Image is of Putin and Scholz sitting on opposite ends of a frighteningly long table back in 2022. Folks, the table is gonna get ten feet longer.

The latest round of US-Russian diplomacy is taking place on August 15th in Alaska, where Putin and Trump are meeting in-person to maybe try and bring an end to this godforsaken conflict. While I don't want to totally discount the possibility that they may come to an agreement - you truly never know! - there's a lot stacked against this encounter yielding much of anything.

Russia appears to have demanded a land swap; that Ukraine fully withdraw from Kherson and Zaporozhye oblasts (in exchange for unspecified Russian gains, but probably parts of Sumy and Kharkov) as a precondition for a ceasefire that could perhaps lead to a permanent resolution of the conflict, and Ukraine seems completely unwilling to do anything of the sort, saying that even if they wanted to, the process of just giving up a couple oblasts would take significant time and require referendums. I say that Russia has appeared to demand it, because there's been a lot of confusion - probably in bad faith - about what Russian diplomats and Putin himself have said and what the demands even are. There are some who speculate that Trump will sell out Ukraine and blame Zelensky for refusing to agree with Russian demands, and there are others who say that this just the latest of many examples of the US and Russia meeting up with such fundamental differences that a deal is impossible, and that Trump fully expects to put sanctions on Russia after Putin declines some harebrained American scheme.

Anyway. After the summit, in late August, Putin is due to arrive for a visit to India, at Modi's invitation. Previously, I was unsure exactly what India would do in response to American sanctions pressure, and now we appear to be receiving an answer, as Modi has made public statements that suggest that he is only getting closer to Russia. Fascinatingly, Modi will soon make his first visit to China in seven years at the annual SCO summit at the end of August, and Putin will be heading to China too on September 3rd. There is an increasing amount of dismissal about the potential of BRICS (especially one that contains India), and that dismissal is certainly rather justified, but I am still deeply curious about what developments may occur as the global south braces to face the remaining ~85% of Trump's presidency.

The potential historical irony of Putin getting ambushed and arrested in Alaska is simply too delicious to ignore

One of the butchers of the Soviet Union and the undisputed master of oligarchic Russia getting undone by the same ideology and moronic instinct that led him to betray the socialist project: Trusting the west for the sake of global neoliberalism

I genuinely hope Trump is deranged enough to pull it off and Putin is foolish enough to actually fly to Alaska, the damage to western credibility would be enormous and the blow to the neolib faction of Russian elites would be final

Come on you bloated Orange fuck, do something actaully funny angry-place

Nepal and Ethiopia's surprising EV boom

Interesting article worth a full read, here's a few selected excerpts:

Nearly 90% of new cars bought in Norway in 2024 were electric, but do you know who came next? No, it’s not another rich European nation. It was followed by Singapore, Ethiopia and then Nepal, according to data provided by Bloomberg.

After importing oil from India became tricky after its southern neighbor imposed a blockade in 2015, the Nepalese government was forced to shift its focus to expanding the country’s hydroelectric generation capability to keep up with its growing power demands. It also imposed much higher import duties on combustion cars and reduced them for electric models, making EVs cheaper to buy in many cases than their ICE equivalent.

In Nepal, taxis, police, and some government services are going electric. China even offered to give Nepal 100 electric buses for free to help clean the rather polluted atmosphere in Kathmandu, where combustion-powered mopeds, motorbikes, cars and vans still dominate the landscape. For now, at least.

Ethiopia also deserves a mention in this context.** In 2024, it was the world’s first country to enforce an outright ban on the import of combustion engine vehicles.** Just two years in, this has had a profound effect on its pool of 1.3 million vehicles. Now, around 8.3%, roughly 100,000 vehicles, are pure electric, which puts it far ahead of any other African nation, at least according to the official figures from its government.

But the rest of the world needs to take notice of one key concept here: China is the world’s biggest promoter and producer of electric vehicles. And it’s where the vast majority of the EVs sold in places like Nepal and Ethiopia are coming from.

Another example of rapid EV adoption growth is Vietnam, where EVs from local brand VinFast accounted for 30% of the entire new car market in the first half of 2025, according to one industry analyst who posted on LinkedIn. That’s 67,569 EVs delivered in six months in a country that had fewer than a few hundred EVs registered in 2018. Vietnam has exempted EVs from having to pay a registration fee, and other taxes are also lower for EVs specifically to spur adoption.

