I consider profile pictures as a way to be more visually appealing, and a way to be recognizable more easily.

Why don't you have a profile picture?

I'm thirty to forty years old, I don't need this shit.

We did just fine in IRC with no accounts just handles. Recognize me or don't!

[-] aaaa@piefed.world 80 points 1 week ago

This is a place to be part of a crowd, not really about being recognized. I'm not here to make personal friends, nor a following.

I'm here for news and discussion. This doesn't really require recognizability between threads

[-] PonyOfWar@pawb.social 72 points 1 week ago

Voyager doesn't even show them

[-] Multiplexer@discuss.tchncs.de 17 points 1 week ago

And in Jerboa they are almost as tiny as optical wavelength physics permits.

Didn't even realize they exist until I took a very thorough look because of this post...

[-] Tenderizer78@lemmy.ml 48 points 1 week ago

There are profile pictures?

No, I don't.

Because they are pointless and shouldn't exist.

I don't want random pictures being loaded when I just want to read articles, posts, and comments. This isn't Facebook or Myspace. I'm not building a profile for people to look at. I'm reading and commenting.

They put extra burden on servers, apps, and mods. Someone has to be able to remove them if someone starts setting offensive pics like porn.

[-] Ephera@lemmy.ml 42 points 1 week ago

I like not being particularly recognizable. Treat me like everyone else that you don't know.

[-] eneff@discuss.tchncs.de 37 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

Why would I?

Why would I want to be recognizable?

I use link/content aggregators as my social media of choice, because I am interested in content and communities.

I don't care about curating some kind of online persona or interacting with any. This isn't Instagram.

I'm not here to curate an online persona.

[-] can@sh.itjust.works 29 points 1 week ago

and a way to be recognizable more easily.

I do not desire that.

[-] imsufferableninja@sh.itjust.works 29 points 1 week ago

Can't be arsed

[-] Vanth@reddthat.com 29 points 1 week ago

I use an app that doesn't show profile pictures by default.

I apply a user tag to anyone I want to recognize.

[-] TheLeadenSea@sh.itjust.works 28 points 1 week ago

Voyager doesn't show them, and I don't really use the web version at all.

The app I'm on doesn't show them and I don't care one way or another. And you will recognise me by my posts!

[-] Deme@sopuli.xyz 6 points 1 week ago

I checked your posts and, well, the comments sure are as entertaining as your username is descriptive.

I never look at anyone else's profile/picture. They aren't shown anywhere obvious in Voyager app.

[-] GrantUsEyes@lemmy.zip 23 points 1 week ago

My app doesn't show them... I'm just glad I can avoid the visual clutter.

[-] captainlezbian@lemmy.world 22 points 1 week ago

Because I'm not interested in having a profile picture and idk even what it would be

[-] lucg@lemmy.world 22 points 1 week ago

Wait there's profile pictures? I just see usernames in the comment threads in Lemmy and that seems fine to me

Why bother. I'm here to lurk, post an occasional comment, and enjoy. Not to make a reputation or become visible.

Haven't even looked into how. I think Lemmy is federated with some other types of fediverse styles, too? The interface I'm on doesn't emphasise individual user pfps. I can see pfps but they're tiny circles on my phone that I only notice if they're pointed out.

[-] JSens1998@lemmy.ml 18 points 1 week ago

Wait, you guys are setting profile pics?

I simply don't care enough.

[-] gray@lemmy.ml 18 points 1 week ago

I never click on anyone's profile, so I didn't think it mattered

A what now?
I'm just here to read memes and rant about crap no one else cares about. I can't be arsed to dig into all the random profile crap the developers poured hours of blood, sweat and tears implementing.

[-] HobbitFoot@thelemmy.club 16 points 1 week ago

I don't care enough to have one.

[-] booty@hexbear.net 14 points 1 week ago

Many people don't want to be recognizable.

[-] Korhaka@sopuli.xyz 14 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

Why bother? Wtf would I even use?

[-] TheHotze@lemmy.world 13 points 1 week ago

You can have a profile picture?!?

[-] luluberlue@lemmy.blahaj.zone 13 points 1 week ago

Because, I consider profile pictures to be a way to be more visually appaling, and a way to be recognizable more easily (thing that I do not want).

Why do you have a profile picture?

[-] monovergent@lemmy.ml 10 points 1 week ago

One less possible data point for tracking

Also not invested enough in my profile to bother

[-] Saapas@piefed.zip 10 points 1 week ago

I don't care enough to set one

[-] atropa@piefed.social 9 points 1 week ago

Why doย  YOU need a profile picture

[-] BarneyPiccolo@lemmy.today 9 points 1 week ago

My disinterest in pleasing my fellow Internetians, intersects with my not caring enough to figure out how, or bother to follow through.

Bottom line: Why should I? What's in it for me?

You can set profile pictures on Lemmy?

I speak with my words. Sometimes my actions. Pics also carry a shit ton of information I don't want them to.

[-] Soulphite@reddthat.com 7 points 1 week ago

A default letter does just fine, thank you. It's clean, concise and to the point. Less is more.

Because it's about the discussion and exchange of information & ideas, not about individuals.

[-] RebekahWSD@lemmy.world 6 points 1 week ago

I have one only because it's the one I use everywhere.

I don't see anyone else's though, the app I use doesn't show them mostly.

I do have a profile picture, but I don't think it's crucial. Other link aggregators often don't have profile pictures so if you're used to those, you may not think to set one. In any case I've never thought anyone's profile picture on here was particularly consequential to me.
