yep they got my number lol

[-] mickey@hexbear.net 27 points 1 month ago

It does! Also these companies put so much effort into understanding consumer psychology that hearing a developer explain how they mean to separate you from your money, it feels refreshing that I'm not being condescended to for once.

[-] AntiOutsideAktion@hexbear.net 56 points 1 month ago

Eight bucks is ten bucks, wtf are they smoking

[-] Volcatile@hexbear.net 29 points 1 month ago

counterpoint: $7.99 is five dollars

[-] GenderIsOpSec@hexbear.net 9 points 1 month ago

well it has 7 in there and thats only 2 more than 5... thinking-about-it

[-] LeninsBeard@hexbear.net 54 points 1 month ago

Broke: Stores setting prices to $X.99 to trick consumers into thinking things are a dollar cheaper

Woke: Whatever the fuck this is

[-] Le_Wokisme@hexbear.net 26 points 1 month ago

nah this is bespoke.

woke is including tax in the posted price

[-] WokePalpatine@hexbear.net 45 points 1 month ago

If you get as cheap as I am you feel the daggers of every dollar increase and this fuzzy math logic goes away.

[-] Nacarbac@hexbear.net 45 points 1 month ago

The price point knows where it is, because it knows where it isn't.

That makes complete sense. I usually make things up in the price of a pita shawarma, but it's the same concept. I think it falls under the broad category of "girl math"

edit: Broad category: girl math kelly

[-] Are_Euclidding_Me@hexbear.net 20 points 1 month ago

I think it falls under the broad category of "girl math"

Please explain to me how this isn't misogyny.

[-] RION@hexbear.net 40 points 1 month ago

Would u like that in a girl math proof or traditional

I love how you can see all the others fighting like hell not to laugh

[-] Are_Euclidding_Me@hexbear.net 6 points 1 month ago

I'll have to watch that vid later! Can't watch stuff at work!

[-] Le_Wokisme@hexbear.net 4 points 1 month ago

lol that guy's brother (youtube uploader not scott steiner) owns 20% of giantbomb

[-] HexReplyBot@hexbear.net 1 points 1 month ago

I found a YouTube link in your comment. Here are links to the same video on alternative frontends that protect your privacy:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Girl_math it's just a meme, and not even one of the problematic ones.

[-] woodenghost@hexbear.net 19 points 1 month ago

That article goes on to explain how it is misogyny right there.

[-] BanMeFromPosting@hexbear.net 3 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago)

Yeah, I just grabbed the first thing that explained the meme. Who would have figured wikipedia was saying silly things shrug-outta-hecks

[-] Are_Euclidding_Me@hexbear.net 19 points 1 month ago

I mean, alright, but it still seems like misogyny to me. Just like "girl dinner", except worse because of the pervasive (and extremely incorrect) stereotype that women are bad at math.

[-] BanMeFromPosting@hexbear.net 3 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago)

I get that. I used to feel like that about a bunch of stuff, now I try to tap out

[-] AF_R@hexbear.net 5 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago)

I insist you return and not only engage, but aggressively do so. Having a struggle session about girl math with literally other communists is a definite and real step towards solving the problems men and women face in a society which not only encourages, but rewards psychopathy, sociopathy, and antisocial behaviors at its very fundamental structure.

Now, have at me! Ravish me!

[-] LaughingLion@hexbear.net 10 points 1 month ago

It's actually misandrist because girl math is actual math. Originally it had to do with how a person earmarked money spent and not spending it and deciding to spend it on something else and considering that to cost zero. But that works out economically as that money was already spent and it is, in fact, how economists consider spending. So as it turns out, "girl math" is just conventional economics and "guy math" is wrong as guys are effectively emotionally "spending" the money twice.

Yeah, but I think I've got proof
7.95 = 5
7.99 = 7.95
8 =/= 10
8 =/= 5
8 =/= 7
However
n = n.99 - 1
Therefore
7.99 = 8
So
8 = 7.99 = 7.95 = 5

It only works for 7 and 8 because those are uncomfortable numbers that we want to be another number, but going from 8 to 10 is too big because we go from one digit to two.

edit: additionally if 6 was 8 it also wouldn't work, because 6 is a number that feels wrong to mess with. Hence why, when people ballpark amounts, they often guesstimate "about 6 or 7". This also leads on to reinforce the current gen alpha 67eeen mindworm

[-] Fossifoo@hexbear.net 4 points 1 month ago

I would guess this is because of subitizing. Around 7 is the maximum number for many people.

[-] christian@hexbear.net 4 points 1 month ago

Broad category: girl math

Girl math is the study of functors from the Broad category to the category of tits buildings.

[-] Carl@hexbear.net 32 points 1 month ago

The industry has spent millions on hiring psychologists to figure this shit out instead of making games more fun.

[-] HiImThomasPynchon@hexbear.net 29 points 1 month ago

Similarly, I bought a record recently for €30, and as long as I keep thinking of it as €, it's not real money.

[-] hypercubie4@lemmygrad.ml 14 points 1 month ago

all money isn’t real if you really think about it, I’d keep spending it!

[-] PurrLure@hexbear.net 22 points 1 month ago

This is how they start off gacha game addicts.

[-] Strayce@lemmy.sdf.org 22 points 1 month ago

I'm upset at how much sense this makes to me.

I'm afraid $7.50 is the most expensive 5 bucks in my book

[-] SorosFootSoldier@hexbear.net 15 points 1 month ago

Cheers I'll drink to that bro

proving that modulus is against human nature, retvrn

[-] christian@hexbear.net 14 points 1 month ago

How can eight-to-five possibly be the biggest differential when eight-to-four is $1 bigger and obviously just as valid given that $4 = $5?

[-] Florn@hexbear.net 24 points 1 month ago

It just means that $4 is the least optimal variant of $5, while $8 is the most optimal

[-] christian@hexbear.net 2 points 1 month ago

Oh biggest differential from $5, not biggest differential altogether.

[-] Florn@hexbear.net 2 points 1 month ago

Not exactly, what he's saying is that "a $5 DLC" is more of a vibe than a specific price point, and people mentally treat DLCs with both $4 and $8 price points as being "a $5 DLC". So there's no point in lowering the price to $4 because it won't increase sales and you may as well charge $8 because it's not until you get to $9 that people re-evaluate and decide it's a different vibe, "a $10 DLC", which feels like a bigger purchase.

[-] christian@hexbear.net 1 points 1 month ago

But there's just as little point in lowering an $8 dlc to $5 as to $4. There would be a point in raising a $4 to $8, and that's a larger differential than $5 to $8.

[-] tombruzzo@hexbear.net 11 points 1 month ago

This being about Peak totally makes sense. One of the best five bucks I've ever spent. Actually, it was ten bucks because I bought a copy for my girlfriend so we can play together.

To think you could spend twenty bucks to play a game with four friends for less than the price of a single AAA game is wild. And it still goes on sale too!

[-] huf@hexbear.net 10 points 1 month ago

this reminds me of my theory that people will unthinkingly spend money as long as the price is below a pack of cigarettes.

[-] DasRav@hexbear.net 7 points 1 month ago

So that's why those fuckers are so expensive these days!
