A reminder that as the US continues to threaten countries around the world, fedposting is to be very much avoided (even with qualifiers like "in Minecraft") and comments containing it will be removed.

Image is of a Quds Day march in Bandar Abbas, Iran.

It now seems likely that, very soon, the US and the Zionists will attempt to bomb Iran. Compared to the buildup to the Iraq War, the stated goals of such a move are being kept a little more generalized - some say the point is to overthrow the government for "humanitarian" purposes (others are more honest and want to partition Iran into a dozen powerless statelets). Some people instead say the point is to get rid of the ballistic missile program, which is synonymous with outright surrender, as no matter the deal, bombers would be en route within 10 minutes of the last batch being handed over.

Still others say that the goal is to destroy the Iranian nuclear program, which, as the thread title implies, is now in a bizarre propaganda superposition: it is apparently simultaneously true to the Trump administration that the US obliterated the nuclear facilities and set back Iran's nuclear program years, if not decades, but also that Iran is mere days away from finishing a nuke and a new round of bombing is urgently required. This obviously casts newfound doubts on how effective US weapons even are at penetrating Iran's underground facilities (though it doesn't necessarily mean they didn't breach them, as Iran was almost certainly moving nuclear material out of Fordow and other sites in the days before the Twelve Day War). The sheer quantity of US anti-air defense equipment they're shifting into position also casts doubts on whether Iran's air defense was mostly destroyed during that conflict, as those who assert that the Zionists had total air supremacy over Iran seem to be implying.

I'm not a military guy, and so I have no novel insights on how such a war is likely to go, nor do I feel confident predicting either side's victory. I'm looking at most of the same sources that you're all looking at. Some confidently boast of the total destruction of Iran's air defense within hours, allowing US planes to fly directly over Iranian cities and drop bombs en masse; others cast doubts on whether this will ever occur, and say that the US's limited supply of Tomahawk missiles is the only major firepower they will be able to safely unleash. Some say this war will last mere days before state collapse; others say months, maybe even years. I have no idea.

I do at least feel somewhat bolstered by the fact that Russia and China finally appear to be pouring in meaningful information and matériel to help Iran this time around, though of course, one can still debate whether it's enough. I feel like we are at the culmination of decades of war planning by both the US and Iran, and the result could have deep ramifications indeed.

Larry Johnson's analysis of the situation:

Trump and the neocons continue to believe that the support for the Islamic Republic is shallow and fragile. But judging from the reaction of the Iranians to the murder of the Ayatollah, I think Iran is now fully committed to a war of attrition. The advantages the US currently enjoys are likely to dissipate if this war continues for several weeks. The closure of the Strait of Hormuz to maritime traffic will inflict severe economic harm to the global economy if the IRGC is able to keep it closed.

The odds are high that the Iranian attacks on US military installations and Israel will escalate in coming days. The US airbase in Erbil is under attack; the CIA station in Dubai has been hit with a missile as well as a Kuwaiti air base that is hosting US aircraft. Let’s see what the next 24 hours brings.

IRGC: The US Navy aircraft carrier Abraham Lincoln was attacked with 4 cruise missiles

After the attack, this US ship fled from its mission location towards the southeast of the Indian Ocean ‌ The "THAAD" radar of the Zionist regime's missile defense network in "Al Ruwais, UAE" was completely destroyed by a precision missile strike from the Aerospace Force of the IRGC.

The fuel support ship of the US naval group, 700 kilometers off the coast of Chabahar, was hit by drone and missile systems, becoming non-operational and removed from the operational cycle.

Euronews - Spain government condemns US & Israeli strikes

“We reject the unilateral military action of the United States and Israel, which represents an escalation and contributes to a more uncertain and hostile international order,” Sánchez wrote on X.

Spain is boycotting Eurovision over Gaza. Maybe it’s time to start boycotting NATO.

Probably Sánchez loses the next election though. Spanish conservatives (who are ugly right wing) are most likely winning soon. And the leader of the right, Feijóo, is taking the same line as the spineless UK and Australians and supporting the perfidious actions of Israel and the USA.

Even more, we might see new actions from groups that have kept a lower profile like the PMU in Iraq and maybe those Assadist or anti Zionist groups that have been created in Syria.

This is now on the way to become that worst case scenario regional war that was discussed everywhere.

