Friendly reminder: when commenting about a news event, especially something that just happened, please provide a source of some kind. While ideally this would be on nitter or archived, any source is preferable to none at all given.

If you have evidence of Israeli crimes and atrocities that you wish to preserve, there is a thread here in which to do so.

Sources on the fighting in Palestine against Israel. In general, CW for footage of battles, explosions, dead people, and so on:

UNRWA daily-ish reports on Israel's destruction and siege of Gaza and the West Bank.

English-language Palestinian Marxist-Leninist twitter account. Alt here.
English-language twitter account that collates news (and has automated posting when the person running it goes to sleep).
Arab-language twitter account with videos and images of fighting.
English-language (with some Arab retweets) Twitter account based in Lebanon.
English-language Palestinian Twitter account which reports on news from the Resistance Axis.

English-language PalestineResist telegram channel.
More telegram channels here for those interested.

Various sources that are covering the Ukraine conflict are also covering the one in Palestine, like Rybar.

The Country of the Week is still Palestine, though we will switch next week to a new country.

Here is the map of the Ukraine conflict, courtesy of Wikipedia.

The weekly (biweekly?) update is here.

Links and Stuff

The bulletins site is down.

Examples of Ukrainian Nazis and fascists

Examples of racism/euro-centrism during the Russia-Ukraine conflict

Add to the above list if you can.

Resources For Understanding The War

Defense Politics Asia's youtube channel and their map. Their youtube channel has substantially diminished in quality but the map is still useful.

Moon of Alabama, which tends to have interesting analysis. Avoid the comment section.

Understanding War and the Saker: reactionary sources that have occasional insights on the war.

Alexander Mercouris, who does daily videos on the conflict. While he is a reactionary and surrounds himself with likeminded people, his daily update videos are relatively brainworm-free and good if you don't want to follow Russian telegram channels to get news. He also co-hosts The Duran, which is more explicitly conservative, racist, sexist, transphobic, anti-communist, etc when guests are invited on, but is just about tolerable when it's just the two of them if you want a little more analysis.

On the ground: Patrick Lancaster, an independent and very good journalist reporting in the warzone on the separatists' side.

Unedited videos of Russian/Ukrainian press conferences and speeches.

Telegram Channels

Again, CW for anti-LGBT and racist, sexist, etc speech, as well as combat footage.

Pro-Russian

https://t.me/aleksandr_skif ~ DPR's former Defense Minister and Colonel in the DPR's forces. Russian language.

https://t.me/Slavyangrad ~ A few different pro-Russian people gather frequent content for this channel (~100 posts per day), some socialist, but all socially reactionary. If you can only tolerate using one Russian telegram channel, I would recommend this one.

https://t.me/s/levigodman ~ Does daily update posts.

https://t.me/patricklancasternewstoday ~ Patrick Lancaster's telegram channel.

https://t.me/gonzowarr ~ A big Russian commentator.

https://t.me/rybar ~ One of, if not the, biggest Russian telegram channels focussing on the war out there. Actually quite balanced, maybe even pessimistic about Russia. Produces interesting and useful maps.

https://t.me/epoddubny ~ Russian language.

https://t.me/boris_rozhin ~ Russian language.

https://t.me/mod_russia_en ~ Russian Ministry of Defense. Does daily, if rather bland updates on the number of Ukrainians killed, etc. The figures appear to be approximately accurate; if you want, reduce all numbers by 25% as a 'propaganda tax', if you don't believe them. Does not cover everything, for obvious reasons, and virtually never details Russian losses.

https://t.me/UkraineHumanRightsAbuses ~ Pro-Russian, documents abuses that Ukraine commits.

Pro-Ukraine

Almost every Western media outlet.

https://discord.gg/projectowl ~ Pro-Ukrainian OSINT Discord.

https://t.me/ice_inii ~ Alleged Ukrainian account with a rather cynical take on the entire thing.

Last week's discussion post.

Looks like I'm going to cover the SiFive/RISC-V drama. RISC-V is an instruction set architecture (like ARMv8 or x86) that's unique because it's an open standard. Unlike ARM or x86, you don't need a license to develop a core that implements the RISC-V ISA. SiFive is one of the pioneers of RISC-V and was founded by, well, the creators of the RISC-V ISA. They develop cores that implement the RISC-V ISA, which you can then license and integrate into your chips.

Amid intensifying tech war, 1 US chip design firm sees opportunity in China

It's not exactly a secret that RISC-V has gained significant traction in China and that SiFive has been trying to court Chinese customers.

RISC-V technology emerges as battleground in US-China tech war

Representative Mike Gallagher, chairman of the House select committee on China, said in a statement to Reuters that the Commerce Department needs to "require any American person or company to receive an export license prior to engaging with PRC (People's Republic of China) entities on RISC-V technology."

