Fucking annoys me how libs in my gaming news podcast will just go KASHOGI KASOGI KASHOGI without every doing any of this over america and israel.

[-] Evilsandwichman@hexbear.net 39 points 2 weeks ago

I tried bringing exactly this up and got the whataboutism argument

I am acknowledging the murder of Khashoggi was a heinous crime, and I'm just asking they acknowledge Israel also committed this heinous crime (over two hundred times; in addition to also targeting the families of the reporters) and that the news should make just as much a fuss. The guy was arguing that I'm trying to whitewash the murder of Khashoggi; BRO, I AM SAYING THE MURDER OF KHASHOGGI WAS MONSTROUS, I AM AGREEING WITH YOU 110%! I AM JUST SAYING THAT IF THE NEWS IS BEING OBJECTIVE AND NOT BEHAVING AS A STATE MOUTHPIECE, THEY SHOULD ALSO TALK ABOUT ISRAEL'S SLAUGHTER OF REPORTERS AS WELL! HOW ARE WE ARGUING ABOUT THIS!

Whataboutism? What about deez nuts?

[-] Philosoraptor@hexbear.net 5 points 2 weeks ago

It's part of the same brainworm complex that makes them think being critical of the Democrats means you must support Republicans. They literally cannot conceive of politics outside the sports team style Red vs. Blue system--if I say "boo Red!" I must also mean "yay Blue!" and vice-versa. Similarly, there's a "good country" set and a "bad country" set. If we disagree about whether a country is good or bad, we must just be using opposite sets.

(especially white) americans have no right to speak on the crimes or misdeeds of any other country or culture.

[-] purpleworm@hexbear.net 4 points 2 weeks ago

I think it's fine if they recognize and prioritize acting on things that they can actually influence, like America's bankrolling of Israel's genocide. The issue here is that the very real and otherwise valid criticism is serving as a patina for national/racial/religious chauvinism.

[-] Le_Wokisme@hexbear.net 3 points 2 weeks ago

i view the genocide as an extension of amerikkka's evil but yeah sure, vassals are fair game; and cheeseburgers boycotting saudi arabia but not doing BDS are telling on themselves.

[-] purpleworm@hexbear.net 2 points 2 weeks ago

I completely agree about your view of Israel's actions, what I was failing to communicate is that, among things going on today, it's probably the most obvious and actionable example of a genocidal atrocity the US is responsible for, along with its treatment of immigrants. I was just saying that if someone is duly critical of their own nation and situations that are actionable by them, then their criticism of other country's actions can be evaluated on their own merits, or at least such an evaluation should be entered into the total consideration. I feel like it's unhelpful to say that such people who are duly critical, by virtue of being Americans, are disqualified from talking about -- to pick an arbitrary example -- the persecution of civilian groups in the Sudanese war, or even something less catastrophic but still clearly bad, like Japan's historical revisionism wrt its treatment of Korean and Chinese people. So long as these aren't being used as deflections or whatabouts from what America and its conspirators do, it's a good thing for people to be aware of, discuss, and advocate about.

[-] redchert@lemmygrad.ml 6 points 2 weeks ago

[-] surjomukhi@lemmygrad.ml 3 points 2 weeks ago

Because they don't care about it, they are just racists

[-] NuraShiny@hexbear.net 44 points 2 weeks ago

Wow, it will be even easier now for me to not buy any of their stuff!

[-] LaGG_3@hexbear.net 19 points 2 weeks ago

It's not like they haven't already fully digested all of the decent studios that they've consumed

[-] Keld@hexbear.net 16 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago)

What do they even make besides sports games and The Sims at this point?

[-] blobjim@hexbear.net 12 points 2 weeks ago

Battlefield. They also own Respawn Entertainment (Apex Legends, Star Wars Jedi Survivor, which they're probably working on a sequel to at the moment)

[-] invalidusernamelol@hexbear.net 5 points 2 weeks ago

If they make another Titanfall that'd be sick. I know they won't though

AND Jared Kushner? I don't get it; a country AND an individual are buying a multi-billion dollar company? That's so weird.

That's like reading 'China AND Macron's high school teacher are buying Blizzard'.

[-] AernaLingus@hexbear.net 29 points 2 weeks ago

Macron's high school teacher

I see what you did there

[-] invalidusernamelol@hexbear.net 7 points 2 weeks ago

She's maintained a close relationship with him from what I hear

[-] miz@hexbear.net 35 points 2 weeks ago

private equity buying EA

Thank god, just a few more years and EA will go under.

"Video freeze-gamer Electronic Arts"

Hope they replace microtransactions with ads for their super epic mega city that works part-time as a death by natural cause machine.

[-] Monk3brain3@hexbear.net 15 points 2 weeks ago

It shocks me that this company actually makes money. But I guess reskining every FIFA game for a new release does big on cost savings

[-] blobjim@hexbear.net 10 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago)

Seems like it could be beneficial. It will be interesting what a company as big as EA going private will mean for what types of games they make. Of course it could just mean layoffs and stripping out the copper wire. But Saudi Arabia is doing this kind of thing more for "soft power" than for pure economic benefit. So I could see them trying to improve EA's image by focusing on putting out good games rather than profit seeking via nickel-and-diming. But in all likelihood, nothing changes. I think it would definitely help Saudi Arabia's image if they "saved" Electronic Arts.

I am also in favor of all foreign buyouts of American companies because the US should own less stuff lol. It can also mean less of a hard-line propagandistic American perspective. Although I doubt it will really change anything in a company like EA.

If they

  • Put NCAA Football on PC

rant

spoilerFor God's sake EA I'm not buying a $300 console, $120 on controllers, $100 online pass, $80 game in order to have a NCAA football machine in my house. Christ get it together!

  • Fix Madden
  • Fix FIFA

I will give them critical support