NASA says it needs to haul the Artemis II rocket back to the hangar for repairs

This is the SLS rocket, an unholy abomination of legacy space shuttle parts kerbal'd together and using the latest in 1970s rocketry technology. It was designed this way because the US senate, holder of NASA's pursestrings, specifically wrote it into law that NASA must build and fly this stupid thing so that the defence industry contractors who made the space shuttle could continue their grift without investing into new R&D.

This specific vehicle is intended to carry four astronauts on a looping orbit around the Moon as a dress rehearsal for the Artemis III mission intended to land astronauts on the Moon. Bringing it back to its hangar for repairs after several launch delays is yet another indication of what a grifting clusterfuck the entire Artemis program is. Cost estimates are officially USD $2.5 billion per launch just for the rocket, no payload, and unofficially-but-credibly-sourced as being about USD $4 billion per launch. The primary contractor is Boeing. They can build one roughly every 18 months. It costs about USD$26000 per kilogram to lift a payload to orbit even using the optimistic official-NASA numbers, but probably more like USD$40000 in reality. And it uses solid rocket side boosters of the exact same design that killed the Challenger crew. You can't turn solid rockets off in an emergency, they either burn themselves out, or explode.

(Insert standard "my respect for SpaceX accomplishments is strictly for the scientists and engineers and technicians and not the know-nothing shithead who owns the company" disclaimer here.) SpaceX's Falcon Heavy in comparison can lift about 70% of what SLS can do on a single launch (64 tonnes in expendable mode vs SLS' 95 tonnes). And it can do it for about USD$2350 per kilogram, less than 10% of SLS's per-kilogram cost. And it can launch every week. And it uses propulsion that's basically the safest you can get in rocketry: turn-off-able liquid engines running on kerosene and oxygen - the same as the renowned Soyuz itself.

Watching spaceflight R&D nowadays is basically full-time heartbreaking

A report on US ships and naval bases getting struck during the retaliatory strikes:

In this phase of the operation in the Indian Ocean, American vessel MSP, tasked with transporting ammunition for American ships, was struck by four drones while anchored at Jebel Ali port, according to a statement by the IRGC’s public relations department.

After sustaining heavy damage and successive explosions during the latest wave of the operation, the vessel has been completely put out of service, it added.

The American naval base in the Abdullah Mubarak area of Kuwait was also hit by four ballistic missiles and twelve drones. All main infrastructure was destroyed, and a large number of American forces were killed and wounded, the statement noted.

Additionally, an MST-class combat support ship, assigned as a fuel tanker supplying American vessels in the Indian Ocean region, was struck by Iranian Qadr-380 missiles.

U.S. Races to Accomplish Iran Mission Before Munitions Run Out

Trump says the Iran campaign might last a week or longer, but dwindling stockpiles could limit his options

more

When the U.S. military’s top general laid out the risks to President Trump of launching a major and extended attack on Iran, one of the issues he flagged was America’s stockpile of munitions. Now that is being put to the test, as the U.S. races to destroy Iran’s missile and drone force before it runs out of interceptors to fend off Tehran’s retaliation, current and former officials and analysts say. The precise size of the U.S. stock of air-defense interceptors—what the Pentagon calls magazine depth—is classified. But repeated conflicts with Iran and its proxies in the Middle East have been eating into the supply of air defenses in the region. Since Saturday morning Tehran time, the U.S. and its allies in the region have pounded an array of leadership and military targets in the country, including Iran’s missile launchers, drones and airfields. One reason the U.S. and Israel struck first, a senior official said Saturday, was to blunt Iran’s ability to retaliate with its missiles and drones. It isn’t yet clear how long the strikes will need to last. “The heavy and pinpoint bombing, however, will continue, uninterrupted throughout the week or, as long as necessary to achieve our objective of PEACE THROUGHOUT THE MIDDLE EAST AND, INDEED, THE WORLD!” Trump posted on social media on Saturday.

Iran’s retaliation on Saturday has been more ragged than in the 12-day war when it fired more than 500 missiles and many more attack drones. Israel’s announcement that Iran’s supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, was killed in an airstrike could also hasten an end to the conflict, though it is far from clear who might succeed him.

"more ragged" and yet they've hit way more targets, man it must be amazing to be a Western journalist, you can just say shit

Still, U.S. Central Command said Saturday that its force has already mounted a largely successful defense against hundreds of Iranian missile and drone attacks, though some have managed to hit their targets, especially in Arab Gulf states that are close to Iran. The conflict isn’t over, and there are still more U.S., Israeli and Iranian strikes to come.