Jack Kang, vice president of business development at SiFive, a Santa Clara, California-based startup using RISC-V, said potential U.S. government restrictions on American companies regarding RISC-V would be a "tremendous tragedy." "It would be like banning us from working on the internet," Kang said. "It would be a huge mistake in terms of technology, leadership, innovation and companies and jobs that are being created."

However, recent US political decisions are screwing over SiFive's expansion plans... And, judging by the comments made by Congress, nobody knows what they're talking about.

The Risk of RISC-V: What’s Going on at SiFive?

Through multiple sources, SiFive has instigated a large number of layoffs. Numbers vary, from 100 to 300+, but multiple sources confirm that most of the engineering team, especially the physical design engineers, sales, and product team. The management team have also been fired from what I’ve been told, leaving the founders and CEO Patrick Little at the helm.

It's been reported that SiFive will no longer be providing predesigned cores (think like ARM's X1, A55, A76, etc.) and will be shifting their business model entirely to custom cores. In general, custom = less money because of poor scalability.

I don't think this is a coincidence. The loss of the Chinese market is a massive reduction in serviceable addressable market, which VCs pay a lot of attention to. I think this is a sign that VCs are derisking from their SiFive investment and forcing SiFive to adopt a leaner business model. I think this is also an indication that lobbyists from ARM, AMD, and Intel are working hard behind the scenes to spread FUD among Congress.

alj english was just re-airing an interview with julius maada bio, the president of sierra leone. the most interesting moment for me was the interviewer grilling him about whether he was really "on the democratic team" (i.e. deserving of western debt relief) given that china has investments in sierra leone. his response:

British guy: Yes, but you have big investments with China. Don't you?

Maada: Yes! But, investments- - - one thing that we have not suffered from: China intervening in our democratic process. We need help from everybody, we need support - technical support - we need friendship, we need great partners, and we need partners that we- that respect us too

it's worth noting I guess that maada is a bourgeois developmentalist so that "democratic process" is really underpinned by police terror. but maybe it's telling that even in the middle of calling for debt relief the president of one of the poorest countries in the world can't help but scowl at the interviewer's RP english and take shots at the unsc

Chinese fighter jet got within 10 feet of US bomber over South China Sea, US military says

The Chinese pilot “flew in an unsafe and unprofessional manner, demonstrated poor airmanship by closing with uncontrolled excessive speed, flying below, in front of, and within 10 feet of the B-52, putting both aircraft in danger of collision,” US Indo-Pacific Command said in a Thursday statement. “We are concerned this pilot was unaware of how close he came to causing a collision.”

"We are concerned this pilot was unaware of how hard he was dunking on us, and hope he finds this footage useful in bragging to his compatriots"

Iraq pressed to pursue attackers of US forcesThe top US diplomat has urged Iraq to pursue assailants hitting bases housing US forces after a spike in attacks.

Antony Blinken welcomed Prime Minister Mohamed Shia al-Sudani’s condemnation of the attacks on bases where American troops are stationed as part of an international coalition to fight ISIL (ISIS).

Blinken “urged the prime minister to pursue those behind the attacks and fulfill Iraq’s commitment to maintain the security at these installations”.

I just remembered something on an old Dan Carlin podcast he said. It was the episode about nuclear war. His point (and one I agree with) was that the firebombing of Tokyo, Hamburg, etc wasn’t really all that different from the nuclear bombs - that’s a condemnation of firebombing cities, not a defense of nuclear war. He relayed a story of a little Japanese girl who went into a shelter as some bombing started. The little girl told her dad “daddy are we dead yet?” Dan’s response was, as a father, he would almost rather go in quick nuclear blast than have to hear his daughter say that.

I’ve spent a lot of hours listening to him. When I saw those horrible tweets, I was angry. But I was also kinda sad. I know this is someone who is capable of empathy. He has said he got into politics in the 80s because he hated Reagan’s interventionist policies in Latin America. How he can just disregard the Palestinian struggle… I really don’t know.

Americans are expected to believe that Israel's siege on Gaza is a war of Democracy vs Autocracy where the "vibrant democracy" in Israel can shut off water, food, and electricity at a whim to the "authoritarian regime" in Gaza which mostly consists of women and children non-combatants.

At this point is it too optimistic say that left liberalism is no longer tenable? I really can't fathom a world in which well-groomed influencers try to sell the US's next imperial venture as progressive like they did with ukraine. Liberalism is becoming an overtly right wing project.

Jesus Christ, every day I take like ten minutes and go to /r/worldnews to see what they're up to, and I've honestly never seen this level of pure, unmitigated bloodlust on Reddit. This is post-9/11 levels of just the most unhinged islamophobic blood thirst that I've ever seen.

