Image is of people passing through a road affected by landslides in Sri Lanka in the aftermath of the cyclone.

Over the last week, Sri Lanka has been hit by their worst national natural disaster since the 2004 Boxing Day Tsunami. Over 2 million people (about 10% of the population) were affected; the death toll is currently climbing past 600; nearly a hundred thousand homes have been damaged or destroyed, transport infrastructure is heavily damaged; industry has been damaged; and farmland has been flooded. The cost of damage so far looks to be about $7 billion, which is more than the combined budget spent on healthcare and education in Sri Lanka.

While there is plenty to say meteorologically about how this yet another concerning escalation as a result of climate change (Sri Lanka does experience cyclones, but they are usually significantly weaker than this), it's important to note that such disasters are, to at least a certain extent, able to warned about and their impacts somewhat mitigated. However, this requires both access to early detection and warning equipment, and an economy in which development is widespread - in this case, particularly in the construction of drainage systems and regulated construction, which has not generally occurred.

The IMF, on its 17th program with Sri Lanka, is doing its utmost to prevent such an economy from developing, as they instead promote reductions in public investment. On top of this, the rebuilding effort for Sri Lanka is already being planned and funded, and such donors include, of course, many Sri Lankan oligarchs, who will rebuild the damaged portions of the country yet further according to their visions, while sidelining the working class.

Perhaps neoliberalism's decay into its eventual death occurring concurrently into the gradual intensification of climate change and renewed wars signifies the rise of the era of disaster capitalism.

The Zionist Entity's Genocide of Palestine

If you have evidence of Zionist crimes and atrocities that you wish to preserve, there is a thread here in which to do so.

Russia-Ukraine Conflict

Examples of Ukrainian Nazis and fascists
Examples of racism/euro-centrism during the Russia-Ukraine conflict

Sources:

Defense Politics Asia's youtube channel and their map. Their youtube channel has substantially diminished in quality but the map is still useful.
Moon of Alabama, which tends to have interesting analysis. Avoid the comment section.
Understanding War and the Saker: reactionary sources that have occasional insights on the war.
Alexander Mercouris, who does daily videos on the conflict. While he is a reactionary and surrounds himself with likeminded people, his daily update videos are relatively brainworm-free and good if you don't want to follow Russian telegram channels to get news. He also co-hosts The Duran, which is more explicitly conservative, racist, sexist, transphobic, anti-communist, etc when guests are invited on, but is just about tolerable when it's just the two of them if you want a little more analysis.
Simplicius, who publishes on Substack. Like others, his political analysis should be soundly ignored, but his knowledge of weaponry and military strategy is generally quite good.
On the ground: Patrick Lancaster, an independent and very good journalist reporting in the warzone on the separatists' side.

Unedited videos of Russian/Ukrainian press conferences and speeches.

Hey buddy, I heard you like posts... DM me to feature effort posts and good threads in the newsmega/newscomm here (including your own posts). Some great discussion this week. I'm grateful to be part of this community.

Please review and provide feedback on revised comm policy and rules

@xiaohongshu@hexbear.net with a real banger on upward social mobility or lack thereof for China's Gen Z, the modern appeal of the Cultural Revolution, and CPC censorship Part 1 | Part 2. The subthread with @jack about modern youth Maoism is worthwhile as well.

@jack@hexbear.net on who owes the IMF money and the potential for China to upend the debt of the developing world. @xiaohongshu@hexbear.net has a good response here about the likelihood of China rugpulling the IMF/dollar denominated debt (xhs doubts it).

we've been having some discourse on Chinese foreign policy and the potential (or lack thereof) of Chinese military support for other countries in this thread (the subthread from @Boise_Idaho@hexbear.net's comment downwards)

not sure if that's an appropriate example, but we're just entering deep-nesting territory and I thought I'd draw attention to it. any other input or takes would be appreciated, I've perhaps gone too hard for the lack thereof side and I'm sleepi so I may have missed something

Gaza: A Night of Fire and Demolition

The last 12 hours saw relentless, varied aggression across the Gaza Strip, with the primary focus of the zionist entity’s fire centered on Khan Younis and heavy shelling battering Gaza City.

