The other day a friend and I got ambushed and killed by some dudes, we were just fucking around so i didn't have anything to lose anyway. On the way into the building I noticed there was a bastion outside so when they shot me down first so while they were fighting it out with him got on proximity chat and was like "okay well I'm gonna crawl out to this bastion out here then, so jave fun with that". One of them switched to taking potshots at me to try and finish me off so I just kept roasting him about how he couldn't shoot for shit and how I was suffering and he wouldn't even put me out of my misery as I got further and further away. It was very funny. He finally managed it but I was real close to that thing by then so i don't think they'd have been able to get my stuff without dealing with it (not that i really had anything).
I'm generally a passive and even friendly player and I've experienced nothing but since I started yesterday. I've done maybe 30 rounds and neither of my two deaths have been from players. I don't recall anyone even shooting in my general direction. I'm enjoying it a lot more than I thought I would. Just my 2c.
Just remember, it’s not your loot, just your turn to hold it
I'm a little surprised you don't curse in klingon. Seems like a great language for it no?
Im just learning it, other than "petaQ" I dont know many ways to curse someone yet heh
I know the term rat from mobas, which has completely different conotations.
This guy is less likely to rage out on someone IRL, and they know it.
There are only two things I have really seen people talking about with this game:
-
That it is good.
-
Complaining about encountering PvP at the most common points of contact, such as an exfil point.
Why in the hell are so many non-PvP players even playing a PvP game?
You can chose to be friendly if you want. I personally don't fuck with people unless they shoot me first (except one time where we knew a guy had a part we needed so we hunted him down). It does add a extra tension to the game and makes the parts where you get people to cooperate or take someone out that tried you more enjoyable. I think it would be pretty boring without it
I like encountering other players and helping them more than I do shooting them in the back while theyre looting
PVP is fine. Ratting is scummy.
It is kinda why I don't do extraction shooters myself. Nobody around where a gunfight would be fun as hell; no. They're waiting at the exit point when you're full of loot.
At least 90% of players who try to gain loot that way do so because they absolutely fucking suck at the game so if you're decent, you'll easily wreck them.
Yeah, the issue with extraction rats is they'll just load the place up with mines. And generally, the TTK is so fast there's not much counter-play available.
People say ratting is scummy yet some of the most popular EFT content creators are rats.
Face it, you're playing an extraction shooter — the extract campers won't go away.
A) "content creators" are not a barometer for the community by a long shot
B) I wasnt at extract
C) theres at least a "soft" aggression-based MM. Im in the friendly queue. Sure that doesn't guarantee safety but it's still shitty.
Why do we care what some streamers are doing for content? Why does that change the value judgement that rats are shitty people doing shitty behavior?
We can say they suck AND that they're not going away. Those are two separate thoughts.
It looks like a very interresting game with (as someone who hasn't played it) a great deal of pve. It's going to attract a lot of people who desperately hope and expect people to play for the pve.
I decided not to buy it because I've tried the genre before, and although I find it very interresting, the pvp is a big turnoff for me. I'd much rather have a completely pve, but still punishing when you fuck up, extraction shooter, kinda like the solo Tarkov mod, and the marketing makes the game look exactly like that.
I was interest precisely until I learned it had pvp. Instantly lost interest. I don't know the last time I had fun playing against other human beings.
Pvp was fine back in the day when it was with neighborhood friends down the street. Now youre playing a kid with 4000 hours in the game that does NOTHING ELSE but play, obviously they are going to destroy you (but their lives are probably pretty sad irl)
"but their lives are probably pretty sad irl"
We can only hope. Damn kids. Being better at games than me.
Seriously though, that's a lot of it but most of the "game mechanics" involved in pvp is just "redo the last 3 hrs of your time for no reason other than the whims of whoever is nearby."
Which is bad gameplay.
I like pvp when it doesn't mean potentially losing hours of progress. Humans are just too unpredictable. For some people, that's the biggest appeal, but to me, with a full time job and other shit to do, losing a whole night's progress because some asshat lied about being friendly, or just straight up cheating is completely breaking my fun.
Well an arcs match lasts max 30 mins, usually 15,so a betrayal is easily recovered
It's my understanding you also lose the potentially pretty valuable gear you bring?
Yep, that hurts. But otoh gear does degrade over time, so it does require resources to maintain. I'm not that deep into it myself but I've been doing missions using mostly starter gear which OS definitely doable.
Ratty pvp in solos the first week or two of the game didnt happen often. People not used to extraction shooters jumped on after watching whole lobbies being friendly, and now everyone is experiencing what the game is supposed to be.
Maybe try Minecraft.
Also comes with less AI slop. 🫠
TL;DR: This application of AI is arguably novel and ethical, and reactionary takes dunking on some of the only ethical usage in the AI world hurt our cause in the long run.
Correct me if I'm wrong, the game only uses TTS trained on the voice actors for the characters, who gave their consent and were paid for their labor, right? I feel like of all the applications of generative AI, that is not really the hill I want to die on. The game certainly is not unartistic, and this is one of the few cases where AI was used in a novel way where the voice actors are still paid and credited, and now the characters can respond to things in world far more dynamically. Otherwise callouts would have to be pretty generic, as there are just too many locations and combinations of phrases to record.
I feel like we, as those members of the public that oppose generative AI's wasteful use of power and water and the general watering down of human creativity, get really caught up over the use of "AI" in a very reactionary sense. We've used TTS, and TTS in games for decades. This is just the newest form of that, and done far more ethically than I suspect a larger studio might have. The voice actors gave them tons of lines and locations, and the TTS mashes those lines together to create very specific callouts. They were paid, and consented. AI is not inherently evil, it's a technology, and it's how we use those technologies that determines the ethics of the situation. Using the voices of paid voice actors that consented to that specific use is ethical in my opinion.
I'm very much opposed to the AI bubble and the invasion of AI into my life in so many ways that are unhelpful and dystopian, but it really bothers me to see reactionary behavior from other members of the anti-AI community. We should be opposed to AI wasting power and water and being used to dilute art and media, or deceive us. This just isn't that. There is an argument to be made that this is a slippery slope towards less ethical applications, but the slippery slope is a well known fallacy for a reason. AI, just like the internet after the .com bubble, will find legitimate and useful applications. We're in a very speculative phase of way too many (very invasive) applications of AI being shoved down our throats, and I totally understand resentment, but keep it rational. We shouldn't be dunking on one of the few applications in the space that is choosing a novel and ethical route. It's overall just going to hurt us in the long run.
All this machinery, making modern {games} can still be open hearted, not so fully charted its really just a question of your honesty.
Same as it ever was. I worry many of those using any kind of ai are NOT honest.
The studio was very upfront and honest with their usage, and never tried to pass it off as anything else. We shouldn't let reactionarism overtake logic. Ethical applications of AI should be our friends, because when they succeed, it shows all the bad actors that their way isn't going to win. Lashing out at anything "AI" just for existing helps no one.
That's fair. I didn't realize it used gen AI till after I bought it and couldn't refund, entirely my bad. Im very opposed to it.
And in my defense, solo queue is generally pretty friendly throughout the week.
Same. I tried to refund it but couldn't… thinking about having it deleted from my library anyway. I don't want sloppy unartistic garbage in there.
Do what you feel is best, friend.
They already got my money so fuck it, I may as well play.