All of this means that many ‘developing’ countries will surpass the ‘developed’ West in EVs per capita way before their statistical prosperity comes anywhere near matching the West’s, with the help of China, which is more than happy to open new markets where it can sell its plentiful and very keenly priced EVs.

🚨BREAKING — A man was killed by ICE during a raid at Home Depot off of the 210 Highway in Monrovia today.

All out for an emergency rally TONIGHT at 6pm! ICE out of our communities!

📍Monrovia Home Depot — 1625 Mountain Ave

  • Party for Socialism and Liberation

This is the second death during an ice raid in southern California this summer. Monrovia is a heavily Latino working class city just east of Los Angeles.

Reporting from local outlets indicate he fled the home depot on foot, into the 210 freeway where he was struck by a vehicle.

In other sillier ICE news, ICE apparently did an "operation" right next to where Gavin Newsom was giving his speech on gerrymandering CA house districts. It was a coincidence of course, this was just "roving enforcement" according to ICE

Was true some weeks ago but basically Trump is wishing a stronger BRICS into existence by using tariffs to bring them closer together.

A month ago it was more unimaginable that Brazil would be leading the anti-US dialogue and even less, that fucking Modi would be meeting with Xi lmao.

Bolivia's presidential elections are today. Since 2005, the socialist MAS party has won every single vote with huge majorities. Now they’re set for a massive defeat due to internal splits, currently polling at just 1.5%.

We’ll need to wait for the results for a full analysis, but for 4 years there’s been a rift between Evo Morales and the middle-class faction that took power in 2020, over who controls the party. Evo lost the internal struggle. Luis Arce’s faction used state power to seize control of MAS, but they’re now heading toward a devastating defeat as Evo calls for a boycott of the elections.

This division has opened the door for the neoliberal right, who will hand Bolivia’s natural resources over to US interests. The consequences could not be more dire.

The current MAS candidate, Eduardo del Castillo, was the one who led the factional war against Evo Morales and pushed for him to be banned from standing. As the poll above shows, it’s only a pyrrhic victory for him, the MAS is over without Evo.

uncle-ho-2 From the Hanoi Times

Vietnam has launched a nationwide fundraising campaign to support the Cuban people, reinforcing the countries’ long-standing friendship and solidarity.

From someone on twitter:

This campaign is taking the Vietnamese internet with storm. In less than 24h, ~$1 million in donations from the public received. But this is a rare admission from another formally ‘fraternal’ socialist state that Cuba’s situation is extremely severe.

Both of them (Cuba and Vietnam) once challenged Soviet and Chinese chauvinism while combating with the US. Not even the USSR today can invoke as strong Vietnamese feelings as Cuba.

Leader of the Yemeni Revolution Sayed Abdul Malik al-Houthi, in his speech today:

⭕️ The Israeli enemy's announcement of its plan to occupy Gaza is an escalatory step in its ongoing, horrific criminality.

⭕️ The Lebanese government’s submission to and adoption of the American proposal is a betrayal and violation of Lebanese sovereignty, and an insult to the Lebanese people. The problem is not the weapons of the resistance and free people, but the weapons of the Israeli enemy.

⭕️ Arab governments suffer from shameful weakness because they quickly submit to any American and Israeli pressure. The slogan "Death to Arabs" has been an Israeli slogan since the beginning of the Zionist occupation of Palestine, chanted in their events and gatherings.

⭕️ There is no Arab leader who dares to respond to Netanyahu’s statements about his belief in the "Greater Israel" project.

⭕️ It is a strange and sad irony that Norway boycotts the enemy economically while Egypt moves to sign the largest gas deal with it.

BREAKING: 🇧🇴 Neoliberal candidate Rodrigo Paz has come 1st in Bolivia's presidential elections. Without Evo Morales, the left has collapsed. The MAS party expelled him and now has just 3.2%. After 20 years of hegemony, the left has lost power. How did it all go so wrong?

Evo Morales’ MAS won every election from 2005–2020 with huge majorities, thanks to nationalizing resources, redistributing wealth, and turning Bolivia from the poorest to the fastest-growing economy in the region.

The party was led by indigenous movements, allied with unions and the progressive middle class. That coalition shattered after 2020 when President Luis Arce empowered the middle-class faction and banned Evo from running again.