Khan Younis: Airstrikes and tank fire hammered the eastern areas and the Sheikh Nasser region, coupled with the demolition of residential blocks. Central Khan Younis City was also specifically targeted, with the Al-Agha residential building suffering repeated strikes. Even the coast was not safe; naval fire was reported off Al-Qarara Sea, compounding the pressure on the city.

Gaza City: Further north, Gaza City was also bombarded. Shujaiya neighborhood was hit repeatedly by heavy artillery and subsequent demolition in its eastern parts.

Rafah and Central Gaza: Rafah experienced both airstrikes and IOF shooting, with tank fire also detected in the Mawasi area.

[-] aanes_appreciator@hexbear.net 9 points 1 day ago

I hate to be doomer on this but Hamas is finished, right? There's no coming back once Israel gets you in the stranglehold of a "we can hit you but you cant hit us" so-called """ceasefire""".

They'll plink off your leaders, occupy your lands, and execute your children until there's nothing but despair. I genuinely think Hamas would have had a better chance at ending the genocide if they'd executed the prisoners, because only that might have triggered enough social upheaval in Israel to topple the regime. Instead, the Zionist liberals got to put their "bring them home!" placards and go back to brunch.

Of course this isn't a comment on the morality of executing prisoners, but it would have socially damaged the regime moreso than giving them up, imo.

Far-right dipshit, Jose Antonio Kast, has won the Chilean election over Jeannette Jara of the communist party.

Kast is staunchly pro-Pinochet, and his father was a Nazi lieutenant during WW2 who fled to Chile. He rejects climate change, same-sex marriage, and all exceptions to abortion. He also claims he wants to "defend Chile's European heritage against indigenous groups and multiculturalism".

Good luck, Chile!

Not surprised, just disappointed. Gonna blame it on Boric’s bullshit

[-] Redcuban1959@hexbear.net 16 points 1 day ago

Expect huge protests to break out in Chile soon. Congratulations to Boric for ruining everything. Not even Michelle Bachelet wanted to run in these elections, even though Lula and Petro asked her to because she was the left-wing/social democratic candidate with the best chance of winning.

JetBlue flight near Venezuela narrowly avoids ‘MIDAIR COLLISION’ with US Air Force tanker

PILOT: We just had traffic pass… within 5 MILES of us… refueler from US Air Force… they passed DIRECTLY in our flight path

PILOT: It’s OUTRAGEOUS… almost had a MIDAIR COLLISION

[-] Florn@hexbear.net 11 points 1 day ago

I guess 5 miles is pretty close at airplane speeds

At a cruising speed of about 600 mph, this is less than a 30 second miss.

Absolutely threading a needle, this could have lead to hundreds of deaths.

Joe Biden gave up everything for that Presidential Library. Joe Biden dropped out of the presidential race that he might have won for a 2nd term for that Presidential Library. Joe Biden sold his soul to the Delaware Credit Card Devil who has since made ‘Ol Joe live out this Job-like Faustian* journey through suffering and grief losing his wife, his favorite child so he could get that Presidential library. Joe Biden did genocide for that Presidential library. Joe Biden cannot enter Catholic heaven because of that Presidential library.

Now—now IRS filings show Biden has enough capital in his library foundation to build and open a mid-sized Dave & Buster’s franchise.

What else is there to say? Enjoy Hell, Joe Biden.

*Instead of Joe becoming youthful again he instead receives an endless amount of face lifts and tucks

[-] Lovely_sombrero@hexbear.net 35 points 1 day ago

Biden was always THE guy of the banks and the military industrial complex. And he didn't really get that rich from it, compared to many other politicians. He was just doing crimes for the love of the game, I guess.

The series Dark Matter was all right. The "physics" explanation for its premise was stupid (like if some dumbass business executive sat through a single physics lecture and thought they had gained a masterful understanding of how quantum mechanics works). It would've made more sense if they had just said "magic". But the plot and mechanics and exploration of realities were kinda cool. And holy shit the series is worth it for the last episode or two, which are fucking hilarious!

Obama-ism spoilersAnyway, at one point they go to a world that is supposed to be some kind of contemporary paradise run on empathy. I mean, there are trains, and people are eating yummy icecream, and apparently cold fusion had been invented, so nevermind that capitalism is still evident. And we learn that the best restaurant in Chicago in this world is...wait for it...at the top of the Obama Building!!!! (No, not that squat Star-Wars-Empire-like Obama Presidential Center thing, but a towering spire of a sleek skyscraper.).