"some"

“One of the challenges is you can deplete these really quickly,” said Kelly Grieco, a senior fellow at the Stimson Center think tank who used to teach at the Air Command and Staff College. “We’re using them faster than we can replace them.” The Thaad antimissile system was deployed to Israel in 2024, along with the U.S. Army troops to operate it, as the Biden administration sought to protect the country against Iran. A Thaad has also been deployed to Jordan, where many U.S. combat aircraft are now deployed. A major concern for the Pentagon is to maintain a sufficient stock of interceptors for the Thaad, which U.S. forces also operate in South Korea and Guam, to deter North Korea and China. The Pentagon is also racing to replenish stocks of Patriot and Standard Missile interceptors, which also take out aerial threats and are being used to defend against Iranian missiles and drones. Patriots take out lower-flying threats, while SM-3s can intercept ballistic missiles above the Earth’s atmosphere. Air-defense interceptors aren’t the only munitions that are in short supply. The U.S. is also expending sea-launched Tomahawk cruise missiles, widely known as TLAMs, and aircraft-launched weapons against Iranian targets. This comes on the heels of Operation Rough Rider, the U.S. campaign last year when the U.S. used long-range precision weapons against Yemen-based Houthi militants.

“The Trump administration has fired TLAMS at an extraordinary rate in operations around the globe, in the Middle East against Iran and the Houthis as well as in Nigeria on Christmas Day,” said Becca Wasser, a senior fellow at the Center for a New American Security. Those weapons are well-suited for striking infrastructure and would be in high demand in the early weeks of a potential conflict with China. “When we wargame, TLAMS are some of the first munitions to go within that first week of a U.S.-China conflict,” Wasser said. To compensate for the shortfall, she added, the Pentagon would need to double down on procurement and production. The continuing air campaign against Iran doesn’t appear to have featured U.S. long-range antiship missiles, which the U.S. would also need if there was a conflict with China.

One development that will ease the strain on the American supply of offensive munitions is the involvement of Israel’s military, which it said carried out the strikes against Iran’s military leadership. But Israel has concerns about its munitions supply as well. It is still low on Arrow 3 air-defense interceptors, another U.S. official says. Israel is also low on air-launched ballistic missiles, a weapon it used to take out Iranian missile launchers this summer and to attack Hamas leaders in Qatar last year, the official said. Jonathan Conricus, a former spokesman for the Israel Defense Forces who is a senior fellow at the Foundation for Defense of Democracies, said he was “underwhelmed so far by the amount of missiles that the Iranians have been able to fire.” “Eventually it boils down to numbers,” he added. “How many interceptors will we have versus how much launchers will they be able to field and fire.” The U.S. moved a large supply of missiles and interceptors to the regions, including from partners that have interceptors. If the war drags on and more interceptors are needed, the Pentagon would need to decide whether to access stockpiles in the Pacific, a U.S. official said.

  4. Link sources: All posts must include a link to their source. Screenshots are fine IF you include the link in the post body. If you are citing a Twitter post as news, please include the Xcancel.com (or another Nitter instance) or at least strip out identifier information from the twitter link. There is also a Firefox extension that can redirect Twitter links to a Nitter instance, such as Libredirect or archive them as you would any other reactionary source.

  5. Archive sites: We highly encourage use of non-paywalled archive sites (i.e. archive.is, web.archive.org, ghostarchive.org) so that links are widely accessible to the community and so that reactionary sources don’t derive data/ad revenue from Hexbear users. If you see a link without an archive link, please archive it yourself and add it to the thread, ask the OP to fix it, or report to mods. Including text of articles in threads is welcome.

  6. Low effort material: Avoid memes/jokes/shitposts in newscomm posts and top-level replies to the newsmega. This kind of content is OK in post replies and in newsmega sub-threads. We encourage the community to balance their contribution of low effort material with effort posts, links to real news/analysis, and meaningful engagement with material posted in the community.

  7. American politics: Discussion and effort posts on the (potential) material impacts of American electoral politics is welcome, but the never-ending circus of American Politics© Brought to You by Mountain Dew™ is not welcome. This refers to polling, pundit reactions, electoral horse races, rumors of who might run, etc.

  8. Electoralism: Please try to avoid struggle sessions about the value of voting/taking part in the electoral system in the West. c/electoralism is right over there.

  9. AI Slop: Don't post AI generated content. Posts about AI race/chip wars/data centers are fine.