The split wasn’t ideological at first, but about access to state jobs and contracts. Evo’s faction was excluded, while Arce’s supporters feared losing their new privileges if Evo returned to power.

The dispute exploded over who would be the presidential candidate. Arce stacked the courts, which granted his faction legal control of MAS, shutting Evo out.

This split cost Arce his majority in Congress, leaving him unable to pass economic policies. This led to crisis & inflation. The economic collapse drove voters away from MAS. Rural indigenous communities largely stayed with Evo, while the urban middle class shifted to the right.

Driving the war against Evo was Interior Minister Eduardo del Castillo, now MAS’s presidential candidate. His personal ambitions destroyed the party, now polling at barely 3%.

Due to their candidate being banned, Evo's mostly indigenous supporters decided to boycott the elections. They have today shown that they're still the largest section of the left (and that banning Evo was a disaster).

This defeat wasn’t inevitable. It’s the result of the left tearing itself apart over who reaps the rewards of the state - a fate that can face any movement once in govt. Arce's use of the state (police & courts) to settle the dispute through persection was the nail in the coffin.

Is all hope lost? Of course not. Evo's soiled ballots are set to win more support than any candidate. Something new will grow out of that movement. In fact, I predict that the new neoliberal govt will be toppled before its term ends, pro-US elites never survive long in Bolivia.

"The United States stands in solidarity with his family, the Colombian people, both in mourning and demanding justice for those responsible," said Rubio.

It's that time of the month again: guess who's back in the hospital.

Bolsonaro's tests show residual signs of lung infections, esophagitis, and gastritis, according to medical report. A medical bulletin released on Saturday by DF Star Hospital in Brasília reports that tests performed on former President Jair Bolsonaro showed signs of lung infections, esophagitis, and gastritis.

According to the document, the tests revealed “residual images of two recent lung infections possibly related to episodes of bronchoaspiration.”

“The endoscopy showed persistence of esophagitis and gastritis, now less intense, but requiring continued medication,” the medical bulletin said. The doctors' recommendation is that the former president continue treatment for high blood pressure and reflux and take preventive measures against bronchoaspiration.

Bolsonaro left house arrest early to undergo blood and urine tests, an endoscopy, and an abdominal CT scan. He has already left the hospital and has not spoken to the press. According to his lawyers, the former president has been experiencing reflux and hiccups.

The president of the First Panel of the Federal Supreme Court (STF), Cristiano Zanin (former lawyer of Lula da Silva), cheduled the first session of the criminal trial for the attempted coup d'état for September 2. Bolsonaro is accused by the Attorney General's Office (PGR) of being the “main orchestrator, greatest beneficiary, and author” of actions aimed at disrupting the democratic rule of law in order to remain in power even after his defeat by Lula in 2022.

Also this:

The former first lady, Bolsonaro's wife, Michelle Bolsonaro called President Lula da Silva a drunkard and a boozer, saying that Jair Bolsonaro, who is ineligible, will return. She also called northeasterners idiots for voting for the Workers' Party and the left several times, saying this while visiting a sparsely attended event in northeastern Brazil.

At the event in Natal, the former first lady said that it “hurts Bolsonaro's soul” not to be able to leave his home, but that he will return and be elected president in 2026. “He is at home, but he is there like a crab in a can, waiting to return to work, travel, and win the 2026 elections,” she said.

According to recent polls Michelle has the highest voting intention among the Bolsonaro family members listed as potential candidates against Lula in 2026. She has 20% of the votes, against 49% for the Workers' Party candidate. It is believed that most of her votes would come from Brazil's protestant population, but she is notoriously rejected by a large portion of Jair Bolsonaro's male voters.

Earlier this year, even members of Bolsonaro's inner circle, such as former aide Col. Mauro Cid and former communications secretary Fabio Wajngarten, said they would rather vote for Lula than Michelle.

“Man, if Michelle tries to enter politics, in a high position, she will be destroyed, because I think she has a lot of dirty stuff... not just dirty, but her personality, they will use everything against her to destroy her.” said the colonel. Wajngarten replied: “I prefer to vote for Lula.” Cid then said: “Same.”

