is somewhat uncharitable because this conspiratorial thinking is the result of an understandable lack of trust in our institutions. For example, a lot of Black folk initially didn't want to get the vaccine because the "Tuskegee Study of Untreated Syphilis in the Negro Male" experiment is still in living memory.

They just choose the emotional “reason” of “b-but its a baaby”. They dismiss any education on a fetus, in fact, not being a baby.

This is a blatant straw-man. The question "When does human life begin?" is inherently philosophical in nature. We may, as educated persons, reasonably defer to science for an answer. This isn't the same, however, as science answering the question. Further, religious people who believe human beings have souls are unlikely to defer to science. The notion of a soul is outside the purview of science, and so presenting scientific facts to them will be ineffective. (For more, see the mind-body problem in the history of philosophy.)

The point here is not to say that they have a good argument to enforce pro-life on the rest of us. Why should religious belief in human souls constrain the conduct of non-believers? Rather, my point is that you have completely misrepresenting the opposing view in order to preach to the choir.

[-] MayoPete@hexbear.net 5 points 15 hours ago

We don't need to make them care. We need to defeat them.

[-] Self_Sealing_Stem_Bolt@hexbear.net 21 points 22 hours ago

Yeah, I mock libs for their illiteracy, but its because I know it comes from intullectual laziness and not from some inherent inferiority. They could do better, they actively choose NOT to.

[-] DragonBallZinn@hexbear.net 11 points 21 hours ago* (last edited 21 hours ago)

CHUDs are some of the laziest people I know.

Stereotypes literally exist because people are too lazy to judge people as individuals and want an easy way to write someone they don’t like off and flatter themselves at the same time.

War and exploitation are a lazy way to get resources. Instead of bringing something valuable to the table, all they offer is “or cracker smash you!”

Why aren’t businesses hiring anymore? Because thanks to AI, they don’t need to. Who cares if a whole section of the infrastructure is being taken out on a whim. Porky wants free labor and feels entitled to it.

[-] sewer_rat_420@hexbear.net 23 points 22 hours ago

Libs are the ones that need educating, except they are just as likely to plug their ears and scream as the CHUDs are

[-] casskaydee@hexbear.net 10 points 21 hours ago* (last edited 21 hours ago)

I could have sworn we had an emoji of the DNC ghouls plugging their ears at Pissrael protests but this is the closest I can find: not-listening

Most CHUDs can read just fine

[-] purpleworm@hexbear.net 28 points 23 hours ago* (last edited 23 hours ago)

Statistically, I'm not sure if that's true unless your standard for "read just fine" is baseline literacy. Granted, that's also true of many Dems, though it's shrinking as they increasingly lose all of their base that isn't educated white people.

[-] LeeeroooyJeeenkiiins@hexbear.net 24 points 22 hours ago* (last edited 22 hours ago)

Honestly I'm pretty sure a double digit percentage of the adults in america literally cannot read even at what I would consider "baseline literacy." Like I'd be doing customer service and basically half of everybody needed to be walked through incredibly simple processes, not only simple but with the instructions on the phone screen in front of them, and their reaction to this information being in front of them was basically like a Westworld android going "huh that dont look like anything to me!"

[-] Self_Sealing_Stem_Bolt@hexbear.net 15 points 22 hours ago

I mean, no they can't. Only 11% of western adults can even read books written for adults.

[-] phpinjected@lemmy.sdf.org 21 points 23 hours ago
[-] JoeByeThen@hexbear.net 34 points 23 hours ago

What, No! That's ludicrous.

The FBI killed Fred Hampton, in cooperation with the Chicago Police.

[-] deforestgump@hexbear.net 21 points 23 hours ago

Libs only read Harry Potter

[-] TommyBeans@hexbear.net 12 points 22 hours ago

“This is a non-fiction book, it’s like Hunger Games, but real”

“That sounds boring”

[-] Lussy@hexbear.net 5 points 22 hours ago

I must be nice to chuds, I remind myself as I’m eating their ass and getting dabbed on