These motherfuckers are mainlining IDF propaganda 24/7, and even the most tepid, timid pushback is downvoted to oblivion and gets dozens of answers that read like absolute fucking demons demanding nothing but the complete annihilation of Gaza. I saw comments implying that all Palestinians support Hamas and are therefore fair game in war, and these comments have thousands of upvotes.

I don't know why I still bother. That site achieves the unthinkable: it is way fucking worse than Twitter.

Desperately trying to convince liberals that the only moral and practical options for opposing Hamas is to either directly by force stopping the ethnic cleansing of Palestine, or by creating and funding a 100% morally correct and non-antisemitic militia, giving them superior arms and materiel, and then supporting them in a campaign of military violence in freeing Palestine from ethnic cleansing, therefore depriving Hamas of legitimacy and role as primary armed resistance to Israel.

And of the two the former is obviously the more practical.

The liberals are doing it AGAIN and it’s making me furious! People all over Twitter who have been like relatively good about Palestine are suddenly handwringing about “River to the sea,” “There is only one solution! Intifada, revolution,” and “Honor our martyrs,” claiming that these are all basically calling for genocide of Israelis and glorifying Hamas. It’s just so transparently people wanting to support Israel so they can stop feeling bad about the ACTUAL REAL GENOCIDE Israel is doing RIGHT NOW to the Palestinians. Fuck all these people, I hope they all suffer and die so they can feel a tiny fraction of what the Palestinians have had to go through.

Continually my mind is drawn back to Red Sails’ essay on how Brainwashing isn’t real and people intentionally buy into propaganda to justify that which they already want to believe.

RSF says killing of Reuters journalist in Lebanon a targeted strike

Reporters Without Borders (RSF) says that the killing of Reuters visuals journalist Issam Abdallah in Lebanon on October 13 was the result of a targeted strike from the direction of the Israeli border.

“According to the ballistic analysis carried out by RSF, the shots came from the east of where the journalists were standing; from the direction of the Israeli border,” RSF said.

“Two strikes in the same place in such a short space of time (just over 30 seconds), from the same direction, clearly indicate precise targeting.”

Footage released online shows Abdallah and other colleagues were clearly marked as “Press” when they were fired upon.

This is just a half baked idea, not a fully formed thought… but I think their has to be a psychological connection between white Americans supporting Israel ethnic cleansing Palestinians and slaughtering brown “terrorists”, and their own feelings that in their suburban enclaves, that they are sitting on their own volcano. If you’re white and grew up in the suburbs, you probably have some idea of what I’m talking about. The notion that there are large masses of black folks in the inner city who are just waiting to do some mass invasion of the suburbs where the white folks are slaughtered. Even if they don’t have these explicit thoughts, it’s an anxiety deep in the id of so many white suburbanites. I feel like this support for Israel and lust for revenge comes from there. Also how they’re so easy to convince that “Hamas is pushing babies through Vitamix blenders” or whatever because they want to believe that only brown people are capable of that sort of thing.

There were virtually no major BLM protests in the wealthy, all-white suburbs. I’m convinced if there was, there would be multiple reports of white folks shooting protestors and the media kinda supporting it or at least both-sidesing it.

It’s so easy to support Palestine when it’s under attack by Israel. Everyone who today is shedding tears for Gaza was a couple weeks ago calling for blood going “Israel has a right to defend itself.” Well they got what they wanted, they should be celebrating. One would hope this would cause some self-reflection in westerners but we all know it won’t, in fact this is a situation that is desired in those same westerners. They are happy to support opponents of imperialism when those opponents are being killed off and displaced and on the run, but they can never support those opponents of imperialism when they are actually materially threatening imperialism.

oh for fucks sake, now the western MSM claims that they were wrong to blame Israel for the Hospital bombing:

The World Paid a Stiff Price for Bad Reporting on Gaza Hospital Explosion

Within minutes of the explosion at a hospital in Gaza, the court of public opinion had fully adopted the story that the tragedy was Israel's fault.

  • First of all, from hour zero the whole MSM (excluding UK Channel 4 and Al Jazeeera) scrambled together to find evidence against Israeli culpability and to blame Hamas, even though Occam's razor/Bayesian priors whatever makes Israel the most likely culprit, considering they've been bombing Gaza and they never stopped

  • The supposed refutation fell apart in days, but it was perceived to be obvious bullshit by people not biased towards the IOF. Hell, they even made a fake phone call with bad accents.

  • Now US intelligence claims it wasn't Israel, so it wasn't Israel. Yeah, the CIA is famously trustworthy.

