Image is of Putin and Scholz sitting on opposite ends of a frighteningly long table back in 2022. Folks, the table is gonna get ten feet longer.

The latest round of US-Russian diplomacy is taking place on August 15th in Alaska, where Putin and Trump are meeting in-person to maybe try and bring an end to this godforsaken conflict. While I don't want to totally discount the possibility that they may come to an agreement - you truly never know! - there's a lot stacked against this encounter yielding much of anything.

Russia appears to have demanded a land swap; that Ukraine fully withdraw from Kherson and Zaporozhye oblasts (in exchange for unspecified Russian gains, but probably parts of Sumy and Kharkov) as a precondition for a ceasefire that could perhaps lead to a permanent resolution of the conflict, and Ukraine seems completely unwilling to do anything of the sort, saying that even if they wanted to, the process of just giving up a couple oblasts would take significant time and require referendums. I say that Russia has appeared to demand it, because there's been a lot of confusion - probably in bad faith - about what Russian diplomats and Putin himself have said and what the demands even are. There are some who speculate that Trump will sell out Ukraine and blame Zelensky for refusing to agree with Russian demands, and there are others who say that this just the latest of many examples of the US and Russia meeting up with such fundamental differences that a deal is impossible, and that Trump fully expects to put sanctions on Russia after Putin declines some harebrained American scheme.

Anyway. After the summit, in late August, Putin is due to arrive for a visit to India, at Modi's invitation. Previously, I was unsure exactly what India would do in response to American sanctions pressure, and now we appear to be receiving an answer, as Modi has made public statements that suggest that he is only getting closer to Russia. Fascinatingly, Modi will soon make his first visit to China in seven years at the annual SCO summit at the end of August, and Putin will be heading to China too on September 3rd. There is an increasing amount of dismissal about the potential of BRICS (especially one that contains India), and that dismissal is certainly rather justified, but I am still deeply curious about what developments may occur as the global south braces to face the remaining ~85% of Trump's presidency.

Moon of Alabama, which tends to have interesting analysis. Avoid the comment section.
Understanding War and the Saker: reactionary sources that have occasional insights on the war.
Alexander Mercouris, who does daily videos on the conflict. While he is a reactionary and surrounds himself with likeminded people, his daily update videos are relatively brainworm-free and good if you don't want to follow Russian telegram channels to get news. He also co-hosts The Duran, which is more explicitly conservative, racist, sexist, transphobic, anti-communist, etc when guests are invited on, but is just about tolerable when it's just the two of them if you want a little more analysis.

🚨 According to the Government Media Office:

Only 136 aid trucks entered the Gaza Strip on Wednesday and Thursday, a fraction of the 1,200 needed. Most were looted amid deliberate security chaos, part of the occupation's policy to engineer starvation and chaos.

In 19 days, only 1,671 aid trucks have entered Gaza, approximately 15% of the actual needs. The occupation prevents sufficient aid, fails to secure shipments, and continues to close crossings, undermining humanitarian efforts.

Gaza requires over 600 aid trucks daily. The occupation and its allies are held fully responsible for the humanitarian catastrophe. Calls are made for the international community to act decisively, open crossings, ensure aid flow, and hold the occupation accountable for its crimes.

🟢 Hamas, in a statement, rejects and strongly condemns the UN Secretary-General's report listing the movement on the "blacklist" for sexual violence.

The movement states this inclusion is legally void and factually incorrect, based solely on politicized and fabricated "israeli" narratives without independent investigation or adherence to international evidence standards.

"The movement recalls that Security Council Resolution 1820 (2008) and Resolution 2467 (2019) emphasized that all allegations of sexual violence in conflicts must be subject to independent and impartial field investigations in accordance with recognized international standards of proof, which was not respected in the case of this inclusion."

In stark contrast, the zionist occupation forces were excluded, despite hundreds of documented evidence from UN fact-finding missions and independent human rights organizations proving systematic sexual violence against Palestinian civilians, includingremoved, in the ongoing genocide in Gaza.

