For some context, the woman pictured is the incarnation of War (hence her love for America).

[-] somename@hexbear.net 57 points 5 months ago

More context: Nuclear weapons got erased from reality in the past, weakening her. But the US is so bloodthirsty they ended up reinventing them from first principles.

[-] homhom9000@hexbear.net 33 points 5 months ago

Wait is chainsaw man kinda based ? Or at least has something to say?

[-] thethirdgracchi@hexbear.net 35 points 5 months ago

Chainsaw Man is extremely based and absolutely has something to say. It's a very political series, and Fujimoto is a supremely talented writer. I'd recommend giving it a try.

[-] SevenSkalls@hexbear.net 27 points 5 months ago* (last edited 5 months ago)

I thought the series was going to be for chuds tbh because of Elon and Milei constantly referencing it.

Now I feel bad and I should probably give it a chance and read it.

[-] MizuTama@hexbear.net 30 points 5 months ago

You could force feed them messaging and chuds would still vomit up the point. Bad metric

[-] thethirdgracchi@hexbear.net 25 points 5 months ago

It's honestly insane that Milei like co-opted a series about a guy living in crushing poverty being used as a meat shield by an uncaring government. Like the themes explored in the series are so against bootstrap libertarianism.

[-] ExotiqueMatter@lemmygrad.ml 17 points 5 months ago

DO NOT TAKE THESE PEOPLE'S INTERPRETATION OF ANY MEDIA SERIOUSLY. You could give them the most based leftist piece of fiction ever and they'd still manage to convince themselves that it's right wing somehow. Elon literally thinks that Karl Marx's writing are pro capitalists, that's how media illiterate these bozos are.

[-] purpleworm@hexbear.net 14 points 5 months ago

Elon and Milei constantly referencing it.

I'm not familiar with this. Are they just using the name because they think it fits their chainsaw motif?

I read up until

SpoilerDenji starting school after eating Makima and Power being gone but I thought it dropped the government conspiracy recruiting devil hunter plot line so I got bored and dropped it.

[-] CriticalOtaku@hexbear.net 19 points 5 months ago

Part 2 does take a while to get going, it probably reads better now in a binge rather than week to week

In addition to what others posted, the main character Denji (AKA Chainsaw Man) is only 16 years old. The adults around him are constantly abusing and manipulating him due to his powers. Sure, he's a horny teenager with zero education. Yet nobody around him is looking out for his best interests or raising him to be a functional adult.

It's one of the major themes in the series. This is just a kid being sent to face horrors from literal Hell with no regard to what kind of impact this could have on his psyche.

[-] thethirdgracchi@hexbear.net 45 points 5 months ago* (last edited 5 months ago)

I mean it's not like this wasn't foreshadowed with the American thugs in Part 1 and the whole Statue of Liberty stuff earlier in Part 2, but God damn does Fujimoto really hate America. Bruv really just said amerikkka in a wildly popular manga, nothing but respect.

[-] thethirdgracchi@hexbear.net 38 points 5 months ago

More and more people are saying this folks

[-] thethirdgracchi@hexbear.net 41 points 5 months ago

This is not something new for Fujimoto btw, this is how he drew "Captain America":

[-] MaoShanDong@hexbear.net 34 points 5 months ago

The greatest minds of reddit-logo are going around calling Fujimoto based and praising this depiction on a recent thread talking about this chapter lol. Truly media literacy is dead.

[-] thethirdgracchi@hexbear.net 27 points 5 months ago

Like, praising this depection in a "wow this really captures the truly demonic aspect of American imperialism" way or a "wow America is cool I love death" way?

[-] mrfugu@hexbear.net 24 points 5 months ago

the reading comprehension devil also loves america

[-] purpleworm@hexbear.net 20 points 5 months ago

The reading comprehension devil was eaten by Chainsaw Man a long time ago

We gotta bomb amerikkka nerds

We need death of the reader

[-] CriticalOtaku@hexbear.net 25 points 5 months ago* (last edited 5 months ago)

Death of the Author just means that an author's interpretation of their work doesn't supersede a reader's interpretation and that both can be equally valid.

WHAT PART OF THE STAR SPANGLED BANNER BEING PLAYED OVER THE CHARRED CORPSES OF THE VICTIMS OF A NUCLEAR ATTACK BY AMERICA CAN BE CONSTRUED AS COMPLIMENTARY OR "LOOKING AWESOME"?!?! YOU'RE NOT INTERPRETING OR ENGAGING WITH THE WORK OF FICTION IN FRONT OF YOU, YOU'RE HALLUCINATING AT BEST OR AT WORST ACTIVELY REWRITING THE NARRATIVE TO SUIT YOUR GHOULISH PREFERENCES! THE AUTHOR ISN'T DEAD, YOU MURDERED THE POOR FUCKER! AND FOR WHAT, SO YOUR POOR EGO ISN'T BRUISED AND YOU WON'T NEED TO REFLECT ON WHAT THE STORY IS TRYING TO TELL YOU ABOUT REAL LIFE? YOU'RE BASICALLY ADMITTING THAT SENSELESS MASS DEATH IS COOL YOU FUCKING MONSTER! AAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!

Sorry had to scream into the void for a bit, but that take in the comments was wild.

Anyway got this gem from r/curatedtumbler, which is basically what happens when I'm asked to explain what Chainsaw Man is about after a few drinks, and the reply is "it's not that deep bro" - a lot of vindicated literature students out there today:

Worshipping power. When your empire is morally bankrupt, you have to replace morals with something. Social Darwinism and all the other shit that replaces humanity and inevitably creates fascism.

If I want to get started with the series, what version should I start reading on what site? I saw on mangadex that there is an official colored release, but it doesn't have english chapters uploaded.

[-] barrbaric@hexbear.net 16 points 5 months ago

Mangadex complies with takedown requests, so they'll only host the english chapters that are officially available for free (the first 3 and the most recent 3). There are a bunch of sites hosting pirated versions of it, though you'll obviously want an adblocker (here's one from a quick google).

wheres the based devil because im lowkey scared of how based fishymoto is

[-] SevenSkalls@hexbear.net 16 points 5 months ago

Oh is he like the opposite of that Manga artist that made Attack on Titan? Or Kojima (who I know doesn't like war, but I heard he's an Ameri-boo)?

[-] mrfugu@hexbear.net 16 points 5 months ago

I think fujimoto and kojima are very similar in their love for western cinema/media. I’ve only ever played mgs1 mgs2 and a little death stranding but imo it’s hard to say how kojima actually feels about america. I think fujimoto was pretty clear today
