I've only ever seen this used on fish fingers sandwiches.

I've heard of "salad cream" only from all the Brit TV I watch. Your comment about fish sandwiches just clicked for me - is this what we would call "tartar sauce" across the pond?

[-] tiramichu@sh.itjust.works 16 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago)

No, we also have tartare sauce and this isn't it.

If you get fish and chips in a restaurant it will probably come with tartare sauce, but tartare sauce is something you likely don't have in the fridge at home 100% of the time as it is of limited utility in the number of dishes it can be used in, and the jar probably goes off before you had a chance to eat it all.

Salad Cream is basically mayonnaise but made acidic with vinegar. So it's a suitable stand-in for tartare as it has that little kick, and it can also be used in many of the places mayonnaise can, such as a sandwich condiment, or a side for chips (=fries) etc.

Salad cream kinda works as a poor mans tartare sauce - I had it on fish fingers in my youth. Like a cheap, vinegary mayo

[-] HumanPenguin@feddit.uk 3 points 1 month ago

Nope we have tartar sauce. Way nicer.

[-] zipzoopaboop@lemmynsfw.com 3 points 1 month ago

Fawlty towers specifically for me

[-] bandwidthcrisis@lemmy.world 6 points 1 month ago

Salad sandwiches is my main use for it, but I have put it on salads too.

[-] blimthepixie@lemmy.dbzer0.com 6 points 1 month ago

Yeah, it's much better than mayo!

It's fantastic with pork pies

Egg mayo? Use this instead

[-] BroBot9000@lemmy.world 6 points 1 month ago

Didn’t know the UK had their own version of Miracle Whip

[-] davepleasebehave@lemmy.world 7 points 1 month ago

I always wondered what miracle whip was.

[-] SaveTheTuaHawk@lemmy.ca 2 points 1 month ago

Petroleum by-product of gasoline refining.

[-] ClassIsOver@hexbear.net 4 points 1 month ago

My British room mate used to have it, and she'd put it in the pantry unrefrigerated. ...right next to the mayo with tin foil crimped over the top. She was a microbiology major, and they weren't experiments.

[-] LadyButterfly@reddthat.com 3 points 1 month ago

I've seen it on sandwiches with salad in them if that counts

[-] Djehngo@lemmy.world 3 points 1 month ago

I maintain that salad cream is almost the perfect condiment and can work as a substitute for either ketchup (due to it's acidity) or mayonnaise (due to everything else in it).

(Probably not a good idea to substitute either of them when used as ingredients though)

I think the name and the original intent was for it to work as a vinegarette equivalent since it is primarily oil and vinegar, and while it does certainly work there, I will pick vinegarette over sald cream if given the option. But for anything else where you would have ketchup or mayo salad cream wins.

[-] Flyberius@hexbear.net 3 points 1 month ago

My dad used to yeah. Lamb chop, boiled potatoes, lettuce and tomato. Salad cream everywhere

[-] BCsven@lemmy.ca 3 points 1 month ago

Yep it's the only salad dressing we had as kids. Even now most of my UK family only have this for salad, and the stores in their area only carry that, and not all the other types of salad dressing.

[-] GoldenFigApple@feddit.uk 3 points 1 month ago

Hate the stuff.

[-] zr0@lemmy.dbzer0.com 2 points 1 month ago

Do you like fish sticks?

[-] SaveTheTuaHawk@lemmy.ca 2 points 1 month ago

Excellent on corned eels or wadded beef.

[-] SoyViking@hexbear.net 2 points 1 month ago

What is this sorcery?

That’s all I’ve ever had it with. My mate likes it with tuna instead of mayo but it’s not for me.

[-] retrolasered@feddit.uk 1 points 1 month ago

Yes, only sometimes. Thats in my fridge purely for fish and chips and cheese sandwiches though

[-] yakko@feddit.uk 1 points 1 month ago

I am a great defender of British fare while my American people look at me funny - salad cream does not make the task easier.

So that’s why Tiktaalik went extinct! Dastardly Brits are at it again!

[-] Blackmist@feddit.uk 1 points 1 month ago

I put it in coleslaw to make it taste of something.

Mostly vinegar.

[-] blackn1ght@feddit.uk 1 points 1 month ago

Haven't had it since the 90's.

Never even heard of having it on fish finger butties! Surely that's tartar sauce territory?

[-] Alaskaball@hexbear.net 0 points 1 month ago

Knock-off mayonnaise because the British don't want to add another superior French word to their bland lexicon of a mockery of a language

[-] Flyberius@hexbear.net 9 points 1 month ago

It really does not taste like mayo. Yes, yes, I know, England bad.

[-] Alaskaball@hexbear.net -1 points 1 month ago

Ergo the knock-off part, wot

[-] Flyberius@hexbear.net 2 points 1 month ago

Try it, you might like it.

[-] Alaskaball@hexbear.net 1 points 1 month ago

I'd much rather eat a spoonful of miracle whip instead

[-] Flyberius@hexbear.net 4 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago)

How did you actually predict my next comment? Anyway, you can make salad cream yourself. It's basically mayonnaise with mustard in it and a tad more vinegar. If you like you can make it with a french accent seeing as you are so keen on them.

[-] BananaIsABerry@lemmy.zip 2 points 1 month ago

Same ingredients as most "salad" recipes, like egg, pasta, or potato salad. Mayo, mustard, and vinegar just taste great together.

[-] hotdogcharmer@lemmy.zip 2 points 1 month ago

Oh damn that actually sounds pretty good!

[-] Flyberius@hexbear.net 1 points 1 month ago

It's not terrible. Certainly not a mayo replacement. Just good on certain things

[-] Alaskaball@hexbear.net -1 points 1 month ago

Please spare me, I'll enjoy my delicious Delouis on my frites

[-] Flyberius@hexbear.net 2 points 1 month ago

It's salad cream, not chip cream, you knob

[-] Alaskaball@hexbear.net 1 points 1 month ago

It's bloody mayonnaise you plonk yer fries in you daft muppet

[-] Assian_Candor@hexbear.net 1 points 1 month ago

Comrades be nice 😤

[-] Corngood@lemmy.ml 1 points 1 month ago

Miracle whip is just the Kraft brand salad cream

[-] Alaskaball@hexbear.net 1 points 1 month ago

Still the ever so slightly superior Yankee product in terms of knock-off mayonnaise

[-] vext01@lemmy.sdf.org 3 points 1 month ago

We have mayo as well.

[-] HermitBee@feddit.uk 2 points 1 month ago

True, we never use the word mayonnaise, and mayonnaise is not vastly more popular than salad cream.

Oh wait.