Reminder that Chile's election is today. Communist Jeanette Jara is running against chud piece of shit Karst, who's just another Noboa/Milei type that's aping Trump and has US support. Jara came first in the last round, but only with a small margin. It's likely she will lose as conservative forces coalesce around Karst today.

Looks like the data centre grift is beginning to wobble.

Shares in data centre property group Fermi nearly halve after tenant pulls funding. Stock price of company co-founded by ex-US energy secretary Rick Perry fell as much as 46%. The plunge in Fermi’s share price left the stock down 70 per cent from its October post-listing high. Shares had surged 55 per cent on the company’s market debut.

The company has close ties with Donald Trump’s administration, as Perry, a Republican and former Texas governor, served as energy secretary during the president’s first term in office. Fermi had provisionally named its energy centre the President Donald J Trump Advanced Energy and Intelligence Campus. All nine Wall Street banks that cover the stock have assigned Fermi a “buy” rating. But investors have been upping their bets against the company ever since it went public. Roughly 38 per cent of Fermi’s publicly available shares are currently on loan to short sellers, according to Bloomberg data.

What? Not the genius Rick Perry!

Anyway, the big names to watch here are Oracle and CoreWeave. They are at the forefront of building actual infrastructure mainly for AI. People who hold Oracle debt that was issued just a few months ago are already ~10% underwater. Oh the joy!

[-] thethirdgracchi@hexbear.net 16 points 1 day ago

When CoreWeave implodes it's going to be insane. Their financials are so precarious and built on all these bizarre instruments with assumptions of infinite AI growth. No idea when it's going to happen, but I'm confident it will and it'll be spectacular.

EDIT: Seems like this has already been reported here.

There has been a shooting in Bondi in Sydney. Seems to be a Muslim perpetrator, the media is immediately calling this "anti-semitism" but I haven't been able to find a single news article that is actually giving information, it's all just people reacting to news of the event none of them have actually seen fit to publish. I'll edit this with an actual news link as soon as I find any actual news and not just gossip and fearmongering.

Literally every article I can find is formatted exactly like this, even using the same wording like "What we know so far." I fucking hate western journalists. It's all AI bullshit and truly atrocious reporting.

https://www.abc.net.au/news/2025-12-14/bondi-beach-shooting-terrorist-attack-12-dead/106141580

Also the government is already talking about "eradicating" the threat of anti-semitism, this is going to be used to crack down on pro-Palestine protests hard, and hard on the Muslim community in this country as well. I don't want to speculate, but the extremely canned reporting on this with no substance but a lot of fearmongering is triggering the paranoia part of my brain.

[-] SexUnderSocialism@hexbear.net 25 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

All of the usual Westoid suspects are already condemning the attack and suddenly voicing their opinions, like fucking King Charles, when they couldn't give the same shit about an active genocide. Fuck off.

[-] Salah@hexbear.net 16 points 1 day ago

Apparently it was a Chabad event? If so, not known for being a Zionist organization at all

[-] SteamedHamberder@hexbear.net 22 points 1 day ago

News from jta is that the shooting was at a public Hanukkah celebration organized by Chabad. A bystander who disarmed the shooter was also identified as Ahmed el Ahmed, a local vendor.

He was incredibly brave, bare armed tackled a guy armed with a shotgun or long rifle and got shot in the process.

At least 10 people killed in a shooting at Sydney's popular Bondi beach, one shooter killed another apprehended in a critical condition

https://www.abc.net.au/news/2025-12-14/active-shooter-bondi-beach-sydney-nsw/106141580

URL says active shooter but reports say threat is no longer active

[-] Leegh@hexbear.net 26 points 2 days ago

We don't even have any motive yet and Australia's media, intelligence agency, and politicians are already calling it a terrorist attack out of the gate. Solely because an Arab-looking guy was involved.

And because there just happened to be a Jewish event nearby (and it's the first day of Hannukah), the mass shooting is already being used by the aforementioned groups to paint it as an attack on Jewish-Australians, and how we need to reconsider our (already overwhelming) support for the Zionist entity and Palestinian statehood. Fucking dumb country.

[-] Damarcusart@hexbear.net 26 points 2 days ago

Active shooting and all the MPs can talk about is how this has happened because of all the pro-Palestine protests and how they need to crack down on them. Ghouls.