Hamas calls on the UN Secretary-General and Security Council to:

  1. Review and immediately withdraw this unjust decision.
  2. Open an independent international investigation into all sexual violence claims related to the conflict.
  3. Prosecute and hold "zionist" leaders accountable for all crimes ofremoved and sexual violence against our people and prisoners in their Nazi detention camps, bringing them before the International Criminal Court.

Hamas affirms that the politicization of international justice and double standards in applying international humanitarian law undermine trust in the UN system and encourage true perpetrators to continue their crimes.

As expected, the US is doing some kind of "show of force" demonstration ahead of the Putin visit. F-22 Raptor 5th generation stealth fighter aircraft have been rolled out next to the red carpet Putin is expected to walk in on.

We got a picture of Trump and Putin with the F-22s, and a B-2 Spirit stealth bomber flyby, escorted by F-35s. Pretty much gone exactly as predicted with regards to the "show of force".

Video of the B-2 flyover, timed just as Putin greets Trump

Trump and Putin then entered the US presidential limousine together, and drive past another B-2 bomber on the ground

Sergey Lavrov’s Alaska outfit hints at Soviet nostalgia Politico

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov appeared to be wearing a sweater with the letters “CCCP” — Russian for USSR — upon his arrival in Alaska.

Lavrov will be part of the Kremlin’s delegation when Russian President Vladimir Putin and U.S. President Donald Trump meet later on Friday in a hotly anticipated summit to discuss the war in Ukraine.

Lavrov’s white sweatshirt was carefully hidden under a black gilet with only the middle letters “CC” clearly showing in a video posted on X.

The current Russian regime has repeatedly exploited USSR nostalgia to pursue its political and imperial goals, according to experts, with Putin calling the break-up of the Soviet Union the “greatest political catastrophe” of the 20th century during an address in 2005.

Moscow’s longing for the past has also been frequently linked to its full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022 and the ensuing war, which Trump hopes to bring to an end in Alaska on Friday.

lmao what a farce. Russia really needs to shut up about the USSR.

~~Because of sanctions~~ Russian journalists in Alaska for the summit cannot get hotels nor can they get phone service. They are being housed in a indoor sport stadium on red cross cots. Bizarre for such an supposedly important summit.

Russian media themselves disagree with the statement that it's because of sanctions, from what I'm seeing. They're saying that part of the Russian journalists are housed in hotels, but that there aren't enough hotel rooms in bumfuck Alaska for so many people so they enabled the stadium and are hosting them there. Maybe the sanctions part isn't true?

There’s this dumb idea that people aren’t eating out as much or shopping as much because they’re not forced to go to the office as often. And it’s like bro we’re just broke. Give us more money and I promise you we’ll eat out more. Like I love getting slop shoved down my gullet, I’m not doing it less because I don’t see my manager as often, I swear.

It's $25 for the cheapest lunch. I make solid money and it's hurting.

[-] thethirdgracchi@hexbear.net 33 points 1 day ago

This is entirely anecdotal of course, but that's not even true. For example, a lot less people are going to Manhattan now for office jobs, so yes restaurant revenue and stuff is down in Manhattan. But New Yorkers who live in other boroughs like Queens that work from home now just go out for lunch nearer to them, so all these new restaurants and stuff have popped up everywhere where people actually live and not in the downtown business district midtown core.

All Palestinian factions are showing flexibility towards proposals to end the aggression in the Strip.

We are making efforts with all parties in the region to end the suffering of our people.

🚨 The family of Mohammed Eid Nafi', a prisoner held by the Palestinian Authority from Tulkarem refugee camp, is making an urgent appeal for his release after he has spent more than seven months in Al-Junaid Prison. Nearly two months ago, a Palestinian court ordered his release, yet the security services have refused to comply. Mohammed appears in this photo next to his martyred brother "Izkihim," whose loss has deeply affected the family.

Their father, who underwent open-heart surgery and continues to suffer from both physical and emotional pain, and their grieving mother are pleading with everyone — particularly human rights organizations — to take serious action to ensure the court’s decision is implemented. They stress that Mohammed’s release is essential so he can help care for his parents and support the family.

They also call for the freedom of all political prisoners who, like Mohammed, have obtained release orders from Palestinian courts but remain imprisoned by the treacherous Authority.