  • "When Ukrainians misfire it's Russia's fault"

  • All this is secodary in some sense - Gaza's Health Ministry says at least 5,791 Palestinians have been killed by Israeli bombardments, including 2,360 children.

Large scale nationalization is happening all across Russia. Saw this on telegram and decided to look them up:

The court returned the Dalnegorsk GOK to the state, September 27, 2023

Dalnegorsky GOK is the only producer of boric acid in Russia. According to the authorities, the enterprise is one of the leading industrial enterprises in Primorye. In the first half of the year, more than 480,000 tons of ore were mined here, which is 36% more than in the same period in 2022.

The Prosecutor General's Office filed a lawsuit against the Fininvest company to declare the results of the privatization on August 2 illegal. On August 8, at the request of the prosecutor's office, 100% of the shares in the authorized capital of Dalnegorsky GOK LLC were seized as part of interim measures.

The main stake in Perm-based Metafrax Chemicals will be transferred to Russia, September 8, 2023

The Arbitration Court of the Perm Territory satisfied the demands of the Prosecutor General's Office to seize in favor of the state the main stake in the Perm enterprise Metafrax Chemicals, which was privatized in the 90s, producing methanol, said regional arbitration judge Tatyana Morozova.

The defendant pointed out the incomparability of the Soviet plant, the cost of which was estimated at 370 million rubles before the denomination, with the modern complex in Gubakha, its price is 116 billion rubles: “the objects are incommensurable in quality and cost terms.” The defendant drew attention to the statute of limitations: the prosecutor’s office had the opportunity to declare the illegality of “privatization” from 1994 to the 2000s. “The state has been saying for 30 years that everything is fine. Well, you can’t say after 30 years that the cow has fed up the bull,” the defender of the Metaholding company concluded his speech.

NOOO YOU CAN’T JUST SEIZE THE PLANT THAT I BOUGHT OFF CHEAP WHEN THE USSR FELL, YOU NEVER SAID IT WAS ILLEGAL BEFORE AND NOW THAT IT’S VALUED AT HUNDREDS OF BILLIONS OF RUBLES, YOU JUST CAME IN AND TOOK IT AWAY!!!

putin-wink

The Federal Property Management Agency became the owner of 100% of Volzhsky Orgsintez, September 21, 2023 (Volzhsky Orgsintez is one of the largest chemical factories in Europe)

Information about the new owner was entered on September 20. Previously, 100% of the shares of Volzhsky Orgsintez belonged to Alexander Sobolevsky.

In August, the Arbitration Court of the Volgograd Region satisfied the claim of the Prosecutor General's Office against Sobolevsky to claim 100% of the company's shares in favor of the state. In favor of the state, ordinary shares of the joint-stock company with a par value of 0.2 rubles each in the amount of 2,344,925 were to be credited.

The contract for the sale of the bankrupt Perm defense plant was terminated, August 22, 2023

The agreement was concluded on May 22, 2023, the transaction amount was 725 million rubles. The new owner of the defense enterprise announced plans to modernize the plant's production . The Ministry of Industry and Trade of the Russian Federation challenged the results of the auction by filing a corresponding application with the court as part of the bankruptcy case. The courts of first and appellate instances rejected the claims. As a result, the contract between the defense plant and the Moscow company was terminated pre-trial.

Concern "Pokrovsky" confiscated for corruption proceeds of its beneficiary, October 25, 2023

At the suit of Deputy Prosecutor General of the Russian Federation Igor Tkachev, the property of Andrei Korovayko, Arkady Chebanov, as well as related structures of the Pokrovsky concern, one of the large agro-industrial holdings in Russia, was confiscated. In total, 94 enterprises with a total value of 100 billion rubles were donated to the state. The case concerns shares and shares of JSC Concern Pokrovsky, agricultural firms Rus, Dolzhanskaya, Urozhaynaya, Rassvet, Mostovskaya, Rodina, the Kanevskoy meat and poultry plant, and the Pavlovsky meat processing plant. and "Tikhoretsky", Kanevsky, Timashevsky and Kurganinsky sugar factories, Albashsky, Stepnyansky and Staroshcherbinovsky elevators, as well as numerous trading and service companies.

——

At first I thought this smells like election season, but the weird part is that none of these moves were advertised loudly. Dozens of news like these are silently happening in the background.

Russia is such a weird country. It’s almost as if two separate factions are running the country.

You have on the one side the willingness to nationalize industries under state control, and on the other side you have the libs preparing for privatization of state assets to patch up the budget deficit.

You have a government that is willing to spend a huge amount of money to keep the economy going, and on the other side you have the Ministry of Finance and the Central Bank that doing everything they can to reverse all these efforts by raising interest rates at the snap of a finger.

It’s such a weird country I don’t even know what’s going on anymore.
