Why are people wasting their time on Twitter? It’s a shithole. Just move on. I am off Reddit, Facebook and Twitter because it’s a Nazi shithole.

Maybe because it's not your job to write comments that reach the most amount of people?

I'm so confused about this "blame the individual" thing around social media platforms Monopoly on user capture.

There is a reason Monopolies have to be torn apart by governments. You don't just organically have individuals fix that by leaving the public square. You remove the censorship and capitalist dictatorship that is controlling what is seen in the public square.

You have the luxury of leaving them. It's not your job to reach out to the most amount of people with your messages.

that only addresses the people that have to stay due to their livelihoods; which are in the minority.

the VAST majority don't have to be on those platforms, but chose to be nonetheless. doing so makes them more susceptible to manipulation of monopolies and propaganda; they're self re-enforcing their own doom scrolling

[-] turdburglar@sh.itjust.works 2 points 1 day ago

yeah i get that, but i still get frustrated seeing so many frenz and fam doom scrolling those shitty apps.

i also don’t have to get the eyeballs for my job so was able to leave without consequence, and i realize that’s a great privilege. but it’s hard to watch others willingly, just out of habit, feed these shit machines with eyes and data.

Then get off Twitter!? I don't understand normies.

[-] geneva_convenience@lemmy.ml 48 points 1 day ago

Pointing out censorship on a platform is very important.

[-] Fiivemacs@lemmy.ca 31 points 1 day ago

continuing to use that same platform as your main thing is just...stupid though.

[-] comfy@lemmy.ml 6 points 1 day ago

as your main thing

I completely agree.

However doing something like OP is, criticizing the platform to an audience using that platform, can be important too so long as they help suggest a good alternative. (and I don't know if they are)

If everyone with a brain leaves, who will scream at the void?

[-] wheezy@lemmy.ml 6 points 1 day ago

For journalist they can't just "get off Twitter". It's become the means by which they communicate and share information with their audience and other journalist. It was this way long before Elon took over. It's hard to undo a "public square" like that.

A lot of them post on multiple platforms. But if you want your message to reach more eyes. You still have to post on Twitter.

[-] limer@lemmy.ml 13 points 1 day ago

It’s like complaining about the injustice of moderation on truth social

[-] wheezy@lemmy.ml 3 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

It's not. Because despite the Nazis returning to Twitter after Elon bought it it is still the website used by journalist and political commentators to get their message to the most eyes. Should it be? No. But that doesn't make it any less true.

You post on Truth social if you're a MAGA nut. Twitter is still filled with the most people to reach out to and will be for the foreseeable future.

It's the very reason a platform like that should not be privately owned. Hoping "the market" somehow removes its monopoly on user capture and scale is silly. And blaming people that still use it to reach the most people is even more silly. You meet the people where they are at.

You don't put your poster in a clean hotel most people won't see. You post it the dirty public square. That public square is owned by a Nazi capitalist though. So pointing that out and complaining about it is more than reasonable.

[-] limer@lemmy.ml 1 points 1 day ago

I understand and concede your points.

There is a But. But there is no remedy or action to be taken for misadventures on that platform, however important they may be.

I feel it’s like watching a car accident, nothing can be done.

[-] plastic@lemmygrad.ml 8 points 1 day ago

Aren't we supposed to reach the people where they're at?

Idk man that's antiemetic

[-] tastemyglaive@lemmy.ml 19 points 1 day ago

Believable but also Oh God Not This Guy Again re: Shaun King what a fucking grifter

[-] geneva_convenience@lemmy.ml 8 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

What'd he do wrong (just some background, many people on Twitter are saying that Shaun's tweets got deleted.)

[-] Nakoichi@hexbear.net 7 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

Here's one example and not even the first time he did exactly this. The other times were mostly during the BLM protests. While I believe this is true just as Avatar does, Shaun is a well known grifter snake who's run multiple fundraiser scams. I haven't seen him mentioned in years I figured he just retreated from the public eye in shame but I guess he's still trying to pretend to be a legit activist.

Here's a more thorough list of his repeated pattern of scamming and profiting off of police killings of black people.

Short article below, but there are several long form video essays and podcasts about him if you want to know more.