Two flights of B-2 Spirit stealth bombers (suspected to be one bomber per flight), on their way to Elmendorf Air Force Base, Alaska, ahead of the Trump-Putin meeting. Elmendorf already has a lot of F-22 Raptor 5th generation stealth aircraft on station by default, the base was designed to accommodate 36 F-22s, and was home to more than 47 at one point. Expect a full "show of force" in an attempt to intimidate Putin and the Russian delegation, maybe similar to this photo, also from Elmendorf, but with B-2s as well:

"Dress in your most elegant clothes, style your hair well, put on perfume, and smile for the photo, because you might be the next martyr.” - The martyr Nour Jarrar

Yesterday, August 16, marked the third martyrdom anniversary of four heroic resistance fighters who remained true to the path of the founder and commander, Jamil Al-Amouri. The sons of Jenin, Nour Jarrar, Raed Abu Seif, Saleh Ammar, and Amjad Al-Azmi ascended to martyrdom after the occupation forces stormed Jenin Camp and were met with fierce clashes by the resistance fighters.

The first martyr, Nour Jarrar was always active in the life of resistance. He was always present in community events and funeral processions for the martyrs, he eventually joined the Saraya Al-Quds brigade to continue the path towards liberation. Throughout his life, he was repeatedly arrested by the Palestinian Authority. When Nour was just 14 years old, the PA arrested him after he attempted to carry out a stabbing operation at the Jalameh checkpoint. Later in his life, he was arrested by the occupation forces; after his release from the occupation's prison, he quickly saved up money just to purchase a rifle and return to his life of resistance. Nour embodied himself as one of the first fighters in Jenin Camp to rise on the path of Al-Amouri. In response to this, the occupation forces would threaten him and his family to give up his resistance activities. After the martyrdom of Jamil Al-Amouri, the Palestinian Authority offered him to hand over his weapon in exchange for a pardon. However, Nour paid no attention to these negotiations and cowardly tactics, Nour decided to remain on the path of Al-Amouri and to never surrender himself, honoring the phrase "Victory or Martyrdom."

The second martyr, Nour's close companion, Amjad Al-Azmi, was also a resistance fighter. Amjad and Nour would do everything together, from traveling to resisting. With secrecy, Nour would help Amjad in manufacturing and gathering explosive devices. Amjad was martyred while attempting to save the life of the fighter Nour Jarrar, who was shot by a zionist sniper. When Amjad reached Nour, he was shot by the occupation forces, ascending as a martyr on the battlefield beside his comrade, Nour Jarrar.

The third martyr, Raed Abu Seif sought martyrdom and by the will of God, he was honored with it.

The last martyr, Saleh Ammar, ascended to martyrdom after confrontations with the invading occupation forces in his neighborhood.

The mother of the martyr Nour Jarrar says that Nour's wish was to visit and eat breakfast in Al-Quds and pray in Al-Aqsa Mosque, and on August 16th, he rose as a martyr on the road to Al-Quds. Today, the bodies of the two companions and resistance fighters, Nour Jarrar and Amjad Al-Azmi remain detained by the occupation forces, preventing them from having a proper burial.

Glory to the martyrs.

Norway's Finance Minister states the fund should not invest in companies contributing to the occupation of the West Bank and the war in Gaza, with an expectation further measures regarding investments in "israel."

In May, the Norwegian Trade Unions voted by a margin of 88% to boycott companies from the zionists entity and prohibit dealing with them, and Norway announced recognition of the State of Palestine weeks later.

Organizations from the African continent launch day of solidarity with the Alliance of Sahel States

As the second anniversary of the Alliance of Sahel States approaches on September 16, 2025, the Pan Africanism Today Secretariat (PAT), composed of over 70 people’s movements and organizations across Africa, has issued a call to action, urging all progressive forces across the continent and around the globe to stand in solidarity with the AES. According to PAT, this would entail publicly declaring solidarity with the peoples of Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger, amplifing the political significance of the Alliance of Sahel States (AES), and exposing the role of imperialist powers and ECOWAS in undermining their sovereignty.

Movements are urged to organize mass mobilizations, protests, and other coordinated actions on September 16, 2025 to mark the AES’s second anniversary, as well as host educational events, forums, and teach-ins to deepen political understanding of the struggle. Cultural and creative expressions, along with bold acts of agitation and disruption, should be used to communicate the AES’s vision, challenge neocolonialism, and integrate solidarity into ongoing political activities.
